If you have been occasionally following some of the Jackman-related tweets (on Twitter itself) --

there have been a lot of tweets, including quotes from Deadpool Ryan, wanting the team-up with Wolverine for the next sequel...hence the "savage" reply from Wolverine (artistically conceived to indicate his reluctance).

If Bryan Singer's first X-Men film was like a warm-up session in the Danger Room for Marvel's merry band of mutants, then the 2003 sequel was the real freakin' deal. Escaping the occasional cheapness of the original, X2 - given the subtitle X-Men United for some reason by Fox - knocked it out of the park.

Hugh Jackman's Wolverine doesn't just get to kick more butt while uncovering his Secret Origin, but the character's affinity for the gentler side of life - kids, redheads named Jean - is further explored here, building on the Wolvie/Rogue relationship of the first film. Meanwhile, new characters like the angel-in-devil's-clothing Nightcrawler and the villainous Stryker are interesting and compelling. And returning characters such as Storm, Jean Grey and Cyclops are all much more polished than in the previous film.

Deadpool


Featuring the role Ryan Reynolds was born to play - so much so that he'd already played a (literal) muted-down version of it in X-Men Origins: Wolverine - the massively violent, vulgar (and hilarious) Deadpool hit theaters at just the moment when the surplus of super-flicks had seemingly reached a tipping point and fans were ripe and ready for a gory, go-for-broke meta-take on the topic.

Wise-cracking Wade Wilson's transformation into the fourth-wall-breaking Deadpool may have been yet another origin story, but it was overflowing with legit laughs, some much-needed jabs at the genre, and righteous usage of Wham!'s "Careless Whisper." Reynolds, who'd been an underutilized "next big thing" for years, finally found his grail and audiences fell in love with a crass crusader on a rudimentary revenge mission (set loosely within the X-Men universe).

X-Men: First Class

Despite persisting rumors of a rushed production and various problems, X-Men: First Class turned out to be a first-rate prequel that re-imagined the franchise while opening us a glorious gateway to an entirely different second run (and second timeline) of films.

First Class benefits from an ace cast - featuring the likes of James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender and Jennifer Lawrence - working under the care of writer-director Matthew Vaughn, a guy who'd had an X-Men movie churning around inside him for years (and who's already appeared twice on this list previously) ever since he left X-Men: The Last Stand weeks before shooting began.

No, continuity within the X-Men franchise will never truly make sense, but First Class' sequel, Days of Future Past, did its best to connect the original trilogy to the leg that Vaughn jump-started here. First Class was fueled with a vibrant new energy that allowed non-Wolverine X-Men projects to flourish once again at Fox.

[Jo's note -- Ha, but which was the most remembered and applauded scene in FIRST CLASS? The Jackman 3-word cameo!]

Logan

Hugh Jackman definitely saved the best for last as his ninth, and final, go-round as Wolverine borrowed from the classic alternate universe "Old Man Logan" tale by Mark Millar and Steve McNiven - and knocked it out of the park.

James Mangold's take on a ragtag road picture, featuring an aged Logan and Charles Xavier, along with a young hunted mutant (Dafne Keen's X-23), was a genre-defying/elevating experience that spilled buckets of blood while audiences spilled buckets of tears. As a surprisingly poignant sendoff for the long-standing star of the X-Men cinematic universe, Logan stands as one of the greatest and most unconventional superhero stories of all time.

Logan might not entirely gel with the established X-Men timelines, but the fact that there are so many discrepancies within the franchise actually allows it to exist on its own island, in one of the many dystopian futures that surely awaits mutants everywhere. And Jackman's nuanced, savage performance makes you believe that this Logan might have seen them all at some point.

while audiences spilled buckets of tears

I distinctly remember audience reactions on 2 different IMAX screenings of LOGAN after the last scene unfolded and then blackout --

People were stunned -- nobody stood up and people were just sitting there. Maybe trying to compose themselves after seeing that last scene from the movie! Maybe trying to internalize what that final movie means to the XMen franchise! Maybe even trying to accept that this would be Hugh Jackman's final turn as Wolverine!

I certainly did!


I think that emotional reaction should have put the award community on full notice that this movie was not just a powerful superhero movie but one with compelling dramatic elements that resonated with its audience!

I was a bit wary to watch it because of tweets I have read expressing disappointment ( in many cases because Wolverine is nowhere to be found...and because to many it seems to be a recycled de-aged XMen 3).

Hmmm...

Having seen it -- I have to agree

*It is not the same when the Prof Xavier is not portrayed by Patrick Stewart and Magneto not played by Ian McKellen. Those two carry such a patrician air about them...and their relationship with Jean gives it a deeper meaning and almost a paternal aspect.

*Jean Grey played by Famke Jannsen was very sympathetic and she carried such a poignant air around her. Sophie Turner, as she did in Apocalypse, is just a blank face once again

*Of course Wolverine was much a part of the lore of the Dark Phoenix...and her relationships with both Cyclops and Wolverine are parts of that legend.

It was more than a sense of disappointment -- the original cast gave the franchise a much classier appeal. Maybe because they were the more experienced and were award-worthy actors? They gave the first XMen movies a kind of intellectual appeal not generally found in typical superhero movies.

Is this how the Xmen franchise is going to end


PS: Unless this is what is going to appeal to the younger generation?

Hugh has created a trending story with his speculation that Wolverine will be back but unlikely that it will be a crossover with Deadpool, as fans may not want that kind of story!
