I know none of you ever met her, but she lived with me since 1994 when she divorced my step-dad. She moved out of my house in Sept. 2022 to live in a Senior Living Facility, but my dear sweet mom passed away Dec. 14th. Her dementia which began in 2018 very slowly progressed to Alzheimer’s and I had to move her to Assisted Living, then to Memory Care Lockdown unit (she kept “eloping” as they called it )- she never went very far, just next door to either the nursing home or the senior living center, but they wouldn’t let her stay without a 24/7 companion that costs about $18,000 per month!! She had only been in Memory Care 5 days when she fell in the living area on Oct. 31st and broke her hip! It was downhill after that - she ended up in Rehab, but then back to the hospital with a urinary tract infection like she had last May - it makes older people go crazy and hallucinate, etc. She never made it back to Memory Care - they wouldn’t take her back because suddenly she was bedridden on about Dec. 11th. So the Rehab place (they were so nice) put her on a stretcher on the 13th and took her 50 feet next door to their Hospice & Palliative Care unit. (she had been refusing to eat or drink and would just spit out her meds that they would crush up in pudding or applesauce) She did get to see her 2nd great-granddaughter Zarah on Nov. 20th, who was born on Nov. 6th which was her 93rd birthday! She was alert then. On the 12th she did open her eyes to see her, my daughter Lauren and me. Then on the 13th, she opened her eyes to see my son Kevin and me. They called me at 10:40am on the 14th to say her breathing had slowed. Called everyone, but we didn’t make it there in time. As I was driving they called to say she was gone. 😢 She was the best mom anyone could ask for and everyone who met her loved her. She was cremated and we’ll be having a Celebration of Life service at McKendree Church on Jan. 6th. I have to put the finishing touches on her obituary, but you can see it on wagesandsons.com in the near future. Right now all they have up is the photo I sent. (Betty G. Nielsen)
