Great Acting, A Movie Not For Everyone To Understand

Depression is a medical illness, the genius of the plot is to show how difficult it is for a family to recognize it. For most people might be another everyday drama of someone with a trauma, but its not, it is more complex. This type of illness might seem like a ghost state in a person, unexplainable and without sense but it is a real chemical issue inside the brain. I really enjoyed the whole movie, it did not had to be in the artistic side like "The Father" to show an interesting family drama focused on someone's uncomprehended illness disguised in a teenager behaviour living through his parents divorce. I would say you could give it chance with some patience and empathy.

If your idea of entertainment is watching a petulant adolescent moan and whine for a couple of hours, then you're in luck. " The Son " could be more aptly titled " The Sulk" as our central character pouts and wears his alienated adolescent psychodrama on his sleeve while being unable or unwilling to verbalize exactly what is bugging him ( which appears to be based on little or nothing considering his high end New York City lifestyle ) so that we have to play detective in order to figure out what the kid's issue is. The problem, however, is that there's no aspect of this melodrama engaging enough to make us care. The titular character is relentlessly annoying and vague. Clearly, depression is a serious issue, but a little illumination or insight may have provided the story line some with some compelling complexity as opposed to the bludgeoning endured under this one note script. How fine actors like Jackman and Dern got roped into this pity festival is anybody's guess. Like " The Whale ", persons with significant personality dysfunction in current culture have morphed into entertainment icons simply by virtue of their grandiose mental disorders. Maudlin is the motif here, so have fun.

Watch this movie and you'll see what NOT to do to your intact family.

I gave this movie a high score not for the acting but the message behind it. This family would not have been in such a turmoil if the father understood the devastation it would cause to be so destructive by his action to the people who loved him. Him and his girlfriend try to sugarcoat the stench of their relationship but at the end its not enough. The father will pay an unmanageable price of guilt for the rest of his life from his choice of leaving the family. This movie also shows the terrible heartbreak and mental breakdown of the wife and mother by the man's selfish decision.

Looking at some of reactions on social media -- the general impression is while it is sad and heartbreaking, hardly any comment that it is bad filmmaking ( which many of the critics noted).

Not all movies are meant to entertain. Some movies are meant to inform or to educate. Some movies are meant to explain how life really is for some people. This movie stands at the pinnacle for trying to help others comprehend mental heath issues that very few people understand. If you haven't lived that life, please shut up and save your artistic criticisms for another movie. I don't care what you think. This movie tried to look at the mental health issue from all sides - parent, child, and other loved ones. It was gut wrenching. It was an extraordinarily realistic depiction of what goes on in a family torn apart by mental health battles. Life becomes a war zone. And during the battle or after the war you begin to reflect and it tears you apart. You ask yourself what just happened. You ask yourself how it happened. And guess what - you have no answers to your questions. Bravo Mr. Zeller.

My story and the importance of a single decision

It has taken me a few minutes to calm down from crying harder than I have cried in a very long time to start. What a ride. This movie was one of if not the most emotional movie I have ever seen in my life because, well I am the son but the reason I'm here writing this review today, figuratively and literally, is how this movie shows the important of a single decision and is truly a masterpiece of a film.

My my was/is the mother, my dad was is/the father, stepmom and half sister with similar age range. I found my self in a center similar to this in the exact same scenario except mine was enhanced with drugs but I had that same exact conversation with the doctor and my parents. My parents listened to the doctor and forced me to stay and if it wasn't for that single decision I would have been the son and would most likely not be here today. Frankly I'm not sure how I still am trust me I tried. My next phase was even worse but I'm happy to say I am almost 30 and am genuinely happy with myself and am working towards what I truly want to do and was able to break away from the control the father has over the son but my father makes his father look amazing.

This movie showed me a 3rd person view of my legitimately exact same scenario and showed me how damn far I have come and how much I truly owe it to some higher damn power that I am here today. This was hands down the most emotionally intense movie for me as it hit so close to home in landed in my lap.

Let me tell you from experience. It's describes the feeling and scenario extremely accurately.

I have noticed that in the more recent reviews (especially after the movie was streamed ) that there are many stories shared of the story of THE SON being realistic, in some cases, actually mirroring what some have experienced in real life. And the reactions come from quite a few places in the world.

Some have expressed gratitude for having been shown such an emotional story even if there is no personal concern. It is a respite from the throng of superhero movies, mindless comedies & inane storytelling.

If only the movie has been subtitled in many languages and shown in more countries, it can contribute a lot to put the universal concern of mental health more at the forefront.

Absentee parents thinking growth is just an automatic outcome for teens left on their own. After being alerted to truant behavior they still left kid to his own devices while he slipped further into depression. The ending was easy to foresee but their time was taken by new baby and job requirements, so the viewer had the advantage. I was only half interested until the hospital scene when I was taken back 25 years to the day my youngest son (diagnosed with schizophrenia) begged me not to leave him at a mental facility. This film may seem dark and heavy to some but the realism is accurate and important.

So much praise for Hugh Jackman's acting.

How can his performance been ignored ( except for the Golden Globe nomination)?

A portrayal of how paternal behavior can happen in real life...and therefore an insight on the inevitable consequence. Lessons learned ( in most cases addressing a universal health concern) is more important than seeing actors coming from difficult circumstances (obesity) or chances for recognition (being POC). That the AMPAS failed is part of a growing concern from auteurs that artistry is no longer important for awards recognition. There is further proof to this when the AMPAS issued rules that require inclusivity in any movie that hopes to be accorded honors by the Academy.

Why has the AMPAS gone out of its way to recognize WOKE portrayals, instead of paying tribute to realism and to exceptional acting portrayals? How sad!
