LOL -- in London, they refer to it as Michael's overdone "vibrato" That is why I get confused But that particular song " The Red and the Black" is the song where I fell in love with Michael's voice, the first time I heard it on the original London cast recording. Jo ( no music expert )

Sue, When I had seen that Darren Criss clip, referred to on a tweet, I looked him up on Wikipedia ( I do know him from GLEE, but nothing on his personal background). *I was curious about his comment on having seen OKLAHOMA! and then saying that he could not quite believe that the same performer would become Wolverine. Darren is only 26 -- so he must have seen the Oklahoma! DVD, which he was referring to ( released 10 years ago in the USA, and much earlier in the UK), at which age, he must have been also a fan of comicbook heroes? *I had forgotten that he had performed briefly on Broadway, as the replacement of Daniel Radcliffe in How To Succed in Business ( in an exhausting role too, as a triple threat) so he does have the cred to speak very sincerely about his respect for Hugh! *Lastly, I did not know that his mother is a Filipina ... but I have not heard that he has visited here. PS: Didn't he do a version of The Boy Next Door in GLEE not so long ago? Thanks. Jo That's funny, I looked him up on IMDB to see his birthday when I heard him mention Oklahoma! He would have been only 10 or 11. It said he lived in Italy for a while too but it didn't say when. I suppose it is possible that his parents took him on a trip to London. He seems to have had a very eclectic childhood and made his professional stage debut at age 10. I was surprised when he mentioned seeing Oklahoma! I also thought he must have only seen the PBS version, but he also could have seen the earlier production that was broadcast in Europe. It was the reason they made the film version in the first place. I think it was in '99 or 2000 and for Sky TV or something like that...I'd have to look it up. Anyway, good for him to use Hugh for a role model, can't go wrong there! PS: I think it was the other boy (forgot his name) who did The Boy From Oz bit on Glee. I think there was a YouTube video but I didn't save it...not a big Glee fan, though I've seen a few of them. Sue

You're right, Sue - it was another character from GLEE who sang The Boy Next Door, but I also cannot remember his name. Darren went to Italy only in 2008 ( Oklahoma! opened in London in 1998), according to the Wikipedia notes -- but the family did live in Hawaii for a time, when his father headed a new bank. The filmed version of Oklahoma! took a long time to get going, although it was Nunn's intention to do it before it transfered from the RNT theatre at the South Bank to the Lyceum theatre ( that was where I saw it onstage). They were lucky and it was during the break (end of 1998) between stagings that they were able to film it, but only after they were able to secure the financing. It cost them $ 4 million to film it, in terms of 1998 dollars, even if it was simply a recreation of the stage production, sets included. But even luckier was when the DVD-Region 1 for US audiences was released to coincide with the opening of TBFO. It introduced Hugh to a wider audience as someone who was not just Wolverine

Hugh sang both Carousel & Music Man songs - same patter he has done before each song. Both were marvelous. He really was in exceptional voice. Can't pick a favorite song, but WHO AM I was unbelievable. More impressive than the movie version. Sung with such heart.
The gal who spent $30,000 in the auction was the person who called out "We love you Deb!" Actually she & her friend called out. They also each had a bunch of glow sticks tied together which Hugh noticed. I was sitting by them main floor towards the back.
Curious to see if any entertainment shows comment about the performance tonight (ET, Insider, Access Hollywood).

A concert version or a stage version of "Who Am I" will always be the more spectactular one. The version sung for the movie is meant to enhance the underpinnings of the scene - a morally conflicted man facing the real test of his full redemption. The big screen will also show the full gamut of facial expressions, the body language, and the vocal ability to go with the acting interpretation. But of course we love both Hugh's interpretations - which really proves his immense ability to tackle a challenge ( acting or acting/singing or singing) for whatever the occasion calls for. Was his version the same as the WHO AM I sung when he joined the Philadelphia Orchestra concert early this year? I just reviewed that clip ( bad visual but near-perfect audio)? Thanks for all the comments shared with us Jo

