Deadline Hollywood is reporting that negotiations have started with James Mangold and Hugh for a new Wolverine movie. Is this a good thing?

emoticon-cartoon-020 Yay Here's the report from DEADLINE HOLLYWOOD -- www.deadline.com/2013/11/james-mangold-hugh-jackman-sinking-claws-into-another-the-wolverine-film/#utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=twitterI had a feeling that as soon as THE WOLVERINE crossed over $ 400 million worldwide, and having tested the China waters, that this was going to be a real possibility. On the SuperheroHype board, they had already started speculating about possible storylines, as soon as the China results started coming in. At the moment, it is Fox's major franchise and it seems that the series has successfully branched out as a team-movie as well as a spinoff movie. With the reorganization of the marketing unit at FOX, and distribution being the forte of Chairman/CEO Jim Gianopulos, we can probably expect a much improved marketing/promotion strategy now. Maybe the next storyline would be a lighter take and dwell on his adventures...like a road movie. Lol - why ever not Being involved in a Wolverine project does not mean that Hugh is taking himself out from dramatic movies or even other action movies... or even musicals. Nor does it mean that he is forgetting the stage. I think he is happiest with his career when he can handle different challenges. Yay emoticon-cartoon-020 Jo

Deadline Hollywood is reporting that negotiations have started with James Mangold and Hugh for a new Wolverine movie. Is this a good thing? Unless they are planning this as potentially for a few years from now, I'd have to say no. In the next 3+ years I'd love to see him do some new things, especially films from great scripts! I'd also love to see the Barnum project get a green light and for Unbound Captives to finally get out of limbo. At this point, I don't care who directs it as long as it gets made. For a long time I was in Madeleine Stowe's corner and admired her for sticking to her guns (so to speak) but it doesn't look like the old boys club is going to budge on her directing it so maybe it's time she shopped it around to other directors. True, Sue. Speaking of Mangold (above), he did a pretty good job with his remake of 3:10 TO YUMA, so he'd be a good bet for a western, which THE WOLVERINE sort of was anyway. Re the proposed Wolverine tale, Mangold is only beginning negotiations and still has to write the treatment, which would mean that film is likely several years down the road. If Hugh accepts, I'm presuming it's the farewell story of Old Man Logan, which would nicely cap off that character's long journey. Until then, I'm hoping Hugh will fill his dance card with quality films and stage vehicles.

Maybe in ten years or so he could do a James Bond/Sean Connery type "Never Say Never", but definitely NOT NOT NOT anytime in the next several years. Now is the time and age for him to put all the great films notched on his belt and line his shelves with the awards. Anytime soon and it would just look like money grubbing. His reputation as an actor is more important than a single role would ever be.

The Hollywood Reporter confirms that the new direction at FOX coincides with this announcement of another movie in its most successful franchise. www.hollywoodreporter.com/heat-vision/wolverine-sequel-works-james-mangold-653337In the last few years, FOX artistic choices and marketing forte have been tested severely - this year they have the distinction of having had the two lowest opening weekends for a major movie. The company has been going through a major reorganization phase ( which also resulted in Tom Rothman being let go as one of the two co-CEOs), with Jim Gianopulos now actively at the helm. One of the strong moves recently was the investment in DAYS OF FUTURE PAST, which would bring back two strong and appealing casts( Oscar winners and Oscar nominees - I doubt that you could find a more talented cast in a superhero movie), helmed by the original creator of the serious comicbook movie genre, and allowed a rumored budget of $ 250 million! It was also repositioned for a Memorial Day weekend, giving the film its best spot for an early summer film release. Given the successful worldwide performance of THE WOLVERINE, including an excellent re-entry into the Chinese market, and a relatively successful domestic market performance ( despite the negativity of ORIGINS), as well as the surprising good reviews garnered by Mangold and Jackman, it seems a very good move on the part of Fox to explore another film opportunity for the saga of Wolverine ( who is successful even in cameo roles). This new repositioning by Fox will continue to allow it to support movies like James Cameron's projects ( he is now developing AVATAR 2 and 3, if I am not mistaken) and other genres which, given the kind of movies that paying audiences now favor, is now a hard choice for big studios to lay their hands on. Given that FOX has given Hugh the anchor to his successful career, I would look at this as a quid-pro-quo commitment from him. Who knows what other commitments may have been given by each side? I have a feeling that one of these is the greenlighting of GREATEST SHOWMAN ON EARTH, a personal project of Hugh Jackman. Maybe it could be produced by the mother studio itself or placed under the auspices of its subsidiary, the highly successful Fox Searchlight ( which, ironically, was the brainchild of Tom Rothman), whose Oscar bid this year will be 12 YEARS A SLAVE! In the last 12 months we have seen Hugh show the world his amazing versatility and commitment as an actor ( Les Miserables, The Wolverine, Prisoners) - all successful movies in very different genres. If the cornerstone of Hugh's career is his commitment to this kind of versatility, I am happy to be part of his fanbase. He is as much a beloved movie star not just to the American market but to the whole wide world as well -- take a look at the foreign demos for his movies! I used to look at his XMEN commitments as part of the " necessary evil" in his career ...Not anymore, I have learned to enjoy them ( as I have always been a fan of the action movie genre - I was an original " Bond girl") and I have also looked at his longterm involvement in the franchise as the portal to new artistic challenges! Because of OKLAHOMA!, he eventually landed the role in the XMEN franchise. Because of his fame as Wolverine, Broadway was willing to accept this unknown Australian jukebox musical in its arms and, in the process, found a new stage superstar. Because of THE BOY FROM OZ, it led to THE FOUNTAIN and LES MISERABLES...and even A STEADY RAIN ( a role not unlike that of Keller Dover). Because Hollywood has now changed completely from the years of the great actors and great stories, a movie like PRISONERS has found its footing because the world-famous Hugh Jackman opened the movie and allowed critics and fans a look-see. PRISONERS, while a true critic- and crowd-pleaser achieved only moderately successful box office results ( slightly over $ 108 million worldwide for its 6-week run, with the domestic/American market edging out the overseas market results) - hence, Hollywood will not always favor dramatic fare all the time. If Hugh is professionally and personally fulfilled and happy with the trajectory of his career, I am happy to go along with that. Jo

I didn't want to start a new thread, so I'm sharing this photo here - - (I think there's close to ten years difference - is that possible?) Personally, I find *Hugh* more attractive with LESS muscles.

The first XMEN movie was filmed towards the end of 1999. The Wolverine was shot in 2012 ( after the filming of Les Miserables).

Jo, isn't "ya filthy animal" a reference to a scene in HOME ALONE, in which the boy is watching a gangster movie on TV absent the watchful eye of his mom?
What that has to do with Deadpool I don't know--except isn't the character known for spouting pop culture references?
We shall see.
