It seems Hugh Jackman has had plenty of time for side gigs these days, stepping out to shill for his Laughing Man coffee and now, taking all his clothes off for another brand.

In a new ad for R.M. Williams, he wears nothing but a pair of the Australian retailer’s high-end boots (known for their hand-crafted, single-piece leather upper construction). That’s because it’s stipulated in his contract to endorse the company—a rule he obviously takes a little too seriously, to the discomfort of the company's attorney.

The ad is the latest from Maximum Effort, the agency founded by Jackman's buddy, Ryan Reynolds.

To address its debut, or rather “leak,” R.M. Williams put out a press release saying that the video was of a “private meeting” between Jackman, who happens to be the brand’s global boot ambassador, and one of its execs, noting “we are very proud of our association with this truly undeniable character,” but “to be clear, R.M. Williams encourages all people—including Hugh Jackman—to wear clothes.”

It also assured that after the meeting, the company immediately contacted Jackman’s counsel to “make sure they explain our ‘only R.M. Williams boots’ contractual stipulation did not apply to other vestments. We are happy to report that Hugh seems to have gone back to wearing clothes, in addition with his R.M.Williams boots.”

To address any COVID production concerns, the company also noted that the meeting in the video had taken place in February and “Hugh and R.M. Williams now encourage those appearing in public to wear masks as well.”

Ryan Reynolds isn't the only one with a penchant for humorous advertisements as his frenemy Hugh Jackman is definitely no slouch in that department. The X-MEN actor happens to be the Global Boot Ambassador for R.M. Williams, an Australian company known for their "beautiful and purposefully designed footwear" that is "built using 80 hand-crafted processes to deliver superior comfort." A new commercial for R.M. Williams has been released which shows that Jackman loves his R.M. Williams boots so much that he doesn't feel the need to wear anything else. You can check out more of Hugh Jackman than you've likely seen before above.

To be clear, R.M.Williams encourages all people - including Hugh Jackman - to wear clothes. Clothes have many amazing benefits from making the wearer look stylish to making meetings way less awkward. The R.M. Williams commercial was created in collaboration with Hugh Jackman and the folks at Maximum Effort, with R.M.Williams Chief Marketing Officer Mat Hayward saying, "2020 has been an uncomfortable year and we’re hopeful that in addition to highlighting the comfort and spirit of R.M.Williams boots, our latest brand effort will bring a uniquely Hugh Jackman bit of laughter and joy." Of course, Ryan Reynolds couldn't let the ad slide without his own comment, as he took to Twitter to say, "Is that the chair from my office?"

Hugh Jackman will next be seen starring alongside Rebecca Ferguson in REMINISCENCE, a sci-fi thriller written and directed by Westworld co-creator Lisa Joy. Jackman will play Nick Bannister, a private-eye who deals in "recapturing vivid cherished memories for clients," while Ferguson plays Mae, one of his clients whose seemingly simple request sets Nick off on a quest to reveal this woman's past. The film is slated to be released on April 16, 2021.

Ryan has posted ad on his YOUTUBE channel with the title "Maximum Jackman" - ahem.  With his followers it has racked up close to 700,000 views today and is a "trending video" as of now.  I'm sure no one will object to another viewing here..

Lol - not many realize that the ad was created and produced by MAXIMUM EFFORT - an outfit owned or partially owned by Ryan Reynolds

I am hoping that in all this collaboration ( maybe the last 2 funny ads - the first one was Hugh tipping the contents of Aviation Gin on the table; the ignore-Dali before coffee one were also its creations) --

that Hugh and Ryan will eventually work on another film project together (Deadpool ended up decapitated in the last one...while Wolverine lost his memory).

Could be comedy or action or action with comedy...or anything, as this has been consistent demand by fans for sometime now

The cheeky R.M. Williams video clip showing actor High Jackman naked except for his boots works on many levels.

Luma Research, which has conducted a lot of studies to understand the role of celebrities in advertising, says Jackman can’t help but get noticed.

“Seeing a naked Hugh Jackman is enough to stop most people in their tracks,” says Georgia Phillips, COO Luma Research.

“Our data shows that it is women we are most impacted by the use of celebrities – men are not as interested.”



Luxury brands were quick to work this out years ago. Using an aspirational celebrity can, by association, help to strengthen feelings about a brand.

Phillips says the celebrity’s qualities and attributes can help to strengthen a brand’s perceptions implicitly. If people admire the celebrity, some of this love will pass to the brand.

The spoof video clip shows Jackman naked, except for his boots, in a meeting with senior executives at R.M.Williams.

A “statement” from R.M. Williams: “To be clear, R.M. Williams encourages all people - including Hugh Jackman - to wear clothes. Clothes have many amazing benefits from making the wearer look stylish to making meetings way less awkward.”


The video was created in concert with Hugh Jackman and the marketeers at Maximum Effort.


R.M.Williams CMO Mat Hayward says: “2020 has been an uncomfortable year and we’re hopeful that in addition to highlighting the comfort and spirit of R.M.Williams boots, our latest brand effort will bring a uniquely Hugh Jackman bit of laughter and joy.”

Phillips at Luma Research says people are really engaged by the creative and they especially love the humour.

“The more Hugh makes us laugh, the more we like him and the R.M. Williams brand,” she says.

A survey by Luma Research found almost half (48%) say they would talk about the Jackman clip with friends and families (compared to 30% norm).

Other findings:

78% surveyed recognised Hugh (even without his clothes)
88% of people like Hugh
And 93% feel he is a good fit with R.M. Williams


How much does it cost to have Hugh in an ad?



“After a little digging I found out that Hugh has been the brand ambassador for R.M. Williams since 2019 and he is also a significant private investor in the business (a 5% stake),” says Phillips.

“And, it gets better, R.M. Williams has been up for sale since April 2019 with an asking price of $500 million.

“At that price, sale of the business would deliver Jackman $25 million for his share. So, the ad is a really clever ad, not just to sell shoes, but to sell the entire business. That is quite an investment – but money well spent.”

Tattarang has bought 100 per cent of the business, buying out minority shareholders such as Jackman, who owned about 5 per cent of the business and will receive about $10 million from the sale. Jackman will remain an ambassador for the brand, as he has been since 2015.
