Future Direction in Hugh Jackman's career

If I can will it -- I would like Hugh Jackman to spend a good deal of the next phase of his career in historical films.

He has the personality & acting skills to depict stories of the past --

while movies like Les Miserables is fictional, it is based on life from that part of French history rich in events and cultural changes.

While fictional and only "inspired' by the story of PTBarnum, The Greatest Showman is really focused on the development of mass entertainment (aka showbiz) but unfortunately, what people remember from the movie most is the songlist.

More contemporary stories like depicted in Bad Education & The Front Runner are based in seemingly current times, so the illusion of history is not strong.

Let's hope Hugh Jackman is given more opportunities to interpret other facets of history in a historical film.


Crossing my fingers that the film project THE GOOD SPY lands squarely on his lap!

‘Star Wars’: New Movies From James Mangold, Dave Filoni in the Works
And Daisy Ridley will star in one from Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy.

Star Wars movies are back.

After several years of Star Wars focusing on TV shows and the movies being dormant, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy shook up fandom by revealing that three new movies were in the works.

James Mangold, Dave Filoni and Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy will direct three new Star Wars features, Kennedy announced at Star Wars Celebration, held in London. And with great fanfare, and to the utter delight of the rapt and screaming crowd in the ExCel convention centre, it was also revealed that Daisy Ridley was returning to the Star Wars universe and would star in the feature to be helmed by Obaid-Chinoy.


Kennedy said the company was working on expanding the mythological timeline created by George Lucas by pushing forward, backward and sideways. Mangold’s movie is to be set in the deep past while Obaid-Chinoy’s is set 15 years after the events of Rise of Skywalker, the last Star Wars movie.

Filoni’s feature is to be set in the so-called present, as it will act as a climactic event for the current Star Wars series The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett and the upcoming Ahsoka. Filoni is an executive producer and creative guide on these series.

No timeline on the release was given.

Mangold described his project as a “Biblical epic” that would look at the origins of the Force and be set 25,000 years before any of the timelines and stories told by the movies and shows so far.

“When I first started talking to Kathy about doing one of these pictures, what occurred to me was thinking about what kind of genre of movie within Star Wars I wanted to do,” he said. “And I thought about a Biblical epic, like a Ten Commandments, about the dawning of the Force. Where did the Force come from, when did we discover it, when did we learn how to use it?”

Obaid-Chinoy, meanwhile, said she is attracted to the idea of the hero’s journey and was keen on immersing herself in a focus on a Jedi academy and a Jedi master. “I have spent the better part of my life meeting real heroes who are overcoming oppressive regimes and battling impossible odds. And I think that is the heart of Star Wars,” she said.

Ridley, for her part, didn’t reveal too much, but did say she “was thrilled to be continuing this journey.” Her character, Rey, finished the 2019 movie by taking on the last name of Skywalker, a nod to carrying on the legacy of Luke and Leia Skywalker as she became a fully realized Jedi.

Star Wars movies have been conspicuously absent from the big screen since the end of 2019, when Disney and Lucasfilm released Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker. With fans unafraid to voice their less than enthusiastic reception for Rise of Skywalker and 2017’s Episode VIII – The Last Jedi, as well as the bombing of the 2018 stand-alone movie, Solo: A Star Wars Story, Lucasfilm froze its movie development, and its plans for yearly releasing them, in carbonite.

The feature projects it did try to launch, meanwhile, got stuck in the tractor beam of development hell and creative differences. Rogue Squadron from Patty Jenkins, movies from Rian Johnson, a trilogy from The Game of Thrones series creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, one from Taika Waititi, one from Kevin Feige, came and went or are on burners so far back they are in entirely different kitchens.

However, the company has never stopped developing projects; it just tried to do it under heavy secrecy. And with some of the Star Wars TV series not living up to the expectations set by the high bar of The Mandalorian, Lucasfilm and Disney made it a point to redouble its movie efforts. Sources even say the company was mandated to shift focus on diversifying its non-Star Wars slate — it recently did not move forward on a second season of fantasy Willow — and go back to the galaxy far far away.

Is Hugh staying as Wolverine beyond "Deadpool & Wolverine"?

Per a usually-informed source, he might be --




I think Hugh will decide if in his judgment he has already explored most, if not all, that he wants of the character.

It is not as if Hugh Jackman does not have other career options --

*He is versatile in most genres - action/drama/musicals/darkcomedy/biopics

His other new film projects show this versatility ( 3 Bags Full is Comedy w/ mystery...while Robin Hood is action and drama).

*He is equally at home on stage -- maybe more dramas( even classical plays like Shakespeeare) than musicals ( as he has said, it is getting more physically-dificult at his age now)

*Can he still do concerts?

*He can turn partly to writing - maybe even scripts for fiction or even documentaries of interest.



The issue of finding a replacement for him --

*Physically similar to Hugh or one who fits the comic book description? That is not an easy decision.

*Does the actor have the same strong acting skills?

*Does he have the charisma that Hugh Jackman has in spades, to keep a loyal following for decades?



Maybe up to Secret Wars?

