That was why the host looked familiar -- he was the one who introduced Hugh and Debra Byrne for that " Perfect Year " number from SUNSET BOULEVARD!

THE PERFECT YEAR ( could be said of Hugh's film career in the last 12 months ) from Sunset Boulevard -- www.youtube.com/watch?v=5TKkDgpylq0Interesting comment from the feedback section : Debra had already starred in so many hit musicals then -- and Hugh could hold his own in this, his second musical only. Perfect Year and their duet from Into The Woods ( No One is Alone/Children will Listen) are some of my favorites. Too bad, the film adaptation of SUNSET BOULEVARD never came to pass - with Hugh as Joe! Jo

Nah -- I had to do some backtracking ... after I first "met" him in April 1999 ( when I saw him in OKLAHOMA! in London) ... but only found a few musical performance-oriented clips : *When he sang PEOPLE WILL SAY WE'RE IN LOVE with Shirley Jones at the inauguration of FOX Studios in Sydney, which he hosted. *Some Christmas-oriented performance clips *Singing the LILY'S EYES duet with another Aussie performer *The full documentary of SUNSET BOULEVARD AND THE REGENT THEATRE where it premiered. Maybe the title song of Sunset Boulevard? *Australia Fair anthem at the rugby championship. *Beauty and the Beast short clips *Not sure when the HEY, MR.PRODUCER concert was filmed ( it was before Oklahoma! opened in London in 1998) but I can't remember if early clips ( and not the video/DVD) were shown somewhere -- YouTube was not that active yet at that time, if I recall right But it is great to see these clips of Hugh's early musical performances Jo

Re that cute AFI opening number: During the run of THE BOY FROM OZ an audio of that number with some dummy lyrics, I think, was surfacing online. One example: ""Big stupid fans" had earlier been sung, probably in a run-through, as "big stupid props." That's the lyric I remember. But this is the sharpest, fullest video of that opening song I'd ever seen. I think I first saw this version six or seven years ago. Wonderful to see it again. Thanks.

Yes, thanks for sharing. Was new to me too. Enjoyed seeing the duet with Shirley Jones. Love how he's growing in his original Logan beard for filming of the first X-Men

Thanks. I had the Fox Studio inaugurals but it was on VHS ( Lol - those were the days!). *Seeing those FOX musicals and non-musicals was such a big high -- those were dem movies! I shudder at the thought that FOX may transfer stewardship to Disney!! I wonder what we will get -- musicals for our granddaughters No Marilyn Monroe - LOL! *Eighteen years later, we have FOX giving us another original musical, starring the erstwhile host for the inaugurals -- The Boy from Oz who will now be forever known as THE GREATEST SHOWMAN! Hey, some things do not change after all Jo

I think I may have seen a few parts of this early 60 Minutes Australia interview, but not the whole thing, so indulge me in posting it in all Hugh's promising "early stardom" glory. His charm was always so riveting. You may have to skip through a couple of annoying pop-up ads during the video.

WOW!! Singing among the largest crowd ever!
In 1999! How young and how handsome he looked!
Btw, this was the Hugh that I first "met" in the stage play OKLAHOMA!
But here he sings for a major sports finale in Melbourne!

Holy cow! That was fantastic! Especially holding that last note! He has definitely aged well - not a huge difference between 31 and 51!

But here he sings for a major sports finale in Melbourne! I havn't seen this before either. Thanks for finding it.The venue was the Sydney Olympic Stadium which was built for the 2000 Olympics. It's 110,000 capacity was reduced after the Olympics by the removal of some temporary stands.

Sydney Olympic Stadium - wow! I remember the Opening ceremonies -- wasn't a female athlete from the aboriginal community the one who shot an arrow into the Olympic Flame cauldron ?? Since this was for the 1999 finale of the Melbourne Cup, it must have been newly constructed then?

Since this was for the 1999 finale of the Melbourne Cup, it must have been newly constructed then. Jo This clip of Hugh has nothing to do with the Melbourne Cup. The event was a Rugby League Football Grand Final. I 'm not sure why the poster used a Melbourne Cup hashtag. Maybe he/she was confusing this appearance , with the time Hugh sang the National Anthem at another football game which was in Melbourne. I could be wrong, but as far as I know Hugh hasn't sung at the Melbourne Cup Horse Race which is held on the first Tuesday of November each year. The Olympic Stadium in Sydney was completed ahead of schedule, at least a year before Sep 2000 when the Olympic opening ceremony was held. The torch was lit by Cathy Freeman who went on to win the 800 metres athletics gold medal. I don't remember the arrow though. Perhaps that was a different Olympics.

Yes, it was Cathy Freeman - she did light the Olympic cauldron but by using the Olympic torch.
My mistake - I think it was at an earlier Olympics - the Barcelona one where someone shot an arrow into the cauldron.
The lighting of the cauldron is always a sight to behold!
And...sad...when it is extinguished to herald the end of the games!
