A related discussion elsewhere got me thinking "what's out there?" of Hugh's work Down Under... before most of us became aware of him.
1999 Erskineville Kings Wace 1999 Paperback Hero Jack Willis 1998 Halifax f.p: Afraid of the Dark (TV movie) Eric Ringer
*1997 Sunset Boulevard (Theatre) Joe Gillis Palace of Dreams (TV - "Making of" documentary, and a few Talk Show performance clips on YouTube) [What? No OCR???] 1996 Snowy River: The McGregor Saga (TV series) Duncan Jones – Black Sheep (1996) … Duncan Jones – Comeback (1996) … Duncan Jones – Prince of Hearts (1996) … Duncan Jones – The Grand Duke (1996) … Duncan Jones – The Grand Opening (1996) … Duncan Jones
1996 Beauty and The Beast (Theatre) Gaston (only the OCR - and a few YouTube clips) *1995 Blue Heelers (TV series) Brady Jackson – Just Desserts (1995) … Brady Jackson 1995 Correlli (TV series) (10 episodes ) Kevin Jones Rat Tamer (26 July 1995) - Kevin Jones Roman Holiday (2 August 1995) - Kevin Jones Shots in the Dark (9 August 1995) - Kevin Jones Solitary (16 August 1995) - Kevin Jones Lock-Down (23 August 1995) - Kevin Jones Spoons (30 August 1995) - Kevin Jones Wishin' and Hopin' (6 September 1995) - Kevin Jones An Early Release (13 September 1995) - Kevin Jones Revelations (20 September 1995) - Kevin Jones Rumours (27 September 1995) - Kevin Jones
*1994 Law of the Land (TV series) Charles 'Chicka' McCray – Win, Lose and Draw (1994) … Charles 'Chicka' McCray
...and there's an early, short-lived "News Mag" show he talked about co-hosting, and I'm sure he's appeared on many talk/interview shows, as well as those Christmas concerts where he sang. What else?
*I've never seen a legit/commercial release of these.

That was called IN FASHION, where he says he was the layman in anything about fashion He co-hosted that with Rove McManus, among others - which is why they seem to have been good mates ever since. Some other notable appearances -- *He co-hosted the opening of the FOX Studios in Sydney...and sang People Will Say We're In Love with original movie Laurey, Shirley Jones. *There were two excellent interviews with Andrew Denton - one with Hugh and one with Deb. *He sang a lot of notable songs in some of his hosting appearances -- Lily's Eyes (From Secret Garden) and a few Christmas songs. *Also, some great interviews on OZ TV when he was promoting THE BOY FROM OZ - ARENA TOUR. I really liked, despite its shaky VHS quality, his appearance on THE PANEL, an Australian talk show that predates his worldwide X-MEN fame.

I thought his performance in Erskineville Kings was truly amazing. It remains one of my favourite performances of his. He has turned in some great performances since, but that one will always be special to me.

Renner, you are so right, he was excellent in that film. From what I remember, his "Aussie" agent showed scenes from that movie to different casting directors in the US to show how well he can act. When they saw those scenes they decided they'd risk casting a very handsome AND talented unknown by the name of Hugh Jackman.
My best friend surprised me once with this DVD for Christmas because she knows I think his performance in this film was amazing. I have watched it several times. Even then you can see such dedication to his craft. He has grown so much in his talent over the years and it's been a pleasure watching it shine in films like The Fountain and The Prestige, etc..
But Erskineville Kings started it all........

Bragging rights here ;D
I saw ERSKINEVILLE KINGS on the big screen!
The local Australian Embassy here in Manila holds a yearly festival of Australian-made films. One year, the headline film ( because it won awards in Australia) was ERSKINEVILLE KINGS.
The cinema ( a big one here) was not too full -- but I was proud as punch to be there!

Jo! you lucky duck! It must have been a great experience for you ;D
Nevaeh - What a cool bestie!!
Funny enough - I have seen most episodes of Halifax, f.p. but I don't recall the one Hugh was in. Of course that was quite some time before I knew of his name and talent. I do recall the one that Deb was in, mostly because I thought she looked very similar to Amanda Redman.

On a featured article re his directing a new movie with John Cusack, there was mention of a previous directorial job (ERSKINEVILLE KINGS) by Alan White, with an accompanying photo of one of the leads --

From LAW OF THE LAND ( 1995?) --
Glimpses of Hugh -- I saw the only the first 10 minutes or so...and it's a long clip. Will come back to it when I have time.

Hard to believe that was 24 years ago and he was about 25! (It was from 1994) He has aged very well though! Did you notice during the fight in the beginning, he had the “Wolverine” look a couple times? Nancy

It is quite surprising that he could change from the look and acting persona in LAW OF THE LAND ( 1994-1995) to that in Correlli ( 1995-1996?) or even Beauty and the Beast ( 1996) or Sunset Boulevard ( 1997). I think in Correlli we already saw glimpses of how his acting persona will develop to today's Hugh Jackman.

The name of Hugh's classmate is Marty Denniss who was also known as Anik Chooney. He was not only the screenwriter but he also played the younger brother, Barky, of Hugh in the movie. www.imdb.com/title/tt0212936/According to Hugh in one of his many interviews, Marty Denniss did not finish his course at WAPPA. He was a very good writer but he was more of an independent spirit and WAAPA parted ways with him It was also Hugh who shared that it was first written as a play and then adapted as a screenplay for the movie. The movie won some artistic recognition especially for Hugh Jackman. Jo

I once was able to see the whole movie on youtube, but they have taken it down. Too bad; I wouldn't mind watching it once more. I have Erskineville Kings too, but is PAL disc. I also have it in VHS that I used to be able to play on my VCR that I had hacked to play other regions. Wish I could watch the DVD as it has a bunch of extras on it.

Well, my DVD looks totally different. The spine says Palace Films Special Edition. The special features are as follows: Audio Commentary, cast and crew biographies, photo gallery, theatrical trailer, deleted scene, audition montage featuring Hugh and 4 others, music video “So Wild” by The Craw. 😉

I must have gotten the original release - from a well-known Australian site ( I also used it for DVDs of other Australian shows, including other stage productions) but it was in Region 4 format. Maybe when they re-released it, the special features were then added as Hugh had already become a big star then? Lucky you Jo

According to the Festival Programme Notes, Erskineville Kings is celebrating its 20th year of release! www.londonaustfilm.com/festivalThat was also how I had a chance to see ERSKINEVILLE KINGS on the big screen - through an Australian Film Festival sponsored by the Australian Embassy here.
