Road to recovery! Hugh Jackman made his first red carpet appearance since revealing on Instagram Nov. 21 that he underwent treatment for skin cancer on his nose. The 45-year-old actor wore a small band-aid on his nose while attending the David Lynch Foundation Presents: Change Begins Within Benefit Gala in New York City on Tuesday, Dec. 3.

Jackman flashed a big smile to photographers while proudly posing on the red carpet. The Wolverine star looked handsome in a dark suit while standing beside wife Deborra-Lee Furness at the Conrad New York hotel. Jackman has wife of 17 years to thank for convincing him to go to a doctor for a mark on his nose.

"Deb said to get the mark on my nose checked. Boy, was she right!" Jackman captioned a photo of himself with a large bandage on his nose on Instagram Nov. 21. "I had a basil cell carcinoma. Please don't be foolish like me. Get yourself checked. And USE sunscreen!!!"

Hugh Jackman wore a band-aid on his nose while posing with his wife, Deborra-Lee Furnes, at his first red carpet appearance since undergoing treatment for skin cancer.


At the event Tuesday, Jackman and Furness, 57, chatted with Us Weekly about family bonding with children Ava and Oscar through meditation.

"I said [to one our our teachers] what do we do with the kids if we want to mediate?" Jackman recalled about how they started meditating together. "He said, 'Just be quiet in the house and tell the kids they don't have to mediate' -- they were young. But say, 'There's no TV, there's no talking, you can read, do whatever you want.' And what we found is we would meditate."


"They just sit in a room with us," Furness explained. "They loved it . . . They would be upset when the time ended. They sit there, they'd draw. They knew that they had to be quiet, but it made us all be together without using words or anything. But energetically we were all together sitting comfortably in our truth which is what this meditation is."

Jackman added: "We got used to a quiet time together in the house. Now they're sort of naturally getting into it. Meditation has changed our lives."

Sydney Opera House launches Own Our House campaign
Scheme will enable patrons to purchase a virtual 'tile' in bid to raise $15m 'seed funding' to increase public access

Actually, it’s more like over 125,000 virtual pieces on sale, with each and every roof tile of the structure’s tallest sail on a virtual 3D map of the Opera House up for grabs under an innovative and hi-tech campaign called Own Our House. It could see Pyke’s tile nestling on a famous arch next to other campaign supporters such as Hugh Jackman, Jack Thompson, and Delta Goodrem. If all the tiles are sold, the venture will raise $15m.

One of the first "housemates", Hugh Jackman, says the Opera House "belongs to all of us".

“Own Our House is a great way for people to show their pride and affection for one of the world’s greatest icons and Deb and I are happy to be involved with our family,” he says.

“It’s about sharing ownership, giving a way for people to demonstrate their affection and to fit their family or perhaps go up there by themselves and nestle in under Hugh Jackman … whatever they feel like – though we think that tile might go pretty quickly,” says Herron.

I would love an "excuse" to go back... This would be a fabulous venue for his one-man (far, far OFF) Broadway show!

Who would ever think the "sails" were made of white tiles? Although it probably makes sense, as tile would not corrode like metal, being by the Sydney Harbour.

It is a very huge complex - I was glad we had some Aussie friends with us when we saw PIRATES OF PENZANCE ( with Anthony Warlow), during the time of Hugh's TBFO Sydney run. Hugh has never performed at the Opera House, although he did hosting duties for a cultural presentation for the Pacific Rim meet hosted by Australia ( involving heads of state or deputies from nations around the Pacific).

As much as community goodwill is likely to carry the project along, it helps, too, that Hugh Jackman has already bought 11 tiles and Glen Hansard 15. Jack Thompson, Josh Pyke, Delta Goodrem and Matt Moran have all added their faces and messages to digital versions of their tiles.

How Hugh Jackman Became A Fair Trade Coffee Entrepreneur
With Laughing Man, the movie star is finding ways to get small coffee growers good prices outside the monolithic coffee world. Here, he talks about how he started.

I met Dukale, a small-time coffee grower, while on a trip to Ethiopia as an ambassador for World Vision, I was deeply impressed by his strength and his dignity. Despite overwhelming obstacles, Dukale supported his family and produced high-quality organic coffee. I also sensed a kinship with Dukale. Like me, he was a worker and a father who wanted to thrive and provide for his family. Only one thing had been holding Dukale back: his circumstances. He needed tree cover to grow his coffee beans, but he also needed to harvest his trees for fuel. He was able to produce the highest quality coffee, but he had no access to markets that would offer him a fair price.

