Re the Mangold comments -- Personally, James Mangold should have been more politically-correct with his comments, seeing that we have not seen the new movie featuring Wolverine & Deadpool. JM has always been a candid person but his time with LOGAN was another time in the world of superhero films. The genre is now suffering somehow with franchise fatigue ( how many excellent sequels and prequels can one generate ) or people are now looking for other kinds of entertainment ( having seen other genres during the pandemic). Also, the XMen franchise is having a hard time getting folded into the MCU (Marvel Studios) after its mother studio (Fox) got folded into Disney... hopefully, this new movie will speed up the process? Hopefully, those comments do not strain the friendship and professional relationship of Hugh Jackman & James Mangold as the two of them have turned out good/excellent movies ( Kate&Leopold/TheWolverine/Logan). Mangold knows that it was Hugh's decision which facilitated this project approval. Jo

Now the fans are giving Mangold flack! If at all, he should have spoken about the new movie AFTER it has been released and is an utter disappointment. Now, some fans may even boycott the latest Indiana Jones because of his hostility/jealousy?

Is this how Wolverine will look in the movie? Gray beard...and some gray in the hair? So, not LOGAN time (2029?) but not too distant past? Jo

From AVClub itself --
We are not psychologists, but we’re pretty sure that overjoyed directors don’t refer to franchise’s they’ve worked on as dripping rags being relentlessly squeezed out by the relentless hands of the studio. Still, it hasn’t stopped Mangold from continuing on his particular odd course of mindful franchise movie-making: He’s got a Swamp Thing movie on the books at DC Films, and a Star Wars movie, described as “a Ten Commandments about the dawning of the Force,” in the works at Disney, so those rags are just gonna keep getting squeezed, it seems.

Non William Hughes 6/24/23 7:48pm I don’t disagree that there’s no need to keep bringing it back, and at a certain point it starts to resemble the original Star Trek cast doing movies into the 90s, but there’s a level of delusion and self-importance in taking the position that the big mass appeal franchise character should be retired once you’ve done your “elevated”(ish) version, no? Like, what, Mangold thought he’d repositioned the character to the extent that it would transcend ercantile reality? Is Mangold under the impression that his Logan film would have gone ahead if it wasn’t for the fact that the character and performer is infinitely exploitable? What a wacko.

Uselessbeauty Non 6/24/23 8:11pm Plus, even at the time they went out of their way to called Logan an alternate future story in the sense that it could be seen as the final Wolverine story but that it wasn’t definitively the future of the characters who we had only just seen largely resurrected a few years earlier in Days of Future Past.

A fan of Logan and Mangold writes a very long treatise (series of tweets) on why he thinks LOGAN deserves no additional movies. To each his own!

Could the new storyline be similar to this supposed original plot concept?

This seems to connote that FOX was open for the return of Wolverine beyond LOGAN, since Deadpool was released in May 2018 while LOGAN was released in March 2017?
This was also the same time frame when Fox was about to be hought by Disney... but were there already plans by the then FOX people to conceptualize what they might see as another story in the Deadpool series?
