I am reposting this clip ( from the Postcripts to Les Miserables thread) featuring part of the Les Mis gang singing a Christmas song at the Joe's Pub concert last year -- www.youtube.com/watch?v=LoVHclTIJjQ&feature=youtu.beFirst time I have heard FAIRYTALE OF NEW YORK, which is a rousing song celebrating the holidays Russell Crowe, Samantha Barks and Alan Doyle are soloists...and backing singers include Hugh Jackman and Kevin Durand. Today, someone came to our typhoon-stricken city of Tacloban ( here in the Philippines) to bring joy to mostly young people and children. He came in by private plane, went straight to a center where many children/young people were housed, played basketball with them, then did an impromptu concert for the crowd. Among the Christmas songs he sang was SILENT NIGHT! Thank you, Justin Beiber, for the generosity of spirit that inspired you to visit our shores! twitter.com/search?q=Tacloban&src=trenJo

I never knew there was a traditional version by the same name. Interesting! Thanks, Valerie.

Not Hugh-related, but beautiful harmonies . . . [Pentatonix is an American a cappella group]

Thanks!
It's even lovelier listening to the singing with my eyes closed!

I've been very busy during the last week but finally caught up with the postings I've missed. Have time for a couple of quick comments and then I'm off the spend the day with the family. Just wanted to take a moment and wish everyone a very happy holiday in what ever way you are celebrating it. Merry Christmas in our family and we're all going to my son's for food, festivities and fun with the grandchildren. Sue

Great day, delicious food, wonderful friends! Who could ask for more? Tangent: On a sour note, I got a link this morning (my friend's comment was "Can you believe this?" and, frankly, I can't) to Social Media comments #worstchristmasever and #ihatemyparents. I assume some of it was a joke - sarcastic parodies of earlier posts - but I'm sure some of it was real. Kids (and 20/30-somethings +) griping about getting the wrong COLOR iPhone or a pre-owned BMW instead of a new one. I feel like I need to wash my eyes out with soap after reading only a few. Talk about ungrateful, greedy little *bleeps*! <rant> Anyway, I had a fabulous day - about friends, companionship and appreciation - that had nothing to do with gift giving (or getting) - which is just the way I like it. I hope your Christmas (or whatever holiday you celebrate) was wonderful too. This is more my speed - - ...but this is more realistic - - Wishing all my cyber-friends a Happy, Healthy, Prosperous New Year! Hugs! smiley-gen126

It has been a happy and poignant Christmas for us!
Personally, it has been the rounds of holiday reunions ( clan, former workmates, friends, and immediate family) that have marked the feelings of love and joy during the season! Some immediate relatives could not make it this year from America, but technology allowed us to greet each other on our big family day!
On a national scale, our celebrations have been marked by poignant reminders of what we went through in the last few months of the year ( a major earthquake and the strongest typhoon registered on land in the world). One heart-tugging sight was that of children in the typhoon-stricken island of Leyte ( and its famous city of Tacloban) trying to make do with what they can to mark Christmas Day. But what drew the attention of many are their homemade signs of "THANK YOU!", on make-do placards/cardboards where they used to write "HELP!" the first few days after the typhoon! But the spirit is strong and the rebuilding process is now slowly taking place. Part of the support has been the generous support of the international community, including the recent visit of the UN Secretary General! Even Justin Beiber came to our shores to cheer up the kids in Tacloban...and we won't forget Paul Walker!
So, part of our year-end greetings are expressions of apprecation to all those who lent us a helping hand, even if these were just prayers and expressions of sympathy. Thank you all for your generous spirit!

We were lucky enough to spend time with friends and family over the last couple of days. This year we presented a special gift to our family which turned out to be a huge hit. We had a number of reels of old 8-mm film converted into DVDs. My husband spent many hours editing the footage and created a 45-minute movie, featuring family members as they were in the 60s and 70s. We'd planned to simply preview it by showing a few scenes, but everyone insisted on watching the entire thing. Our niece and nephews were amazed to see their grandfather, who died before they were born, having fun with his children and friends, along with their great- and great-great grandparents. They all remarked that seeing a "moving picture" was so different and so much better than a still photo. The little ones were amazed at seeing their grandmother as a young girl, and their own mom as a baby, learning to walk. The unwrapped Christmas gifts remained on the floor and a table full of desserts went untouched because no one wanted to miss anything. Everyone was given a copy, and hopefully they'll be able to enjoy watching it for years to come.
I wish everyone a happy, healthy, and peaceful 2014. If you happen to have any old home movies that you might have forgotten about (as we had) you might want to think about sharing them with those you care about. For our family, being able to view our shared history together was a special experience.

Yes, love the "ditto"--a very economical way to light up, eh? Valerie, I also can't get over the sense of entitlement some younger people have. Wake up and smell the take-home paystub, kiddies.
Jo, I'm glad the rebuilding is progressing well.
May everyone enjoy a peaceful, healthy and prosperous year.

Carol Carol, Years ago when "video cameras" started to be the rage, I actually had all the old home movies transferred into VIDEO... and have now had that video transferred to DVD. Some of those old home movies were actually 16 mm ones, starting with my parents' wedding! The only ones that actually had sound were a couple that "featured" my sister and me at piano recitals, so when they were transferred a musical background was added. We edited nothing out, so every second is there, even the blurry or imperfect takes. Of course by now, they're priceless... I was quite moved to read how successful this venture was with your family. Good for you!!! And thank you so much for sharing. Alma

Alma,
They are indeed priceless, and the "older" family members now have the entire unedited collection. Bodies without heads, scenery shots that are panned so fast that it makes you dizzy, the entire parrot show from Cypress Gardens in 1962. You can't help but smile when watching.
I was struck by the huge difference in how people dressed for everyday occasions, including visiting tourist attractions. Women wore dresses, stockings, heels and even hats wherever they went. While I sometimes think the pendulum has swung too far in the direction of casual attire, I'm very glad that comfort is now a major consideration. We've come a long way.

Carol, I know exactly what you mean about "the entire parrot show from Cypress Gardens"! In my Dad's case, it was a lengthy ventriloquist show at a birthday party... with no sound! But hey, that guy was all the rage back then. My Dad was pretty good at filming, for an aficionado, but what he got teased about a lot was that whenever he filmed us as kids, he always included a short scene of "Saddle Mountain"... by itself. "It's not going anywhere," my uncles kept telling him when we had the chance to (1)rent a projector, (2)gather the family, and (3)watch the movies. You know what? Going through all that trouble was worth it, I think. We didn't have videos right and left, like today, so watching a home movie was special. And as to Saddle Mountain, I guess I took after my Dad, because though it hasn't gone anywhere, I like it a lot too and here it is! Alma

Christmas Spirit - 13 hidden cameras, 9 dedicated (and well rehearsed) cashiers surprising customers in one of Germany's largest super markets. (They could never get the kids in my local market this organized.) I love all the smiles!
