Did we see the same play?

I think some self-appointed arbiters of taste like to diss Hugh for some reason. So I don't pay any attention to them.
About the play: I've recently come to the conclusion that the essential character of The Man comes down to how he delivers one crucial line toward the end (possible SPOILER):
"You can go now."
They say Dominic West had a touch of malevolence that hinted at a dark, dangerous personality just beneath the surface. In interviews, director Ian Rickson has said they wanted a different, softer approach for the Broadway production, which is why they wanted Hugh.
There are a few ways The Man can say that "You can go now" line: Matter of fact/dismissively, with a touch of who-gives-a-damn-about-you coldness, as she has filled his temporary selfish need; or with a resigned sadness, a realization that he has blown his chance for a true relationship with The Woman, who will not change her mind about leaving; or finally with a trace of hope, almost like a question, hoping she'll suddenly understand him and change her mind.
I have a feeling West spoke the line coldly.
Early on, I thought Hugh's delivery hewed more to the first, too. But not long after, the impression I got the most often seemed closer to the second. Just my interpretation.

I agree with your final conclusion, Ellen.
He was a sad man in the end and probably realized that he might end up not finding his idealized woman.
The last scenes with The Woman and The Other Woman both leaving were the climactic moments in this reflective play. They were the most absorbing moments, from an audience member's viewpoint.
Too bad that some people did not want to dwell on the intentions of the playwright. They missed the beauty of this creative work.

Resonant reactions with me -- it is romantic, real, and sad!

Would like to ask the cast if he smells like fish thrust the play!

Carol, he cleans his hands pretty well with soap, water and lemons. So I don't think that's an issue. However, if you sit in the first row in the even 200s or even 100s, yes, there's a little lingering odor of fish near the bucket. But it's not too bad.
