A coterie of we Hugh fans fortunate enough to be within commuting distance of the Winter Garden theater or able to travel from afar had a wonderful day yesterday helping HJ celebrate his 54th birthday. Along with others, I went to both birthday shows today at THE MUSIC MAN, and boy, did they--and we--have a party. It began outside at the barricade. Most everyone gave birthday presents, edible and otherwise, to HJ. The wonderful moderators of Jackman's Landing, Louisa and Sue, were there as well as two lovely ladies from Germany, fervent fans who brought gifts as well as party hats for the fans at the barricade (presaging what was to come after the evening performance). They strung a Happy Birthday banner on the barricade that caught Hugh's eyes upon arrival pre-matinee, as we all began singing "Happy Birthday"-- the first of at least four other such serenades sung at or in the theater that day. We noted a huge bag of birthday balloons and loads of boxes of party goodies come through the stage door.
During the matinee curtain call, Sutton informed those in the audience who did not know that today was Hugh's birthday and called upon maestro Patrick Vaccariello to begin leading the happy birthday song. The audience happily joined in. Upping the ante at the evening performance, every seat contained a party hat and a noise blower. The evening playbills explained why and invited the audience to keep the items secret and share in the birthday merriment upon Sutton's cue at curtain call. At that point we were to don the items and begin singing. HJ's happy and appreciative reactions to both shows of affection--he was visibly surprised and moved after seeing the entire audience in unexpected festoonery singing their hearts out--were captured in part on video and in photos graciously featured by JL on its Facebook/Meta and Twitter pages.
Still wearing their party hats, the crowd at the evening barricade once again wished (and sang) HJ a "Happy Birthday" as he thanked us all, posed for a few photos and made his way to his car. Fun day for us fans and hopefully an unforgettable and happy birthday for HJ.
Ellen

Thanks, Ellen, for sharing those Hugh birthday moments Hugh did seem really touched ( a few clips also appearing from some fans). This past few weeks must make him very happy -- *Broke the internet when his return to Wolverine was announced. *Those lovely birthday moments at the Winter Garden...and the kilometric ( 2 days length) list of birthday wishes on Twitter! So much admiration and affection for Hugh! Jo

Brittlestar is obviously making fun of the “rivalry” between Hugh & Ryan. Hugh says it’s “glitchy” because changing “Hugh” to “Ryan Reynolds” was purposely poorly done. Hysterical! 😂
