Actor Hugh Jackman has said he believes it is "inevitable" that Australia will become a republic in the future.

Speaking on Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg, Jackman said a break with the UK's Royal Family would be "a natural part of evolution".

But the X Men star added that he held "no ill will" towards King Charles and wished the family "all the best".

On the show, he also discussed therapy, his relationship with his children, and his 6,000-calorie-a-day diet.

The Australian actor's parents are both from the UK and he recalls celebrating royal occasions as a child.

"My father made us stop doing whatever we could in 1981 to watch the wedding of Lady Di and Prince Charles," he told the BBC's Laura Kuenssberg.

"We had Champagne... there was no bunting at our house but if my dad could have found it there would have been."

Despite believing that Australia would become a republic, the 54-year-old said he appreciated and admired the work of the Royal Family.

"I've met the Queen on several occasions, the Queen Mother and Prince Charles... and I see and feel a real genuine desire to be of service to the public," he said.

In Jackman's latest film, The Son, he plays a lawyer with a teenage son from a previous marriage who's suffering from depression.

The movie explores absentee parenting and the effects of divorce on children, as well as adolescent mental illness.

"This was a part I knew how to play," said Jackman, who received a Golden Globe nomination for his role.

"I understood that battle of someone who's probably doing too many things at once but feeling that they've got everything under control and they can handle everything," he added.

"It's a little similar to me."


Jackman opened up about his experience of having therapy, saying it had "radically" changed how he sees himself.

He said he was driven by a "perfectionist" streak which made him "able to do things" but he recognised how it had also been "limiting".

"I've realised also through this movie that being vulnerable is actually fine. It's something that everyone relates to. And even my children, I'm more vulnerable with them," he said.

He also said he believed it was time a superhero movie won an Oscar, and he believed the genre was overlooked for nominations in the same way as comedy films.

He also addressed his upcoming role in superhero movie Deadpool 3 alongside Ryan Reynolds.

Ahead of filming, he said he was eating 6,000 calories a day and training every day of the week.

"It's harder when you're 54, let me just say that," he joked.

Great & enjoyable show! Brings back some memories of some of the guests. I saw Oklahoma! in 1999 - did not know the lead, but he had a commanding stage presence & a powerful legit stage voice...waited for him to return to the West End ( but he went further westward - to Hollywood as Wolverine). I saw Three Days of Rain (B'way) -- I only knew Julia Roberts. Did not know the other 2 but I thought one of them was the best actor of the trio ( Name: Paul Rudd... btw, the other one was Bradley Cooper). Never saw her on film and the first one I saw her in it was comedic - -and she was the best actress there. Name of Judi Dench, where she played someone trying to protect the bells of San Gimignano in a WW2 movie set in a Tuscan village. Pink said she never sings ballads... except one that many people fell in love with. First sang by Hugh in Greatest Showman....and done in a cover by Pink & her daughter, A Million Dreams. Michael Douglas - great acting family! They and the other guests (Michael B Jordan & Eugene Levy) -- why not an ensemble movie, maybe one whose original story was written by Agatha Christie?!

Re Hugh --

*amazing how he does not try to steal the spotlight but he ends up in it.
*he is always the best looking of any grouping of guests - also, a good dresser for the occasion.
*his emotional reference to his Dad - probably something he never expected to have happened -- it just brought back memories of what a great father Chris Jackman was. Hugh called him his rock!
*the Hey, Mr Producer concert brought 2 of the most amazing and applauded numbers -- SEND IN THE CLOWNS & the London intro of that cowboy from down under singing "Oh What A Beautiful Morning"
*Real Steel - now Hugh is back doing a movie with Shawn Levy -- more like one showing Jackman with abs of "real steel"!

Btw, he has reduced his calorie intake to 5000 calories a day - compared to his previous regimen of 6000 calories a day.
Cute 10-year-old Oscar moment when he saw Dad kissing someone other than Mum Deb : "You're in so much trouble". I guess he had not seen "The Fountain" or "Australia" before that

The Son director responds to criticism of mental health portrayals

Florian Zeller's directorial debut The Father – adapted from his stage play of the same name – was a huge critical hit when it was released in 2020, earning a Best Picture nomination at the Oscars and helping its star Anthony Hopkins to his second Best Actor win.

Now the French director has once again brought one of his own plays to the screen for his second feature The Son, but the response this time has been less broadly positive, with some critics objecting to the film's portrayal of mental health.



The film – which stars Hugh Jackman, Vanessa Kirby, Laura Dern, and newcomer Zen McGrath – explores a father's attempts to care for his teenaged son as he is going through a major mental health crisis.


Speaking exclusively to RadioTimes.com, Zeller said that while he acknowledged some viewers had not found the depiction of mental health struggles to be "authentic", he had gone to great lengths to ensure that the film was as close to reality as possible.

"It was coming from a personal place, so this is something that was not foreign to me," he explained. "Of course, cinema is about trying to catch something real, so we worked with a lot of American psychiatrists to make sure that we were close to reality.

"Some people were not certain in the end that it was that authentic because I think that... you know, we are talking a lot about mental health issues but I still feel that we are not comfortable talking about it, even though we are using that expression all the time.

"And I was surprised in the US, for example, that we worked with this association named NAMI, the biggest Mental Health Association in the country and they were very supportive of the film – saying that it's so close to what they are experiencing every day. But somehow, I found that some people had trouble to imagine that it was authentic or real."


He added that it was difficult to create "universality" with the film because "in every country it's different and in every family it's different" but pointed out that when the original play was being performed in both Paris and London he received a lot of positive feedback from audience members.

"It was really striking to see the response of the audience," he explained. "People were waiting for us after every performance to share their own story – meaning that when the play was ending something else was beginning, like a conversation.

"And so many people told me, 'I know what you were talking about because of my son, or my daughter, or my uncle, whatever. They were saying something about what they knew, something that maybe they wouldn't have said in another situation, because of the shame and because of the guilt. And that's really what gave me the desire to make this film."
