On March 2019, the revival of The Music Man was announced to be led by Hugh Jackman!
It promised to open by Sept 2020!

Little did the world know that it will go though one of the most devastating times in history!
But during this interminable time of waiting till the crisis waned or start to wane, the fans hanged on to the slim hope that this revival will happen.

So, close to three years later since it was announced, The Music Man is celebrating its OPENING NIGHT on February 10, 2022

About time for some ‘Music’

Oy. Such hoo-hah being prepped for Thursday’s Broadway opening. “The Music Man.” The Winter Garden. Hasn’t been this much excitement since Biden got a syntax correct.

Originally, nearly 1,400 performances 65 years ago, Meredith Willson’s Best Musical about a con man in middle America’s River City stomped in with a parade and famous falldown fabulous hit “76 Trombones.” It grabbed five Tonys and was made into a 1962 film starring Robert Preston, Hermione Gingold, Buddy Hackett, Shirley Jones.

Now it’s Hugh Jackman, Sutton Foster, Jayne Houdyshell.

Jackman and I first met a load of years ago. It was 2000. He’d just begun twinkling as a big name. Standing in a theater lobby he told me how stardom actually began for him: “Before I made it, I worked kids’ parties as a clown. I still can remember a 6-year-old screaming, ‘He’s not a clown, he’s just a man.’

“What I did was, I resorted to smashing eggs on my head and letting 15 boys jump all over me. It was the hardest $50 I ever earned.”




"The Music Man" will return to the Winter Garden on Broadway.

That was then. This is now. And Thursday 4:45 p.m., a high school band marches up Broadway.

At 5 p.m., there’s a red carpet.

6 p.m., curtain. 8:45 p.m., bows.

Maybe by 11:30 those in the standing ovation

for Jackman — the adored star not the mistreated clown —

will finally sit down.

February 10, 2022 would (should!) have been Peter Allen's 78th birthday.

There's a sort of "full circle" thing there for Hugh's Broadway life.

I'm so glad I saw the first one, and am looking forward to seeing this.

The Boy from Oz paved the way for Hugh's career on Broadway...and now he is leading a major revival ( whoever heard of revivals that cost $24 million to stage?) of one of musical theatre's classic musicals!

I'm so glad Beth told Hugh about the show opening on Peter Allen's birthday. Peter would be thrilled to know that the man who portrayed him so impressively on Broadway will be celebrating the opening of a "new' musical.

‘The Music Man,’ Starring Hugh Jackman & Sutton Foster, Opens On Broadway

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — The Broadway revival of “The Music Man,” starring Hugh Jackman and Sutton Foster, hopes to hit a high note on opening night Thursday.


The biggest and brightest stars were red carpet ready Thursday evening and just starting the march down the red carpet at the Winter Garden Theatre, but as CBS2’s Dave Carlin reports, no matter how much star power there is outside, no one can outshine the energy taking place on that stage.




What ya got right here on Broadway is big LOVE, with a capital L, for Hugh Jackman. Waves of it.


“The Music Man” is already a hit in previews and now comes the starry opening night for this feel-good show, co-starring the luminous, highly energized Sutton Foster.

Jackman took time backstage on Thursday to deliver a message to fans on his Instagram account.

“We are backstage at the Winter Garden Theatre. It’s February 10th, 2022, which means it’s the opening night of ‘The Music Man.’ And I’m only chuckling because this date has been in my head for probably three years plus. I can’t believe we’re here. This is honestly the greatest blessing, greatest joy, the greatest cast and crew and orchestra I’ve had the privilege to work with, and tonight is going to be a celebration. I’m just so, so grateful,” he said.


The delays he spoke of included some early in previews after he tested positive for COVID, right on the heels of Foster testing positive.

Mounting “The Music Man” was often tiring and repeatedly uncertain, and through it all, Jackman made it a point to be head cheerleader for the cast with many fresh-faced ensemble members making their Broadway debuts.



Producers of “The Music Man” are making available 10,000 tickets for New York City public school students, their families and teachers. The tickets are $20 each and donated to schools. Also helping with distribution are about a dozen nonprofit agencies.

That effort, and everything else about this musical, stamps it with the word “happy.”

Thursday’s red carpet festivities included a marching band made up of students from three high schools.

“The city is on fire about this show, and we’re just so thrilled that our New York City artists, our young artists, our kids, are gonna be the first people that the VIP are gonna be seeing,” said Peter Avery, director of theater for the New York City Department of Education.

Thursday night’s VIP red carpet guests included Mayor Eric Adams, Steve Martin, Bradley Cooper and Kristin Chenoweth.

“This is a, a Broadway-friendly mayor,” Adams said.
