Earlier announced is the revival of SUNSET BOULEVARD in London, with Nicole Scherzinger.
And announced recently is the revival of SUNSET BOULEVARD in Australia with Sarah Brightman!
Who would be the better actress -- it is a highly dramatic role, as it was in the original Billy Wilder movie.
It also needs an excellent singer to deliver quite a few major songs ( including WITH ONE LOOK & AS IF WE NEVER SAID GOODBYE...THE PERFECT YEAR).
Who has the aura of the silent-movies actress now confronted by the modernization of cinema?
(Psst: Someone hinted on BWW that there is a filmed version of the original Australian production starring you-know-Hugh... but lips are sealed. I do have a not very clear unofficial copy of vocals for the show)
PS: This is my second favorite score by ALWebber...and of course, the original Billy Wilder movie is a cinematic celebration. I have seen the full-scale production in London, with Betty Buckley and with Elaine Paige.
But I wish Barbra Streisand did not insist on having creative control as director and star of the film adaptation. Rumors on the old Broadway.com ( which was replaced by BWW) in 2003 was that she wanted Hugh Jackman for Joe Gillis. Quite credible because she did that duet with Hugh years later... and Hugh had of course done the stage production in Australia.

This Lloyd Webber show had some starry original casting.
*Barbra was the first to record "With One Look" & "As If We Never Said Goodbye". People were speculating that ALWebber was planning a film adaptation with her as Norma.
*Patti Lupone was cast as the first Norma on stage in London...but we know how that story went. Famous quarrel when ALWebber decided that Glenn Close ( who originated it in LA) was a better choice for the staging on Broadway. Btw, at that time, it had the highest advance in Broadway history ($ 37 Million).
*Glenn Close did open the show on Bway. She is still trying to push its film adaptation but she may have aged up too much?
*Hugh Jackman opened the show as Joe Gillis in Australia...but the show was ill-fated partly due to problems associated with Debra Byrne ( who had a fabulous voice and acting skills as Norma
*BBC held a concert with Petula Clark as Norma & Michael Ball as Joe Gillis. Miichael originally sung the role at ALW's famous Sydmonton estate. He was expected to be Joe in London, with Patti, but it did not happen. Instead, ALW asked him to release the title song, ahead of the original cast recording.
Is this production forever bedevilled by issues? Too bad because it not only is based on Billy Wilder's best movie ( a perfect example of film noir) but also a great score by ALWebber.

My favorite song from the show ( and Hugh has said the same thing) --
Too Much In Love To Care! Sorry, audio only.

Can you imagine if ALWebber & Barbra S had been able to agree on a film adaptation, with Hugh as Barbra's choice as Joe Gillis. Joe was played by William Holden in an Oscar-nominated role. He had top billing over Gloria Swanson(Norma) because the story is told from the perspective of Joe.
Sunset Boulevard also marked a turning point in Hugh Jackman's early career ( this was his role after Beauty & The Beast). He was chosen as Joe by Trevor Nunn. Two years later, Trevor will cast Hugh Jackman in another role, as Curly in the Royal National Theatre revival of OKLAHOMA!, the musical that was seen by XMen producer LSDonner. The rest is history!
