Which reminded me -- when I was exiting the "cliffs" of CITS, I was following a middle-aged couple who looked like regular, well-dressed New York theatregoers. The husband prompted the wife with : "Hey, let's get a poster -- it is, after all, for charity".

And maybe the holiday spirit is also sparking the generosity of theatre fans, quite apart from Hugh's indefatigable efforts to "shamelessly exploit (people) in the pursuit of the common good" And yet, Hugh is just as gracious and generous with people who wait at the stagedoor for their playbills or tickets to be signed or even just to say HI! Really fun action yesterday. A woman bid $2,000 for Hugh's "drawers," eliciting many laughs. Hugh looked up to Tom Viola, BC/EFA head, and asked, "Is that OK?" More laughs. Hugh, laughing, said something like: come on back, and we'll work something out--so I'm not sure his undies actually changed er, hands. I spied Jez Butterworth in an upper row when he got into the bidding for the shirt. In full disclosure, Hugh ID'd him but said he'd never participated before as a "plant." But Jez got a big laugh when he announced that for $1,000, he'd also explain the play. Hugh, doubled over with laughter, rightly figured half the audience might not have heard him, so he said, "For a thousand bucks the playwright will tell you what the hell you just saw." Lots of laughs at this quip. Liev Schreiber and Naomi Watts were in attendance, as was Kevin Durand. None of them bid, by the way. Hugh ended up with $8,000 for two shirts, plus an unknown number of photo-takers (and the underwear-fixated lady). Ellen

So hilarious! Maybe they could send it to critics like Rex Reed ...I wish I had been there for arguably the best moment, to-date, of the auctions. Thanks, Ellen -- for clarifying the " underwear" bid -- I thought the tweeter who wrote about it thought his t-shirt is technically classified as underwear Wouldn't it be great if someone had been filming these spontaneous moments and selling the compilation like bloopers on movie DVDs, for the benefit of BC/EFA? I wonder if there are moments of hilarity that could also be included from other shows? Jo

Ooh, another good night. They really make up for others that yield much less.

The bidders are getting more aggressive -LOL! www.youtube.com/watch?v=QKZML02gkJ4&feature=youtu.beHilarious! Amazing how Hugh handles every bidding situation! It has to be his entertainer-DNA which readily elicits those replies from him The auction is providing extra entertainment for the price of the ticket to THE RIVER! Jo