Deadpool & Wolverine, the 34th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and first to be R-rated, not only brings Ryan Reynolds’ titular Merc with a Mouth into the Disney-owned MCU franchise but also features the return of the iconic Hugh Jackman as James “Logan” Howlett, aka the Wolverine, after a 7-year break. Jackman holds the longest career as a live-action Marvel character, having debuted as Wolverine 24 years ago in 2000’s X-Men. Under the now-defunct 20th Century Fox regime, Jackman appeared as the Marvel hero 9 times across the main X-Men franchise and his own spin-off trilogy. And that’s not including the numerous times he’s referenced in the previous two Deadpool movies through archival footage and fourth-wall-breaking jokes. In support of Deadpool & Wolverine, we sat down with Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige to get a better idea of just how much longer Hugh Jackman will be playing Wolverine.

As revealed in the film’s marketing, Hugh Jackman’s titular X-Man in Deadpool & Wolverine is not the same version of the character from director James Mangold’s Logan. Released in 2017, Logan brought Jackman’s story as Wolverine in Fox’s Marvel universe to a definitive end. That version of Logan made the ultimate sacrifice and gave his life fighting to protect his younger clone, Laura/X-23 (Dafne Keen). In Deadpool & Wolverine, audiences are introduced to a “variant” of Wolverine from another timeline — one with a more flawed history than the famed Logan from the previous Fox franchise. Marvel Studios has made this possible through the Time Variance Authority (TVA), a bureaucratic organization tasked with preserving the Sacred Timeline that viewers first came to know in Marvel Studios’ Loki on Disney+. The grand schemes of the MCU’s Multiverse Saga have made bringing Hugh Jackman back possible, but is he here to stay?

Kevin Feige Weighs in on Recasting Wolverine
As part of our full Deadpool & Wolverine exclusive interview with Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige, we asked him about the possibility of another, perhaps younger actor, being cast as Wolverine later down the line in the MCU. The world’s most popular film franchise is currently in the middle of teaching its dedicated fan base that truly anything can happen in the multiverse, and Deadpool & Wolverine is only the latest example of that.

The multiverse could potentially open the door for another Logan variant, this time played by a different actor. And seeing how Marvel Studios is in the early stages of building their own interpretation of the beloved X-Men, this could also be how Hugh Jackman passes the baton to some fresh blood. Surprisingly, Feige quickly assured us that “yes,” another actor is bound to eventually take over the mantle of Wolverine. However, it doesn’t sound like that is happening anytime soon. Yes. You know, Marvel is celebrating its 85th anniversary later this summer. That’s just the first 85 years, and Disney just celebrated 100 years as well. I think these characters will be around for another 100 years, long after all of us. So, for sure, there will be [eventually another actor as Wolverine]. I think it will be in a very different style and in a different way. I also think if somebody were to attempt to do a Hugh Jackman as Wolverine impression, that would be a pretty big mistake.


Another Actor Playing Wolverine is “Inevitable,” says Kevin Feige

While it is easy to imagine Hugh Jackman’s Logan coming across another Wolverine variant in the multiverse, it is not in Marvel Studios’ current agenda to replace him. You don’t need to assume that or read between the lines… because Kevin Feige goes on to confirm to us that there are no “immediate plans” to introduce a non-Hugh Jackman version of Wolverine in the MCU. Moreover, even though he does think another actor being cast in the role is “inevitable,” it’s looking like Jackman has got the fan-favorite character locked down, at least for the foreseeable future. As comic readers know, there have been various and very, very different versions of these characters over the decades. It would be fun to explore different ones someday down the line. Again, we don’t have immediate plans by any means. But in the decades to come, I think it’s inevitable. If that happens, it would have to be a very different and bold reinterpretation of [the character] because no one will be as great as Hugh Jackman at doing his version of Wolverine.


Hugh Jackman is Here to Stay for Now
You could say that Kevin Feige is somewhat coy with these answers, but he still clearly confirms to us that there are no foreseeable plans for a new actor to take over the role of Wolverine in the MCU. So, yes, fans should throw away any theories or assumptions about Hugh Jackman once again retiring the adamantium claws, for now. In the meantime, this information makes way for other exciting MCU theories. Since Kevin Feige has previously stated that the X-Men are, in fact, on the way, could the MCU’s iteration of the team feature Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine, but perhaps in a mentor-like role? This has been done before in Marvel comics and television, such as in the underrated Wolverine and the X-Men animated series. In the meantime, MCU fans will have to wait until we get closer to the Multiverse Saga’s conclusion to get solid answers.


Deadpool & Wolverine is all about legacy. Writer-director Shawn Levy (Free Guy, The Adam Project), star-producer Ryan Reynolds, and Wolverine himself, Hugh Jackman, create an unlikely comeback for both titular heroes. The film’s story reframes their place and purpose not only in the MCU franchise but also in the now-dead Fox universe. For that reason alone, it’s hard to imagine anyone else playing either Deadpool or Wolverine as long as the MCU keeps going strong in the coming years. Of course, just like with Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man, who both made nostalgic returns in Spider-Man: No Way Home, many moviegoers will be anticipating to see Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine once more in the upcoming sequel, Avengers: Secret Wars. Jackman & Mangold have teamed up 3 times (Kate&Leopold/TheWolverine/Logan)...and Mangold did some post-prod work for HJ's passion project TheGreatestShowman. They probably already have a shorthand with each other's filmmaking styles(directing&acting) 😊

There's a comic book story of OLD MAN LOGAN. I bought it when I thought it would be the basis for the 2017 movie LOGAN.

