How sad to hear. I know I was not the only one who developed a major crush on John Kerr after seeing him as Lt. Cable in the film version of South Pacific.

Oh, my--you and I both, Carol. When I was a budding adolescent, my friend and I went to see a re-release of SOUTH PACIFIC (in a double header with THE MUSIC MAN--what a long but great afternoon that was!), and we both developed crushes on John Kerr. At the time I didn't know he was dubbed by Bill Lee (who also dubbed Christopher Plummer in THE SOUND OF MUSIC), but even so, we wouldn't have cared. We just thought he was the most appealing thing on two legs. Having seen THE WORLD OF HENRY ORIENT together, my friend and I decided to make up our own Secret Society dedicated to Kerr. We loved his vulnerability and soft eyes as well as his prodigious acting talent and made sure to catch his every movie on TV. We even made sure to watch his so-so ARREST AND TRIAL TV series. Some years later I was thrilled to see him on Broadway in THE TENTH MAN (Jo, I know you saw this, too!), but somehow I never got his autograph. My favorites of his films: SOUTH PACIFIC (of course), GABY (a remake of the weeper WATERLOO BRIDGE), TEA AND SYMPATHY (in which he re-created his Broadway success) and THE COBWEB. Rest in peace, Honk--that was my friend's and my secret nickname for him. I have to chuckle at this remembrance: at the time, we thought his name was pronounced like "car" (hence, the car horn "honk"); we didn't realize he pronounced it like "cur." Oh, to be a kid again.

Found this photo from ATC -- Mitzi Gaynor and John Kerr, circa 2010 : Mitzi still looks sprightly and looks like she can still sing " I'm Gonna Wash That Man Outta My Hair" and John is looking very dignified - just as Lt. Joseph Cable would have looked like had he not lost his life early. Thanks for the memories, guys! Jo
