One recent survey found more than a third of high school students surveyed in the United States experienced stress, anxiety or depression, and nearly a fifth said they seriously considered suicide during the pandemic.

“This mental health issue is a crisis everywhere in the world. No one is immune to it,” said Jackman. “This is something that we need to talk about and come together on,” he said.

Almost half of young people in Spain admit to having had suicidal ideation in the last year. 56% have suffered mental health problems, although half of them did not ask for help, either for economic reasons or because they considered it not to be an important issue. These are data from a study by the FAD Fundación Juventud that make clear the importance of talking about mental health. A problem that, after the pandemic, has finally been put in the focus of public opinion. Until recently, whoever went to the psychologist was looked at as the weirdo. Something is changing, and it shows that cinema also addresses this problem.


So does The Son, the film with which Florian Zeller continues the trilogy that will adapt his plays and that began with the imposing The Father. Here he replaces Anthony Hopkins – who won the Oscar and here he has a small and important role – with Hugh Jackman, who plays a successful lawyer who faces the mental health problems of the son he had with his previous partner, played by Laura Dern. Jackman was so moved by The Father that when he learned that Florian Zeller was preparing the adaptation of The Son he read the play and wrote him a letter saying that he would love to be the protagonist. The director was surprised with the actor's courage, and after some meetings he saw that both felt the same passion for the project, and that together they could achieve "something that impacted and had a lot of truth". "I had the intuition and I think it's the best decision I could make. Hugh Jackman is a professional, he's like a very technical dancer who wants to control everything. And this story is about a man who loses control, so the idea was to put us all in a situation where we couldn't control things. That's why I made the decision not to rehearse and jump into the unknown and discover on set the emotions that came to us and try to catch them, hug them and share them with the audience."

The actor says that he is not normally so passionate about getting a role, but that this one was special, he had "the instinct" to do it. It has been the most intense role of his life, the most important challenge. A project that came with COVID and was coupled with a complicated personal moment for him. "My wife and I were very nervous and didn't go out or do anything. And I remember a few times in the process of preparing the film I had trouble sleeping. I don't think I admitted it at the time, but sometimes I was falling apart a bit. And I'm sure this paralleled what I was going through. My father died during filming, so it was a very intense period for me and I'm so grateful to have had a friend and a director to trust."



A project in which the actor undertakes one of his most dramatic and serious roles, far from his profile as an action hero or actor in musicals, a film that reminds him why he decided to be an actor: "It was to grow as a person, I am more interested in the big issues of life than the idea of being famous or successful."

Hugh Jackman's chances were hampered by the critical disdain for the movie. It cannot be denied however that his portrayal has been lauded by so many.

I think the issue of mental illness is a very current one and he could articulate very well why the theme of the movie appealed to him in taking the role. Hopefully, if he gets nominated and after his Music Man run finishes, he will be able to spend a lot of time talking about the movie during Q&A's when the movie is screened ( if it gets a Best Picture nomination) or in roundtable discussions ( like those conducted by Deadline, Hollywood Reporter, Variety) or single interviews. Quite apart from the issue of mental illness, there is also a lot that can be discussed about the movie itself.

To me, one particular question lurks in my mind.


Interestingly, the win by Colin Farrell will now be looked at with the same view as the narrative being talked about re Fraser's chances - it is a comeback story. Both actors' campaigns will be viewed as comeback stories now?

Hopefully, the critic reception to THE SON will improve ( only 16 so far on Rotten Tomatoes) and we hope to see a mirror of the standing ovation seen in Venice for the movie when general audiences see the film.

The Academy is sticking with March as prime Oscars real estate, as the group announced Friday its key awards dates for the 2022-2023 season.

As it has for decades, ABC will again broadcast the 95th Academy Awards on Sunday, March 12 — roughly two weeks earlier than the March 27 date of the 94th ceremony earlier this year, but still a few weeks later than the traditional late-February window in which the Academy typically hands out its awards.

Nominations for the 2023 Oscars will be announced on Tuesday, Jan. 24, with the voting window lasting just five days between Jan. 12-17.

I read somewhere that Hugh is doing a press tour for The Son.

Maybe something similar to when he did the media tour for one day for Logan in NYC ( after filming for 24 hours for Greatest Showman).

Hugh is the best one to promote the show. He is well-known to the media ( and likely has a friendly relationship for most of them). He is also very articulate and can better express his thoughts on the movie and its objectives. Hopefully, it can clarify some of the wrong perspective some media and many fans have taken about the show.

Also, it can be partly used to start his Oscar campaign. With a cover story from Variety, especially if it delves on how his career has evolved - Ampas voters may rethink any other considerations re Fraser & Butler.

While Zeller can express himself in English, he is not able to show eloquence when talking of an important subject like mental health. Hugh is the best candidate for it ( I wonder if he will refer to his own personal background and his new advocacy on mature men mental health issues).

Of course Wolverine will come into the conversation - again, an opportunity for him on why the choice to him is both professional and personal.
