On another thread ( HJ As A Theatre Afficionado), Hugh posts an autographed poster from the Pacino play HUGHIE. Do you remember one of the earliest stagedoor stories which Hugh shared about his stint in Beauty and the Beast?
It seems that at the stagedoor, a few little girls were waiting to get their autograph books signed. When her turn with Hugh came, she handed him her autograph book. Then she asked him who he was playing in the musical. When he told her that he was Gaston, the indignant little girl snatched back her autograph book and said " You are bad!".
LOL!

From someone who saw the show then -- When I first saw Hugh on a live stage ( Oklahoma!, London, 1999), two things drew my attention -- his vocal power which I thought had a legit stage quality... and his commanding stage presence because of his height and how his long legs looked in cowboy chaps! The next time I saw him was on Broadway -- we were seated on front row center on Row AA at the Imperial -- he looked very tall again Jo |

I wonder if Hugh, at the time he accepted his first stage role of Gaston, knew how well the character has imprinted itself into the hearts of many fans ( whether Disney fans or simply fans!) -- that it is a really a character made in villainy heaven  Beauty and the Beast is the first animated movie I have ever bought a video of. It was not just the well-loved musical score but also the very different and fascinating characters therein -- big-as-a-barge/every-inch-covered-with-hair Gaston, included ... That it is the first animated movie to have been nominated for a Best Picture Oscar ( when the nominees were limited to 5) is proof that it is an artistic success. I never saw it on Broadway when it was adapeted to the stage but I did see a London production and two local productions. I was lucky to get a copy of the Original Cast Recording ( a real CD!) of the original Australian production. I will likely see the live-action film adaptation of the animated movie ( I understand it is not the adaptation of the stage musical because it will not include the songs added for the stage) when it arrives two weeks after WOLVERINE 3 says farewell for Hugh. But I will think that I would enjoy the new Beauty and the Beast even more if Gaston is portrayed by the strutting and singing Australian actor who was introduced to the professional stage via the character of Gaston! Enjoy the brief discussions among these talented composers! Btw, Robert Lopez is the only true EGOT (Emmy/Grammy/Oscar/Tony awards) among these talented group...and I swell with a bit of pride when I write that he is of part-Filipino heritage. "He is the youngest of only twelve people who have won an Emmy, a Grammy, an Oscar, and a Tony Award, and the quickest (10 years) to win all four.", per Wikipedia notes on EGOT. Jo |

Someone's terribly confused   Is it brawn, braggadocio, and baritone ... or ... muscles, mutton chops, and mutant claws  ? Disney event -- did they want to get Hugh Jackman back Recast him as Gaston or fold in the XMen to the Disney/MCU fold  |

Although some on line thought Luke Evans "killed it" in that famous Gaston sing-off, critics might think otherwise. From The Wrap:
"And Luke Evans is not at all suited to the role of the villainous, sexy, and menacing Gaston, which requires a boisterous, preening actor who can get some hammy laughs out of being vain. Evans can only manage the menace of the part, and even his menace is too monotonous and heavy-spirited"
I wish more video of Hugh's Gaston existed!

We've seen this clip of Hugh's visit to NYC when he had completed his stint as Gaston and was just about to fill in the role of Joe Gillis ( Sunset Boulevard)...but embedded here are three scenes from BEAUTY AND THE BEAST ( the last one is where he sings "...the size of a barge" (typical Gaston braggadocio!)
Yup, the most "endearing" description of Gaston was that he was a braggart!!! But "with biceps to spare"!
