Fear is a Powerful Force

Many reviewers have discussed the depressed boy character and whether or not the young actor represented his condition accurately. But here's the thing: He wasn't just depressed. He was terrified of life.

This boy was deeply sensitive, and emotionally frail by nature. He was also an only child, used to being part of a team with his mom and dad flanking him.

The divorce simply exposed him for who he truly was. Which was a weak, needy, and frightened child.

Then there is the circumstance of being the son of a powerful and wildly successful father. For a sensitive boy the pressure to live up to his father's expectations or fill his shoes would cause enormous anxiety.

What he was trying to tell people was that he felt overwhelmed by the pressures of life. He wasn't equipped emotionally to handle the challenges of growing up. He sensed it internally and it freaked him out. Previously the only thing that gave him solace was the security provided by his loving married parents.

Meanwhile the father was driven by the need to be a more honorable man than his own father had been. Despite having the same types of professional pressures.

Very virile men, like the stud that Hugh Jackman plays here need a young woman in their life. His original wife got old, and he traded her out for a newer model. It's a common phenomenon. He didn't get a trophy wife per say. Just someone fresher.

I was extremely impressed with Hugh Jackman's performance. Because he was clearly someone so committed to earnestness that it sometimes came across as awkward or forced.

It is also possible that he may have been emotionally weak himself. Which seemed to be what his dad was implying during their brief encounter. It wouldn't be unusual for such a man to produce a child, (the boy), with similar internal qualities.

As others have said, Laura Dern has covered this range before, and always excels. The Kirby gal who played the new wife was impressive. I believed her.

Fear is one of the most powerful forces in the universe. I believe it ruled this boy to the point of near insanity.

Other than one brief mention by an office associate about social justice initiatives related to Jackman's law firm, there were no homages to woke culture here. Nor any cliche uses of violence or sex. I could see that it was a play. It could also have been a movie from the late 70s or early 80s like of course Ordinary People.

Where it failed was in lack of character development. I need to know more about Jackman's character, his dad, his wife and of course the boy. How could anyone not realize this and plug it into the screenplay?

I too am surprised by bad reviews. I am not ever drawn to these types of movies (depressing) but for some reason watched this. I love Hugh Jackman and Anthony Hopkins so watch pretty much anything they are in. I thought the acting in this movie by everyone was excellent. The Son, Zen McGrath, was outstanding. The love the parents had for their son was, in my opinion, portrayed excellently. The Suspicions by the new wife, Vanessa Kirby, realistic and understandable. I do not have personal experience with depression but from others that I know of his portrayal of not feeling well, or like something is wrong, it fitting in are what my friends go through. I don't know what the "obvious" flaws are that others mentioned except keeping a gun in a house with a suicidal son. But even that could get justified that he forgot about it, or the timing of not thinking about it is believable to me. The effects of divorce I do have first hand experience with and my own son has life long struggles from it. That is also believable to me and a child with clinical depression may very well react this way. It was heart wrenching. So well acted.

And the only thing that made me mad was the last few lines where Vanessa Kirby is telling him to think of Theo. Those words, would be the wrong thing to say at that time of his meltdown. That was heartbreaking hearing that. I am a mother of two sons and although you know you have to go on for the other that does not negate the pain of losing the other. You don't just put it to the side. That is my only criticism. Excellent acting in this movie. Well done. But not sure why any of us watch something so depressing.

I felt such pain watching the Actors go through this. The most honest, respectful way it needed to be told. The Filmmaker has incredible Vision WOW! I appreciate him I suffered as, a child my Mother's untreated undiagnosed Depression. She overdosed constantly I was powerless.🙏🏼

Touching, painful, and very real

Great acting from everyone involved. The story is almost too real at times, and absolutely told an accurate story of the darker side of the adolescent psychological experience, and well as its effects on a broken family. Characters all reacted genuinely, and you truly understand each point of view. It's a bit long-winded, but this story was definitely told thoroughly and beautifully. There is truly no villain in this film, and it was far more compelling than I initially expected having absolutely no knowledge or expectations whatsoever. Highly recommend, cant imagine why anyone would leave a negative review.

I find it hard to believe the book was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize. It is obvious from the very beginning how this will end. Anyone who has ever experienced depression or knows someone who has would never have behaved they way they do as the parents in this film. Aside from expecting a little more from the excellent cast, the plot is so slow. I had to turn the movie off and finish the next day as it put me to sleep. The end is no shocker and you are left just being angry with the ignorance of the parents. Parents should love their children, but when they don't listen to a doctor firmly telling them the choice they had, they obviously chose poorly.

*How can THE SON be a potential winner of the Pulitzer Prize? It was originally written in France... and staged in English in London. ("The Pulitzer Prize is an award administered by Columbia University for achievements in newspaper, magazine, online journalism, literature, and musical composition within the United States")

*Reviewer does not think parents can behave like this? Ha!
