The 2022 BFI London Film Festival has unveiled its full lineup.

Among the new titles added to the schedule are a number of big hitters that have already bowed in Cannes or are just about to have their world premieres in Venice.

Park Chan-wook’s Cannes best director winner Decision to Leave is among the newly-announced films getting a special gala screening, as is Noah Baumbach’s White Noise (which opened Venice on Wednesday night), Maria Schrader’s She Said, Florian Zeller’s The Son, Darren Aronofsky’s The Whale, Chinonye Chukwu’ Till, Martin McDonagh’s The Banshees of Inisherin, Sebastián Lelio’s The Wonder and Alejandro G. Iñárritu’s Bardo, False Chronicle Of A Handful Of Truths.

Full programme announced for 66th BFI London Film Festival

A dynamic and vibrant programme of 164 feature films from around the world, with all films screening to UK audiences for the first time, including 23 world, 6 international and 15 European premieres.

The 66th BFI London Film Festival (LFF) in partnership with American Express today announces the full programme lineup, which will be presented in cinemas and online, across the UK. Over 12 days from 5 to 16 October, the LFF will return to its fantastic flagship venues in the heart of London – BFI Southbank and the Southbank Centre’s Royal Festival Hall, which between them host Galas, Special Presentations and Official Competition. Films and series from all strands of the festival screen in many of central London’s iconic cinemas with a curated selection of features showcased at 10 partner venues across the UK.

The full programme features films, series and immersive art works from over 63 countries with 41% of the programme made by female and non-binary directors/creators or co-directors/creators and 34% made by ethnically diverse directors/creators.


An impressive number of major alumni filmmakers return to LFF including: Darren Aronofsky, Noah Baumbach, James Benning, Marco Bellocchio, Bertrand Bonello, Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne, Richard Eyre, Kevin Jerome Everson, Patricio Guzmán, Mani Haghighi, Mia Hansen-Løve, Joanna Hogg, Alejandro G. Iñárritu, Rian Johnson, Asif Kapadia, Joe Lawlor and Christine Molloy, Sebastián Lelio, Sébastien Lifshitz, Tobias Lindholm, Edward Lovelace, Martin McDonagh, Santiago Mitre, Michel Ocelot, Ruben Östlund, François Ozon, Park Chan-wook, Alexandre O. Major emerging alumni returning to LFF with new features include: Ali Abassi, Fyzal Boulifa, Lukas Dhont, Alice Diop, Sally El Hosaini, Soudade Kaadan, Hlynur Pálmason, with the festival also introducing audiences to a thrilling new generation of international filmmakers with 39 debut features in LFF.

Every feature and series screens to audiences in the UK for the very first time, with many shown publicly for the first time ever anywhere in the world. Premieres include 23 feature film and 3 series world premieres, 6 feature film international premieres and 15 feature film and 2 series European premieres.

As previously announced the LFF Expanded programme of immersive art features 6 world premieres. World premieres from filmmakers and artists include: Guillermo Del Toro’s Pinocchio; a new series from television auteur Hugo Blick, The English, starring Emily Blunt and a brand new commission AR from acclaimed filmmaker Guy Maddin, Haunted Hotel: A Melodrama in Augmented Reality.



International premieres include She Said, starring Carey Mulligan and Zoe Kazan and based on the book from New York Times journalists Jodi Kantor and Megan Twohey, and award-winning documentary filmmaker Ondi Timoner’s Last Flight Home.

Major European premieres include: Empire of Light from Sam Mendes; Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery from Rian Johnson; My Policeman, directed by Michael Grandage and starring Emma Corrin, Harry Styles and Rupert Everett; Chinonye Chukwu’s Till, starring Danielle Deadwyler and Whoopi Goldberg; Allelujah, directed by Richard Eyre adapted from Alan Bennett’s play, with stars including Judi Dench and Jennifer Saunders; Frank Berry’s Aisha starring Letitia Wright and Josh O’Connor, and Lady Chatterley’s Lover, directed by Laure de Clermont-Tonnerre and also starring Emma Corrin alongside Jack O’Connell.


