I like how he sounds like a pirate, crediting the name "Keller Dover"--with all those R's--with helping him pronounce the American hard "R."
Looks like a very intense, well-crafted movie.

There was another clip - 5'29", but unfortunately it was no longer available right after I had seen it twice. It featured interviews with Hugh and Jake and some set scenes ( including one of Hugh and Terence putting up the additional leaf to the dining table, only for occasions like Thanksgiving - while their two children, who will become the subject of the hunt, looked on). The female interviewer seemed a little smitten with Hugh ( calling him "the perfect male specimen", to Hugh's somewhat discomfort - LOL!). Jake was wearing a buttoned up shirt, which didn't seem to be my idea of a local detective's uniform/getup ...but more importantly, he praised Hugh's focus when they need to start acting! PS: Hugh likes the name "Keller" Jo That's the one that should have posted! I'm not sure what happened. Sorry, Sue! I'm glad someone put it on YouTube, though. Easier to keep track of that way. - Alicia

Lol - my American dorm roommate who came from the suburbs of Boston ( same locale as the story setting for PRISONERS) used to make me giggle a little as she would not pronounce the "r" when it was there ( "hoss" instead of "horse") and added an "r" when there was none ("chiner" instead of china)...But the funny thing was when the late Ted Kennedy was on campus for a speech -- he did the same thing and called 'Cuba", "Cuber"..."China, "Chiner"...and "guerilla", "gueriller" And btw, the first thing that my dormmates asked me to say when I first joined the dorm was " Park your car in Harvard Yard", like they do -LOL! So, I wonder how "Keller Dover's" name would have been pronounced by people from around Boston Jo

Kella Dova. Ellen Kella Dova sounds very Aussie to me ! It's very rare to hear Hugh roll his Rs except when he's in character, unlike many other expat Australian actors who slip in and out of American accents during interviews. Deb also has a tendency to roll her Rs and sound American even when she's back home.

I think the forum must be going a little squirrelly with the updates. Here and on the photos thread, people have said they can't see pictures. I can see them, but everyone's avatar photos have disappeared for me. They'll probably pop up and disappear over the next month.

Class photo ;D PRISONERS - circa 2013! It is easy enough to spot Hugh - but is that old friend (from Kate and Leopold) Viola Davis he is next to? Jo

She looks rather young and to my eyes (which have "seen" better days) doesn't resemble Davis at all. Could that be Jane Aronson and an adoptee next to Hugh?

PRISONERS is another film story where the character of Hugh will likely be interacting with kids ( his own and his best friends').
I thought it is quite extraordinary that Hugh has been very successful in portraying relationships with children in the roles he has played --
*His younger alter ego, young Peter, in The Boy from Oz -- up to the end, their tete-a-tetes mirrored their shared ambitions and their extraordinary joy of performing. What a delight to watch them together!
*His relationship with his daughter in Swordfish made many of us a bit sniffish in their scenes together, expecially in that scene when they end their ride to her home.
*The buildup in the relationship of the estranged father and son and their road to triumph and recognition of love between them made us love the film Real Steel
*Then of course his being Dear Papa to young and grown-up Cosette in Les Miserables is the role which gave greater emphasis on the love of father and child. Suddenly is a highlight of such an awakening...and the finale when he says his goodbye left us all teary-eyed.
He portays the role of a father with such sympathy, without being cloying...and it is probably not just from being a good dramatic actor but also because he lends to his own role some of his own fatherly feelings.
Will we see some strong scenes between father and daughter, too, in Prisoners? He also has a teenaged son in the film -- will there also be some important scenes with him?

[red] POSSIBLE SPOILERS[/red] This is being discussed a bit on another thread but I just re-read the Prisoners script yesterday, so I thought I'd bring it back here. I don't think this will be considered an action movie. It's much more of a suspense thriller and a character driven story as opposed to action driven. I had forgotten how intense the character of Keller Dover is. He is not likeable through most of the story. Even though we may understand his motivation, his actions are not for the squeamish. I think there are only a couple of scenes where he may have a chance to show a more human side but it's only going to be about 10 minutes or less of screen time so everyone should be prepared for a less than likable character throughout. Also the character of Loki seems quite complex and I'm interested to see what Jake does with that. I had also forgotten how evil the Aunt is, so Melissa Leo could potentially be quite chilling in that role. The character of Nancy Birch (nice name) is also a very good, strong woman type role perfect for Viola Davis. I notice that Len Cariou is playing a suspect/priest which should also be very interesting. I enjoy him in the show Blue Bloods. Some may not know who he is but he's a fine character actor who you may recognize from various movie & TV roles once you see him. There will be a couple of more action type scenes involving at least one speeding car crashing into things type of action and scenes with scuffling between characters similar to what we saw in the ET piece with angry Keller. But I think it will mostly have suspenseful scenes driven by character development. I think Hugh and Jake will be true Co-Stars and both of those characters will have equal weight in the story. I was wondering as I read the script if they are going to add or enhance some of the scenes. As it is now, it seems quite short...less than 2 hours. But I guess people's attention spans aren't what they used to be so maybe it will stand. It is certainly taught writing and well developed for under 2 hours anyway. I actually like action movies when they are well done and when they are more character driven. That's probably why I like the X-Men/Wolverine movies. I'm very much looking forward to the new one because it seems to be very character driven. I was discussing this with someone recently...after I saw the newest trailers for the new Star Trek and the Man Of Steel, I said I was not that interested in seeing ST because it looks like it's going to be mostly special effects type of action. On the other hand, MOS looks to be much more character driven so I'm looking forward to seeing that in the theater. That's probably why I liked only the first Batman movie in the new trilogy too. Valerie, perhaps we could have a separate topic such as "Movie Projects-Hugh & Others-speculation, opinion etc." Since we seem to talk about things like that on various threads...Unbound Captives and some of the endless list of summer blockbusters which are Hugh's competition for example. If a thread is speculating on a potential movie for Hugh, it could get it's own thread once it's officially green lit of course. Just an idea. Edit: Or maybe we could call it something as simple as "Other Movie Conversations" Okay, I have probably rambled enough for now! Sue