When, 30 years ago, aid organizations came to Africa, they focused on emergency relief. In our conversations, Dukale made it clear that he did not want to subsist on the generosity of others. He wanted what we all want: to realize the fruits of our own labor. Having shifted away from relief to development as a way of preventing emergencies, World Vision had recently partnered with Dukale to construct a methane gas system that converted cow manure into lamplight and cooking flame. This simple innovation spared his family prolonged exposure to smoke, enabled his children to study for school after dark, and allowed Dukale to spend more time developing his farm so he could grow more coffee. The methane burner also meant Dukale no longer had to cut down the trees that provided necessary shade for his coffee plants and oxygen for the ozone.

The methane gas system convinced me of what I already knew: simple innovations could transform the lives of millions of people, allowing them to be more resourceful and independent. But, as I spent the day following in Dukale’s footsteps on his family farm (shoveling, managing livestock, planting trees) and listening to his story, I realized that no one could succeed alone. Like millions of other men and women in countries all over the world, Dukale was isolated with limited access to the markets and opportunities of the developed world. In simple terms, he could not sell his coffee for a fair price.

When I first arrived home from my trip to Ethiopia, I spoke at the UN as a World Vision ambassador about the need to work with farmers like Dukale so that they can realize a Fair Trade price for their coffee. At the time, I thought I could make a connection between Dukale and existing distribution. I didn’t see any reason why it wouldn’t be relatively simple. Coffee distributors funneled coffee from all over the world to stores and cafes all across the United States. I immediately discovered, however, that the coffee business--cafes, patrons and distributors--was not set up to benefit the small farmer.

But when I traveled back to Africa, I saw that the coffee exchange in Ethiopia could not offer Dukale a Fair Trade price for his coffee. Dukale needed partners, but no partners or infrastructure existed either in Africa or the United States to allow Dukale to build a bridge to a future for his family and his farm. Like many people, I had thought I could strive to change the way the world does business while maintaining a personal distance from the details. Though I wanted to see Dukale thrive, I had never thought of going into business myself. Now I questioned my assumptions. During the day that Dukale and I had worked together on his farm, we had formed an easy bond, and now I wanted to continue working with him.

Once I realized that I would, in going into business, have to create a new model to bring Dukale’s coffee to the world, I had trouble at first understanding how we would reach our goal. I loved coffee, and I knew Dukale grew the best coffee in the world, but I didn’t know how to serve as a distributer or a café owner. Paul Newman had set an impressive example of how to harness the power of commercial branding into a philanthropic engine. Though a powerful tool (and one I had used before in philanthropic contexts), branding alone would not prove strong enough to overcome the obstacles Dukale and I faced.

We were not starting a charity. We were in the coffee business. I needed to start a business that could partner with farmers like Dukale in order to gain access to markets. Where no infrastructure existed, I had to find a way to create it through distribution and cafes in New York that would introduce Fair Trade coffee by Dukale and others directly to consumers. The business Dukale inspired, Laughing Man Worldwide, reinvests 100% of its profits in its partnerships with farmers. Laughing Man Worldwide approaches farmers as equals in pursuit of a shared dream. Working together, we learn from each other, and slowly we begin to redefine what it means to do business and what it means to be happy.

By practicing co-branding, Laughing Man Worldwide approaches farmers as equals in pursuit of a shared dream.



Momtrends: In your opinion, what makes a good cup of coffee?

Hugh Jackman: First of all, a good cup of coffee tastes good. It tastes fresh and rich and free of artificial flavors, as distinctive for what you can detect as what you will not find: chemicals, fertilizers and the other byproducts of industrial processing. Just as important as the coffee, though, is the story. The perfect cup of coffee not only has a story, but a true story of the farmers who planted the seeds with their own hands and the lives of the families transformed by your purchase.

Momtrends: How do you find where your coffee/tea is sourced from?

Hugh Jackman: When you buy a cup of Laughing Man coffee, you are buying coffee grown by people we know. Momtrends: Can you tell us what it means to buy fair trade coffee?

You want to know about the soil, the fertilizers, the method of processing and packaging. From the moment the seed is planted in the ground to the moment the coffee is ground and served, you want to know that the coffee you put in your body is treated with care and nurtured according to organic principals. The grower and merchant are fairly compensated and the consumer buys a superior product that they know is safe and delicious.



Momtrends: What do you think parents will appreciate about the coffees/teas that you offer?

Hugh Jackman: When I first met Dukale and his family in Ethoipia, I was deeply impressed by their work ethic and by Dukale’s determination to make a better life for his family. Before World Vision assisted Dukale in the creation of a methane burner for a stove, his wife spent hours every day collecting firewood, his children had no lights in their home after dark, and his family was exposed every day to smoke from the open fire. After the simple innovation of the methane stove, Dukale’s wife could spend more time farming and raising the children; his children no longer had to inhale smoke and fumes all day, and his school age children could now study at night by the light of the flame. Dukale and his wife hope that their children will finish school and strive to make a better life for themselves, their own families, and the communities of the future. The smallest innovations and improvements can transform the lives of farmers and their families in Ethiopia and other communities around the world.