While it is about Wolverine/Logan older years -- it goes to a completely different direction. It could be a strong favorite with comicbook fans who like film adaptations.

You might have heard about Joaquin Phoenix abruptly leaving a film project that was due to start in 5 days -- a gay romance between a corrupt cop and another man. Some suggested Hugh Jackman and other names as replacement.

I am not interested in that. Since the theme of police corruption is part of the storyline -- why not consider an adaptation of an early Hugh Jackman- Daniel Craig police drama...where Hugh plays an alpha male rogue cop into whose life a series of tragic events transpire. It even makes reference or hints at the infamous Jeffrey Dahmer case. Issues that remain contemporary. It was said then when the project was under consideration for a film adaptation that Spielberg had expressed early interest. Why early plans for an adaptation were scrapped were never clarified. It would have the same producers as the Bond franchise producers who produced the play on Broadway.

There were plans to adapt this play into a movie ( also with Hugh Jackman & Daniel Craig into the same roles). First screenplay draft already written but producers (same as Bond producers) changed their minds. It could still be worthwhile for a future project?

The police drama (A Steady Rain saw him playing an alpha male rogue cop into whose life a series of tragic events happened.

It is not too late to consider this for a project these days - the subject is still contemporary. Both Hugh Jackman & Daniel Craig are considered current box office draws. Both are theatre-trained and can handle drama.

Jukebox musicals succeed because audiences are generally familiar or even love the music incorporated in the storyline (e.g., Mamma Mia!). Classics (such as Rodgers&Hammerstein) are much loved for the music&the storyline. HughJackman starred in Oklahoma! & did a Carousel concert.

Reynolds and Jackman continue to bask in the glow of their union instead of worrying too much about what is or isn't in their Marvel futures. They're already looking to work together again on something that doesn't even involve superheroes. "We have one we're looking to do soon," Reynolds teases of their next project. "I would say that [ours] is like any relationship that is successful and works: It's that two parties are rooting for each other. I'm always rooting for Hugh to score and win. I also know the infinite nuance of his heart and his mind and who he is. I can say firsthand that he's a person who's not just worth rooting for, he's somebody who's impossible to not root for."

This was before the unexpected success of D&W --

and now there is solid talk about a sequel to that movie, seemindly at the initiative of Marvel itself.

Will this then postpone any non-superhero movie that the duo have been looking into before D&W was released?

Reynolds shared his plans during a recent interview for a Variety Awards Circuit Podcast episode, which is set to be released later this week.

“I’m spending the year writing,” Reynolds said during the podcast. “I’m writing a movie for myself, Hugh [Jackman] and Shawn [Levy] to do that is not Marvel.”


Although the actor kept plot details under wraps, his enthusiasm hinted at something fresh and unexpected, which he will work on over the next 12 months. It’s unknown whether it’s a project that a studio has given the green light. Still, given the explosive popularity of “Deadpool & Wolverine,” this upcoming film will surely become one of Hollywood’s most highly anticipated films.



This project will mark Reynolds’ third collaboration with Levy. Following the action-packed “Deadpool 3,” the duo previously joined forces on 2021’s crowd-pleasing action comedy “Free Guy” and the time-bending sci-fi adventure “The Adam Project.” Their shared track record for creating box office gold has fostered a strong creative chemistry, with Levy bringing out Reynolds’ comedic energy and memorable performances.

The numbers alone speak volumes about their success. “Deadpool & Wolverine” has become a box office behemoth, pulling in an astounding $636 million domestically and securing its place as the 12th highest-grossing film in history. It now sits just behind Pixar’s “Inside Out 2” and ahead of Warner Bros.’ summer sensation “Barbie.” It’s also surpassed the 2019 thriller “Joker” to become the highest-grossing R-rated film ever. And among Disney’s Marvel Cinematic Universe juggernauts, “Deadpool 3” claims the seventh spot, having recently overtaken “Iron Man 3” globally.

Disney is eyeing awards season for the smash hit, pushing for Golden Globes recognition as a comedy and the newly introduced cinematic and box office achievement categories, highlighting its financial successes. To qualify, films must exceed a $150 million gross globally, with a minimum of $100 million in the U.S. alone, or meet comparable streaming metrics.


Oscars attention may also be in the cards, as “Deadpool & Wolverine” seeks technical nods in categories like production design, sound and visual effects. The campaign could even do better than the original “Deadpool” (2016), which earned Golden Globe noms for best motion picture (musical or comedy) and best actor for Reynolds, along with notable mentions from industry guilds like the Directors Guild of America, Writers Guild of America and Producers Guild of America.

Reynolds, fresh off his second consecutive Primetime Emmy win for the popular docuseries “Welcome to Wrexham,” continues to build a multifaceted career that balances commercial hits with critical acclaim.