LFF will host the European premieres of several major new filmmaking voices: Sundance award-winner Nikyatu Jusu with Nanny; acclaimed theatre director Lila Neugebauer’s Causeway starring Jennifer Lawrence and Brian Tyree Henry, and photographer and documentarian Elegance Bratton’s The Inspection.

Audiences will enjoy a rich programme of fiction, documentary, animation, artists’ moving image, short film, newly restored classics from the world’s archives, and exciting international works made in immersive and episodic forms.

LFF for Free will return to BFI Southbank with a programme of in-person events and screenings as well as a programme of free short films and events that will be available across the UK virtually. The festival will also be accessible UK-wide via a specially curated programme of feature and short films on BFI Player, which viewers will be able to enjoy for a full week after the festival (from 14 to 23 October).

This morally knotty, thematically complex and thoroughly engrossing film finds Zeller working at the height of his powers as a screenwriter and director, following his Oscar-winning collaboration with Christopher Hampton on The Father (2020). Working with Hampton again, Zeller’s new film focuses on Peter (Hugh Jackman), a hyper-successful lawyer embarking on a new life with his young wife (Vanessa Kirby) and baby, his bitter and heartbroken ex-wife Kate (Laura Dern) and their troubled young son Nicholas (Zen McGrath). When Nicholas begins behaving oddly, skipping school and disappearing for long stretches of time, neither Peter nor Kate know quite what to do. As the characters struggle to deal with the boy’s worrying behaviour, the true nature of their relationships is laid excruciatingly bare, and the film evolves into a gripping psychological drama. Featuring a career-best performance from Jackman and a brief, unforgettable cameo from Anthony Hopkins as one of the most thoroughly monstrous characters he has ever played, The Son is a powerful and devastating drama by one of the most exciting filmmakers working today.

On the other hand, Hugh Jackman has an impressive acting portfolio. The Son could be the culminating portrayal after Logan, Les Miserables, Prisoners, Greatest Showman, The Prestige, The Fountain & Bad Education! He deserves to be recognized for his work in so many genres

With The Son, Florian Zeller Wants to Make Audiences Uncomfortable
The playwright and director follows up his 2020 Oscar-winning drama The Father with a look at divorced parents struggling to save their teenage son.

Many directors who find massive success with debut films struggle with what to take on next. Not Florian Zeller. The French playwright turned director, who won the best-adapted-screenplay Oscar for cowriting the 2020 drama The Father, was already hard at work at his follow-up as he was navigating the awards circus that year.

A guide to Hollywood’s biggest races

Zeller, working with his cowriter Christopher Hampton, was determined to adapt his 2018 play Le Fils—a story centering on divorced parents whose teenage son is struggling with mental illness. Zeller, who spent the COVID-19 lockdown in 2020 writing the script, calls The Son, which is part of a trilogy of plays that also includes The Mother, his most personal work.


Zeller’s work has a knack for pulling uncomfortable emotions out of audiences. With The Father, we watched on as a woman (Olivia Colman) witnessed the unraveling of her father as he fell deeper into the depths of dementia (Anthony Hopkins, in an Oscar-winning performance). In The Son, which will debut at the Venice Film Festival on September 7 ahead of a theatrical release on November 11 by Sony Pictures Classics, parents played by Hugh Jackman and Laura Dern struggle to understand their teenage son’s (Zen McGrath) increasingly intense anger at life—and their attempts to help him often lead to disaster.

“It’s so difficult to be a good father or a good mother and to deal with a situation when you do not know what to do anymore,” says Zeller, who has a son and stepson with his wife Marine Delterme. He remembers how after the play debuted in Paris, audience members would come up to him afterward to share their own experiences with mental health and family issues. “This is when I really realized that so many people related to this,” he says. “There is so much shame and ignorance about mental health issues, that it was a way for me to share what I learned and also to open a conversation.


In the film (Awards Insider debuts new exclusive images from The Son here), Nicholas can only describe his as a crushing weight taking away his will to live. That ambiguity only elevates his parents’—and audiences’—frustration about how to fix it.

“As an audience, what I really like is to be in an active position; not just to sit and to watch a story that’s already written and told, but to be part of the narrative and to be active,” says Zeller. “It’s a way to open the conversation and not to shy away from these topics, because I know that it takes time to face the right questions. And sometimes this is the time we do not have, to avoid tragedy.”