Ellen -- Thanks for filling in what had only been hinted at in some of the media reports and social network tweets I think the changes reflected ( fittingly) the change in venue for such a show. I gather there is a bit more intimacy on the Broadway incarnation and there were shared memories ( like the Peter Allen part, after the yearlong TBFO on Broadway)...while the people who came to see it at the Dolby were probably more of a film industry or film audiences crowd and are not as bound as the audiences at TBFO had become. In a sense, it was comparable to the revised TBFO playing before arena crowds in Australia compared to what the Imperial audiences saw. And maybe it was less musical theatre-ish and more like Hollywood fun in musicals? Hugh had tailored it more to who he was playing it to Re the Hollywood musicals medley -- did he do the whole range of oldtime musicals ( including I Got Rhythm, etc.)? How was the Soliloquy from Carousel received? What about the Rock Island audition from The Music Man? I liked that a lot, as it showed how versatile Hugh is. He does have a fondness for Mack the Knife ( which he also sang at Whitesell's wedding). Was his agent there and did he get a shoutout? Re the planned CD after TBFO - I wasn't too sure of the choice of songs then ( can't remember the rest now, apart from Smile)...but hopefully, in the future, there will be one -- now that his taste and experience in performing them has broadened. Did he also sing One Night Only and the Medley? Wish I had been there, too --envious, envious, envious But thanks again - you always share the memories so well and so generously smiley-signs101 Jo Yes, Jo, Hugh did the movie musical medley in full. Still my favorite part of the show. "Soliloquy" got a rousing reception; a shame the curtain comes down so quickly at its finish. He did the "Rock Island"/MUSIC MAN bit. I liked seeing the delighted reaction from industry people who were seeing Hugh's show likely for the first time. Whitesell was not able to attend, about which Hugh made numerous jokes about his loyalty. But Whitesell's wife and her mother were there. I was reminded that after the good-natured ribbing between the two, Marx said something about Hugh's being so awesome at everything was "[effing] annoying." Loved that! Ellen

Ellen,
Thanks so much for allowing us to enjoy Hugh's performance vicariously through your description of the evening's events. It must have been such a thrill to be in the audience.
I was thinking that it's a good thing Hugh didn't decide to "become" Peter. After two Wolverine films, he'd be way too bulked up to fit into any of the existing PA outfits without ripping out the seams!

I really enjoyed the show and was thrilled to be in the Dolby Theater! I think Ellen pretty much described the whole show. One of my favorite parts was Hugh singing "Who Am I?" which we know will be a regular part of his repertoire now.
It was great to see all the Ozalots gather again for a Hugh event! So much fun!
Jo, "Not the Boy Next Door" was performed on Glee by Chris Colfer, not Darren Criss.
BTW, Jo, in the photo you posted of Hugh and Deb during the show, when he just sang The Way You Look Tonight to her, notice the guy sitting to the right of Hugh who's a little bit in the shadow. Does he look familiar? Hint: He's an Honorary Ozalot! LOL! Ellen, I think you'll recognize him!

I know it's hard to see him because he's partially in shadow, but a couple of people pointed out to us that it's my hubby, Sam, an Honorary Ozalot! A Hugh fan in his own right!

You know, from that angle, I think so. We had turned around in our seats when Hugh came over to Deb, who was sitting on the aisle behind us. Michele was sitting on Sam's other side, and Ellen was in front of us.

A 5-star review of the show www.examiner.com/review/6-hues-of-hugh-jackmanAs Ellen noted in her account, it seems that the crowd who were probably mostly unfamiliar with Hugh's entertainer talents seemed very pleased with what they saw. Aha - more people to add to the fanbase Lol - if he ever makes it to HOUDINI, I shudder now at the fight for tickets smiley-excited001 Jo

Cheryl, thanks for pointing out Sam and yourself (well, part of your neck, LOL) in the shadows! I hadn't noticed! How nifty to see you both as backdrop while Hugh and Deb were having their big moment together. He always looks so happy and she so proud when they do that adorable coda to "The Way You Look Tonight."
And big thanks for your generosity and good company during this amazing trip!
