Legend Mickey Rooney died

Another Legend is gone.

Los Angeles (CNN) -- Mickey Rooney, whose roller-coaster, nine-decade career in show business included vaudeville, silent films, movies, television and Broadway, died Sunday. He was 93.

Rooney died in California, the Los Angeles County Coroner's office said.

Rooney's career spanned almost the entire history of motion pictures. He made his first film, the silent "Not to Be Trusted," in 1926 and followed it up with several shorts based on the "Mickey McGuire" comic strip. He was still making movies nine decades later, including "Night at the Museum" (2006) and "The Muppets" (2011).

At the time of his death, he had three more films in the works, according to the Internet Movie Database, including a version of "Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde" with Margaret O'Brien.

If you check out the article by The Hollywood Reporter ( posted under What They Say About Hugh) re Mickey Rooney's legendary performing reputation, there is mention of Hugh Jackman.

The fact is, most actors these days are pigeonholed: When a comic personality wants to do a drama, he or she has to fight for the chance because a financier or studio executive would say her currency is “lost” outside of comedy. And there are so many fewer films made that even when actors do get a shot, they are unlikely to get another one. (As a top box-office star who can also do music and (some) comedy, Hugh Jackman is perhaps a slight bearer of the mantle, though many aspects Rooney pulled off easily, such as grittier character acting, have yet to be proved by Jackman.)

I take exception to the word "slight." But maybe after decades more of dazzling performances, reinventions and surprises, maybe playing against type, Hugh will prove a "legend" to the HR writer.

A very smart person tod me one day, "The cream always rises to the top". It may take time, but in my opinion, he is on his way to the very top.
