Parenting is a thin line and human emotions cannot be understood only by love. A beautiful portrayal of how life influences oneself, how the past teaches one yet the lesson might not be the right one.

I read a quote attributed to Charles Wandsworth "By the time a man realizes that maybe his father was right, he usually has a son who thinks he's wrong." Although this feature is titled "The Son", it is more about the father.

The movie is an impeccable work of art, the music, the acting, the lighting, the camera work, the direction, the screenplay, the story all were brilliant and although the end was obvious but the manner it was portrayed was haunting.

This movie troubled me. As a father to a teenage boy it resonated deeply. Let me start off by saying that the effects of divorce on children can be massive. This is a fact based in reality. I've heard countless spiral stories including my own wife's where divorce was a cataclysmic explosion that nearly ended their own lives. Coupled with mental illness the result can often be tragic and perhaps impossible to recover from. In any case the acting here was brilliant on all fronts. Jackman was completely believable and the son nailed his part as a disturbed young man. I wanted so badly for things to end better but my rationale knew better. Would things have changed if the gun was removed from the picture? If the parents had left him at the psychiatric ward? Who knows. It could have merely delayed the inevitable. The boy was so troubled it would seem irreparable. In any case this film is designed with one grand purpose of that I am certain. To magnify and evangelize two colossal social issues: suicide awareness and mental health crisis. These are no joke and need to be addressed and berated even until we can attempt to find any cure. The film was a steady ascent up the mountain of doom and the climax was predictable. It simply didn't get better. The tragedy of what could have been haunts me. The scene where the son is at the hospital and cries out to his dad, "you know me!" nearly ripped me in half. All I know is that after watching this I hugged my son goodnight with a purposeful and emphatic grip that caused him to ask if everything was ok. I hope it is my little man. By God I pray it is.

Best movie I've seen this year

Florian Zeller's great work in writing the screenplay of The Son is a complete masterpiece. I have to say i have felt deep profound pain and immense sadness in the end of the movie.

This movie makes you realise what kind of effects a seperation and or a divorce can have on a young child growing up Hugh Jackman (The father)& Zen McGrath(The Son do an immense job as actors. Simply authentic, realistic & real life, true life possible.

You never know when you will be put in a position as a parent to have to take the one these parents take in the end and even after all the advice that can be given from others or medical personal.

This movie is a must!

A 2hr run i could watch one more anytime!

Great watch, especially for parents of teens

I'm a retired school teacher and principal. I have worked with teenagers for all of my adult life. I have mentored and counseled many. Mental illness is a very real issue across America and I'm sure in the entire world. This movie addresses a very serious issue that parents face with their teens. The love of a parent can be so strong that sometimes we hurt our kids unintentionally. This movie sends out a very strong message and parents need to pay attention.

The acting is excellent even though I wasn't impressed with the young man playing the son. Hugh Jackman is amazing. Of course, my wife and I are big fans of his. Some reviewers said that it was a tough watch but I recommend it as a necessary watch.
