He wasn't signing... a few times he would symbolically close his fingers upwards as if to apologize not to be able to do so.

Love the encouragement that Hugh has given Zen McGrath ( he embraced his young countryman during the long ovation)!

Have you read the play? It is NOT "terrible and unbearable writing"...and the cast are well-known talented actors in dramatic movies (Jackman/Dern/Kirby/Hopkins and newcomer Mcgrath). Check out the reviews on the thread Official Reviews. Probably the best desciption is MIXED REVIEWS. But then - look at the example of THE GREATEST SHOWMAN ( also one of Mixed Reviews). I would also cite THE FOUNTAIN. On another branch of the performing arts - THE BOY FROM OZ almost went funereal due to the terrible reviews. Same is true for THE MUSIC MAN - yet social media is filled with joyous appreciation of the show? Zeller is a celebrated playwright ( who won an Oscar for ADAPTED SCREENPLAY for THE FATHER) in France and has been called "the most exciting playwright of our times" in the UK (where his Anglicized plays have been staged). His plays have been staged in 45 countries. After THE SON, he has just been asked to do a serial adaptation for US TV of the famous and celebrated play THE LEHMAN TRILOGY. THE SON is a deep and unsettling drama of a family in crisis ... and some people may not like how the storyline develops. I think the main issue is that people expected a movie where the person who suffers from depression goes into every step of his path to a possible tragic end or to a cure. In interviews, Zeller said he simply wanted to open the conversation on the issue of mental health. And he simply wanted to go direct to consequences. Some say it is manipulative...but then I read that THE WHALE is "gross manipulative". Sad to say it seems some critics think they are better filmmakers than actual filmmakers Hugh is a very intelligent and experienced actor ( his 2nd degree was in dramatic theatre) - he read the play and he was affected enough to have gone directly to Zeller ( who did not know him personally) to ask that he be considered for the role. I would trust his judgment - but it is up to you if you don't want to give it a chance? But how did this movie earn a 10-minute standing ovation in Venice ( with an audience mix which includes prominent and sophisticated people - you can see from the attendees) if it is so terrible. Maybe some don't have a taste for the subject or prefer to see a movie which has a neat solution? And Hugh has been generally praised for his acting in this movie - some say, it is a career-best! Do we want him always heroic in every movie - that is a thought One way to find out -- maybe join the advance screening on Oct 23 as well as the online talk with Zeller and Jackman? I guess in the end, to each his own? Jo

Re Hugh Jackman's choices --
it is interesting to note that he has recently said that his preference now in his choice of film scripts ... are those "that deal with big issues in life" - the direction which has been evident in his later movies. Maybe some of us prefer him to do other types of movies... but some may prefer to see him evolve in his choices of stories to tell hence?
