Director Shawn Levy has no problem sharing how “Deadpool 3” ends.

Levy, who will receive the Toronto International Film Festival‘s inaugural Norman Jewison Career Achievement Award, stopped by the L.A. Times video studio at the festival to discuss his upcoming miniseries “All the Light We Cannot See.” But the filmmaker could not avoid fielding questions about the upcoming Marvel antihero film and its star, Ryan Reynolds.

“OK, get ready,” Levy said, staring directly into the camera. “‘Deadpool 3’ ends with the end credits.”

Levy also shared some truth bombs about the public “feud” slash simmering bromance between “Deadpool 3” stars Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman.

The bromance “is real,” Levy said. “It’s f— real ... The guys love each other almost as much as Ryan Reynolds and I love each other. Because that bromance is a tale for all time.”


In addition to his career achievement honor, Levy is attending TIFF as the director of “All the Light We Cannot See.” Developed and written by Steven Knight, the four-episode limited series is based on Anthony Doerr’s eponymous Pulitzer Prize-winning novel about two teenagers during World War II.

“I love the book,” Levy said. “I try to make things that I either am or would be a fan of. It’s why I made ‘Stranger Things.’ It’s why I’m making ‘Deadpool.’ And ‘All the Light We Cannot See’ was a book, maybe my favorite book of the last decade. So the day that I got the rights to this book and knew that I could collaborate with that creative genius was a happy day.”

The adaptation features Aria Mia Loberti as Marie-Laure LeBlanc, a blind French girl who is hiding from the Nazis with her father (Mark Ruffalo) in her uncle’s house in St. Malo, as well as Louis Hofmann as Werner Pfennig, a German boy forced to fight for the Nazi regime.

Levy, whose producing credits also include “Shadow and Bone,” “The Adam Project” and “Unsolved Mysteries,” also discussed jumping between comedic and dramatic projects.


“I don’t find them that different because at the end of the day, you’re trying to get that actor to feel comfortable being their best,” Levy said. “If you’re going for a laugh, you want that actor loose. If you’re going for emotion, you want that actor loose. My job is to identify the tone of the material [and] create a connection with the actor so that I’m setting them up to be their best selves and do their best work.”

As if you'd want anyone else working to bring one of the most anticipated superhero movies to life, Deadpool 3 director Shawn Levy tells EW a legion or nerds (said with affection) helped him develop Hugh Jackman's comic-accurate Wolverine suit for the upcoming blockbuster.

"Like the rest of the world, I've waited two decades to see Wolverine in a whole movie with Deadpool, and I don't know if this is our last shot at Wolverine on screen, so I was going to make goddamned sure we get the old yellow and blue just once, and that we get it right," Levy tells EW at the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival, in an interview for his upcoming Netflix series based on the novel All the Light We Cannot See.

Photos from the set of the film leaked earlier this year, teasing Jackman's return as the famous comic book character alongside Ryan Reynolds' Deadpool. The Australian actor first played Wolverine in the 2000 superhero smash X-Men, and appeared in several series installments through to 2017's Logan. He's set to reprise the character in the third Deadpool film, this time wearing a suit reminiscent of the one worn in the comics and the X-Men animated series from the '90s.

Levy explains that he and his team went through "multiple, multiple, multiple iterations and fittings" to make sure the suit was correct. "It also helps that I'm making this movie within the MCU, so I have access to an army of the nerdiest nerds available to a Marvel project," he continues.

He also says that he and Reynolds "wanted our movie to be grounded and not feel like a bunch of physical environments filmed on a soundstage," leading them to shoot large portions of the movie on location, which is, he says, how photos of Jackman's role leaked in the first place. "Fortunately," he adds, "it seems global reaction to those costumes has been overwhelmingly positive, so all's well that ends well."

Other casting rumors for the project have included Jennifer Garner returning as Elektra — the heroine she last portrayed in the 2005 Daredevil spin-off Elektra — as well as Liev Schreiber in the role of Sabretooth from X-Men Origins: Wolverine.

"I'd rather not weigh in on that, but I'll say this," Levy teases. "The rumors of actors, singers, sports stars who are all apparently in Deadpool 3 are fabulous. If all I read was the internet, I would have the greatest cast ever assembled in the history of cinema, so I'll simply say that some of those rumors are true, and some of them aren't."

Deadpool 3 — with Morena Baccarin, Brianna Hildebrand, Emma Corrin, and Rob Delaney also among the confirmed cast — is set for release in 2024.

Someone speculated that the delay in filming is costing Marvel Studio a hefty amount, including reinstalling sets if and when the strikes end.

However, Shawn Levy has reassured that many of the filming was done outside ( and not in a digital environment) to give s a sense of reality, rather than digitized scenes. Does this reduce the cost of rental of sound stages ( they are ensconced at Pinewoood)for the duration of the strikes? Maybe not, because Disney is supposed to be in a longterm lease arrangements, so accounting-wise it is a sunk cost and may or may not be relevant to the cost of this movie. It will be the cost of reinstalling major sets that will add additional expenses to this film's production cost. Also, relevant costs for housing the major stars and creatives mean further extension. If the strikes are settled closer to winter - will they restart filming during that time...or wait till early spring?

Someone also noted that Hugh may become tired of sustaining his diet and training regimen if he has to do it on protracted basis. His trekking through the English countryside is likely keeping him fit, so long as he does not cheat on his cheat meals ( eat them oftener than allowed ).

With further delays, will this result in pushing the release date to 2025? Levy has said that they are halfway through the filming. If they were able to do preliminary editing of the filmed scenes, that could help ( assuming the edit teams are not part of any relevant unions - maybe not?). Maybe film scoring can also be initiated? And maybe other post-production work on some aspect can also be initiated?

The delays have been speculated that the release could be pushed back to the original schedule of November 2024?

Shawn is a bit chatty in this interview ( he is receiving an award and presenting one of his movies at the Toronto filmfest (TIFF) & that is why the press has access to him.

*While DEADPOOL/WOLVERINE is on filming pause, "we are editing"!

*he repeats the concept of realism that they are trying to ingest into this movie vs the expected appeal of an MCU movie ( spectacle, etc) - it is going to be "raw & gritty"!

*his relationship with Ryan & Hugh is one of confidence with each other's ability to project the right artistic vein. Hugh worked with him in that movie that surprised us all because of its heart at the center of its story - Real Steel.

His comment that he did not prioritize special effects ( so, as the Collider editor suggested, it can be finalized during the strike break) means he was not planning a typical MCU movie - but a real two-hander which is raw and gritty ( evolving the characters as solo heroes and then fusing their energies and incompatibilities to resolve the main plot challenge ( whoever the enemies are) while the audience sees the uncovering of 2 different superhero personalities.

I really think it was deliberate because if he were just focused on special effects type of movie, it would have been easy to ask the creatives to work on special effects in the first half of filming.


He had hinted that this will be " Deadpool & Wolverine"!
