Thank you for posting these old links. I had not seen the CBS interview or the Variety review of the Australian show.

So nice to look back at so many memories of TBFO. I have a few playlists devoted to it so it will be fun to revisit them to celebrate the 10 year anniversary. Interesting that the Variety piece talked about bringing the show back to Broadway. Was that seriously considered in 2006? Sue

LOL - I meant to show the 2003 Variety review, but ended up with link to the arena show. I do have practically all the reviews then ( Dire and dismal and terrible in general! Except for the singular praise for the talent and energy of Hugh Jackman!) but it is hard to find the online links anymore. There was one which I wanted so hard to find ( the review by Rex Reed which was quoted in the lobby of the Imperial because it was a true rave- a rarity!) but could not find it.
Sue -
Hugh had talked about bringing it back for a limited time, but at the Radio City Music Hall. I think the successful experience with arena shows indicated that there would be appeal for a staging that was a little more oriented towards a concert ( like the arena shows), so it was considered. But it did not happen...
2006 was a busy year for Hugh, film-wise! The following films were shown during that period --
*Happy Feet *XMen:The Last Stand *Scoop *The Fountain *Flushed Away *The Prestige
I think three were actually released in November of that year. I can't remember what followed, career-wise, which could have made him decide against the Radio City Music Hall production.
Maybe it was the pre-production for AUSTRALIA ( he was not supposed to be the lead, but Russell Crowe left the production, leading to Hugh taking the role of The Drover) -- which was late 2006, the actual filming which started in March of 2007 and which took something like 7 months-or-so, followed immediately by the filming of XMEN Origins: Wolverine in late 2007 up to June 2008. Then a prolonged sabbatical, until promotions for AUSTRALIA and then the preparation for the 2009 Oscars hosting.

Thanks for the history lesson, Jo. As a latecomer to Hugh fan-dom, I am always trying to piece together and "relive" the earlier parts of his career through old articles and interviews and the recollections of his fans. So I like your happy mistake in posting the Australia show review here since it filled in some gaps for me.

You're welcome, Suefb There used to be an official forum for TBFO, which preceded our current forum. Too bad we lost a lot of the archives from that forum - not just reviews but show reports from fans who fell in love with the show. Also, a lot of stagedoor stories with Hugh -- in a sense, he was much more accessible then...although the stagedoor was already fairly crowded. On the closing show, there must have been a thousand of us at that stagedoor to say good bye to Hugh. Btw, the Imperial holds around 1400 seats. Jo

Thanks, Jamie -- but that was Rex Reed's review for BACK ON BROADWAY in 2011.
I meant the TBFO review in 2003. If I remember correctly, the Imperial quoted some of his review and plastered them at the lobby of the Imperial.

But probably the most thrilling words of praise came from Oscar-winning screenwriter and theatre pundit William Goldman, in his column for Variety that is not even a review of the show. It is an article re "Screen Trade: Standout perfs for a young decade"--
He projects Keira Knightley for female star... but continues --
To me, to put Hugh on par with Brando and Merman, theatrical legends in their most revered roles, is praise indeed! Also, his projection that he might be the star of the decade for movies and theatre - that seems to be coming to fruition now that we are in 2013!

Wonderful comments, thanks. While I'm sad that I did not get to experience TBFO in person, I can't have too many regrets. I have to realize I was living my own life at the time, taking care of two preschoolers. So now here I am, and I can only read these types of descriptions and watch the press reels and listen to the CD over and over and imagine how it was. And of course, as of last Saturday, I've now seen him live, so that is a nice consolation.

TBFO was my first trip back to my Home Town in almost 20 years. I was staying on the next street (46th?) and loved the spectacle of all the photos on the Imperial's back doors each time I walked out of my hotel. I'll miss the "vintage" marquee, but I know times must change and I'm sure the new fangled version will be more energy efficient, etc.
...I don't really care about the technology, I just want to see Hugh's name up in lights again - soon!

Happily, judging from a recent photo, I think they're leaving the facade alone---just putting the new electronic piece above it, where the image of Hugh in his white outfit against the red background is in the photo above. Not as bad as I'd feared. http://instagram.com/p/jAepsaHseg # Ellen

If they had to put that TELECHARGE info, I wish they had not added any image with it. Or they could have just left the LES MISERABLES on its own fully occupying the electronic marquee!
