Kevin Rushton spent long days on the set for the 2000 film to get Wolverine's introduction to the world just right.

Stuntman Kevin Rushton has performed in dozens of films, but will forever be tied to a pair of crucial scenes in 2000's X-Men that introduced an unknown Australian actor to the world. The scenes saw Rushton and Hugh Jackman's Wolverine go toe-to-toe in a cage fight, and it was almost as painful to shoot as it looks. With Logan, Jackman's ninth and final appearance as the character, hitting theaters Friday, Rushton is looking back on the memorable scenes.

It took about five or six auditions. The scene was originally going to be a lot bigger, with six or eight stunt thugs in the fight with Wolverine. Then it got whittled down, whittled down, whittled down. They cut it down to just one guy with him in the cage. The day of the final audition, I had kidney stones. I was in so much pain, I thought, "Maybe I won’t get it."


A week or two later, I'm on set in Toronto, fighting Hugh Jackman. It was me and him the whole time. He didn't have a stuntman in those scenes. We were pretty sore. Our hands were swollen like crazy. There was one point when our hands collide — and our hands were the size of balloons by the end of it.


They were long days.

When we got to the bar scene, we started adding in the claws. We were there 15 hours, just trying to get that one piece, where he's pinned me against the pole and pulls his claws out the first time and then cuts the shotgun in half.

I remember director Bryan Singer, we used to call him God. He’d have the microphone and we’d hear him from the speakers. We didn’t see him very often. Sometimes, he’d walk out and you realize he's this little guy, this kid. While we were shooting the fight, he'd yell, "Hit him harder. Hit him a little harder! I want your hands exploding!"

It’s hard to keep your composure, or keep happy during long days. Which is another thing I found when you are with Hugh: He was just happy the whole time. He trained really hard for it. It was one of his first big films. When I saw him five years later when we were doing X-Men: The Last Stand, I thought "Holy crap man, you never stopped!" He was huge.


For The Last Stand, we were in Vancouver and he went, "Hey! I know you!" and gave me a hug. He was a big star by then, but he was the same person that I’d met in Toronto the first time we stepped through every minute of our fight. I was on The Last Stand for almost two months, and he was just a gentleman to everybody. We had some long nights and long hours and miserable weather — and he never teetered off of being the nice person from day one. It was a highlight for me in my 30 years.


On my last day on the first X-Men, he signed an autographed picture for my kid. He said, "Hopefully I’ll see you again." And it ended up happening. He gave me another on The Last Stand. I hated asking for them, but I got them. My kids love them.

The original X-Men cast met up virtually on Saturday, only to find that Ryan Reynolds and some other actors from the franchise had crashed the reunion.

As part of the Global Citizen: Unite For Our Future benefit concert, Hugh Jackman, Halle Berry, Famke Janssen and Patrick Stewart reunited on Zoom.

“Honestly it's kind of surreal you guys, I can’t believe it’s been 20 years since the first X-Men movie,” Jackman said, just before Reynolds popped up on the screen.

“Ryan, the cast and I were all just reminiscing about the movie that we’re in together,” Jackman said to Reynolds, who does not appear in the original X-Men movie in 2000, but stars in 2009’s X-Men Origins: Wolverine.

Jackman gently tried to push Reynolds out of the reunion — “See ya, Ryan” — when the Deadpool actor revealed that he’d actually invited a few others from different X-Men films.

Sophie Turner and James McAvoy, both from X-Men: Dark Phoenix, then appeared and quickly left, along with most of the other reunion members.

“Oh sorry, I actually thought this was a Game of Thrones reunion,” Turner admitted. “Bye!”

“I actually have a James Bond reunion Zoom now,” Janssen said, to which Berry said, “Oh God me too,” before exiting.

“Split reunion,” McAvoy said, while Stewart explained, “Star Trek.”

Reynolds turned to a disgruntled Jackman and addressed him by his character’s name, “Just you and me Logan, you know what that makes this a reunion for?”

Appearing on screen for just one second, Liev Schreiber answered his question, “X-Men Origins reunite!”

Though the coordinated reunion was lighthearted, Jackman concluded his appearance with a heartfelt message to those who are fighting on the frontlines of both the coronavirus and the Black Lives Matter movement.

“Sometime in the not too distant future the hard work of every global citizen will bring about a healthier, safer, more equitable world,” he said. “To all the first responders, essential workers and those fighting for racial justice: I stand in awe of your efforts this year and I stand with you.”

On its 20th annivesary of release, HBO rescreened the first XMen movie!

Feeling sentimental and not sure how my memory has held up - I watched it again

*In the first part of the movie, Hugh's acting was quite muted...as if he was assessing how his character will be welcomed into the fold. But his facial expression had highlighted his sense of trying to find his footing.

*However, once the action part became more pronounced the character of Wolverine ( he was called Logan, not Wolverine) evolved - he looked almost frightening in some of the scenes!

*He did a lot of action scenes -- of course, some may have been done with doubles, but you can see how Hugh seemed to have mastered the fight choreography so well since then.

*Personality-wise, he outshone even theatrical vets like Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen. Maybe because inspite of Wolverine's famous taciturnity ( and complete with such an expressive face and impressive vocal range) it was coupled with his aggressive body language especially in the fight scenes.




I think that was when the fans started falling in love with the movie Wolverine

*Moving forward - I think Hugh developed the character very well through the rest of the original trilogy (extending to now star-of-the-moment, the famous Days of Future Past) to the solo trilogy...and when LOGAN came along, one can appreciate the full saga of this hero-with-a-chip-on-his-shoulder!