I will always think of Len Cariou as Benjamin Barker, better known as Sweeney, in the original production of Sondheim's SWEENEY TODD. Melissa Leo can be very chilling indeed--remember how she orchestrated the beating up of Jennifer Lawrence in WINTER'S BONE? That was frightening.
All the talk of PRISONERS' being an awards-worthy project is making me even more anxious to see Hugh once again show the naysayers that he's much more than a mutant with claws or even a song-and-dance man.

Ellen I forgot that was ML in Winter's Bone. What an amazing/dark movie. Jennifer Lawrence is someone with a big future. I've been very impressed with everything I've seen her in. Didn't know about Sweeney Todd, though I did know he had done theater. As for Hugh and Prisoners...it's the kind of role that good actors really like to sink their teeth into. Getting out of their comfort zones and exploring the dark side. For someone like Hugh it's an even bigger stretch. We saw a glimpse in The Prestige but this is much darker. If he pulls it off I don't see how he could be ignored for a nomination...but we will have to wait and see. Sue

SPOILER ALERT!!SPOILER ALERT!!SPOILER ALERT!!In Prisoners, the character of Keller Dover became a vigilante because of what happened to his daughter. In the process, he showed an unusually cruel and almost inhuman streak to get the truth out of his suspected kidnapper. Towards the end, he was no longer thinking straight and his values have been overriden by the desire for retribution. In The Prestige, the overweening ego of Robert Angier drove him on even early in his career ( quite apart from the death of his wife) to seek public adulation for his accomplishments. His set of values worked only for his self-aggrandizement - including even using/prostituting his woman to solicit secrets from his rival. It is a good thing that Chris and Jonathan Nolan decided to rewrite the story from the original book, because I found the last chapters in the book by Christopher Priest almost unbearable to read - too weird. Angier's obssession in the movie was pushed by his desire to be known as the Best in his profession. The very dark side of the joy of performing I think the darkest character Hugh has played is that of Wace in Deception. The man was evil and very manipulative from the start. He was almost slimy in his depiction of the ostensibly man-of-the-world out to help out a shy accountant. He had his motives and they were all selfish and arrogant. One scene which made me think that Hugh could portray dark depths is the scene when he forces himself on Michelle Williams. I don't think anyone shed tears when he died from her vengeful act. In A Steady Rain, he was an alpha male rogue cop - but one can be almost sympathetic to the fate he suffered even if his values were not all straightforward. He seemed more like a normal person, faults and all. And he did redeem himself at the end, although some may find the suicide route was a selfish way out and not a selfless way to leave his family to better times. Hugh is turning out quite a variety of intriguing characterizations...and I think the next 5-10 years will see him pick up many interesting roles. I wonder if he will seek some very dramatic role in the theatre at some point? Jo

Hugh seems to shine better in movies/plays where it is a male two-hander storyline Which one did you prefer -- *Les Miserables ( with Crowe) *The Prestige ( with Bale) *Deception ( with MacGregor) *A Steady Rain ( with Craig) *XMEN Origins: Wolverine ( with Schreiber) *Real Steel ( with Goyo ) I wonder how the chemistry with Jake Gyllenhaal in Prisoners will work out? A podcast from a film site re the CinemaCon ( theatre exhibitors convention where studios present their year's slate in general) re the Warner Brothers 2013 slate. www.modernmythmedia.com/2013/04/mmm-podcast-118-superman-blows-away-cinemacon/Check out at 31'51" for comments on PRISONERS! Very promising and noteworthy of Hugh's exceptionally strong performance based on one scene. One of the commentators even forecast the prospect of a possible Oscar nod, if the dramatic performance by Hugh shown on the brief clip were a good harbinger of his entire portrayal. Jo

Jo, Yes Wyatt in Deception was a slimy character indeed. Wace was in Erkineville Kings and a bit on the dark side too. Although he has played several dark roles I think this one will take him to places he hasn't been. That's always exciting for an actor.
I didn't include A Steady Rain since, relatively speaking, not that many people saw it. The Prestige is still getting reviews on YouTube and mentions on message boards and in article comments. I don't think it was promoted as well as it should have been when it came out. That may have more to do with the untimely death of Heath Ledger than anything else, but it seems to have acquired a nice following in it's BluRay/DVD afterlife. Dark, complex characters do sell tickets as well as discs it seems.
I think Prisoners will shock and surprise a lot of people. I'm not at all familiar with the directors previous work but the actors seem to have confidence in him. I would think there would be a trailer coming out soon. I'm anxious to see what the focus of the trailers might be. I would think...peaceful family gathering, shattered by tragedy, some scenes like the one we saw on ET with comments about a crazed father looking for justice, the detective going out of his way to solve the crime, a peek at the pathetic suspect and glimpses of the other characters. I don't think they will give too much away in the trailers. Sue
