MSNBC joins Jay-Z, No Doubt, others for Global Citizen Festival

It’s a free concert for a great cause.

MSNBC and NBC News are joining Jay-Z, Hugh Jackman, No Doubt, Carrie Underwood, fun., The Roots, Tiësto, and other celebrities and world leaders for the Global Citizen Festival. The goal: End extreme poverty by 2030.

The Global Poverty Project will host the concert in New York City’s Central Park on September 27. For the first time ever, the festival will air live on MSNBC and MSNBC.com. NBC News will also broadcast a one-hour prime-time special from the event.

“Thousands of global citizens will gather together to convince world leaders to end extreme poverty by the year 2030,” Jackman said Wednesday on Morning Joe. “This is going to be the biggest year by far, and we’re so excited that NBC and MSNBC will be our partners.”

Want to go? The Global Poverty Project is giving out 45,000 free tickets to those who take actions to improve the lives of more than 50 million people via vaccines, education, sanitation, and more.

In the effort’s previous two years, actions taken by concertgoers resulted in $1.3 billion in new funding and 35 commitments from world leaders to benefit the poor.

“Change only takes place when and where there is action,” Jay-Z said. “I’m joining the 2014 Global Citizen Festival because I believe through actions, whether it be by raising awareness, getting involved, or educating ourselves, the goal to end extreme poverty by 2030 is possible.”

Maybe they can release a DVD of the event and raise more money for the advocacy?

Hugh will likely be done with PAN filming by then ( Welcome back Hair or the start of it...Goodbye Moustache ).

A video clip on this unusual project -- you cannot purchase tickets but need to do one of the proposed action items to be in the lottery to get tickets! It is also encouraging social activism among young people.

Many would think that Hugh's early audition piece STARS was what his inclination towards musical theatre would have taken him ( although the song was declined by the musical director for Beauty and the Beast as suitable for him) to the musical stage.

It looks like it was a different song which clicked for him in his acting school days. Copied from the article --

It's about as off-Broadway as you can get. On an amateur stage at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts in suburban Perth, Hugh delivered his first sell-out performance. It was an ambitious rendition of ANTHEM, from the musical CHESS, and it's fair to say - back in 1993 - that expectations weren't high. " I was in the acting school, not the musical theatre school" Jackman recalls with a laugh.

His confidence wasn't high either. The dedicated student was actually halfway through his degree but his teachers knew he was holding back.

"For a year- and- a- half, I'd been hearing from the teachers : "It's good, Hugh, but I want to feel you inside the character. I feel you standing outside the character," he says. But that night, beneath the glare of the spotlight, something magical, almost transformative happened, and instead of watching a tone-deaf wannabe die a slow musical death, the audience witnessed the birth of a superstar.

"It was in that song, for the first time, that I felt " it", he says, with a rush of sentimentality...

*It would have been glorious to have seen that performance!

*And the song he chose was ANTHEM smiley-love029...Certainly better than STARS, to my mind! STARS is popular because it is often sung with great power but it is mostly more of an introspective piece ( even if the bombastic delivery sometimes masks it -- see how people almost resented Russell Crowe's delivery, in contrast to the stage renditions). ANTHEM, one of the most inspiring of all musical theatre songs ( like " The Impossible Dream, the reprise of "Camelot", etc) draws from the heart and the soul. If you are not familiar with it, it is the song that the Russian grandmaster sings when he was making a heartbreaking decision on whether he should defect out of Russia or not. It ia a song proclaiming one's love of country! Very stirring and very hearfelt! The melody itself is beautiful and the ending crescendo is unbelievable!

LOL - my gushing is showing...but

I hope Hugh will once again revisit this beautiful song!

Thanks, Jamie for that original rendition of ANTHEM from the Broadway CHESS. I have both the original concept album from the UK and the Broadway transfer album. Love the musical score - so many wonderful songs ( I Know Him So Well, One Night in Bangkok, You and I, many others, and of course, ANTHEM (which gives me goosebumps everytime I hear a new rendition. ABBA's Benny Anderson and Bjorn Ulaveus of ABBA and Tim Rice composed the song.

Some the most memorable are from Anthony Warlow, Michael Ball, Josh Groban.

Hugh Jackman has spent over £200,000 on scratchcards for his film crews.

The 'Wolverine' star has reportedly been splashing out on lottery cards for production staff working on his films for the past 14 years as he thinks the knowledge that they could be set to win huge cash prizes helps to boost their morale on set.

An insider revealed: "He loves that it helps keeps spirits up."

However, despite spending a huge sum on various scratchcards over the years, no-one is said to have won a substantial amount of money as of yet.

The 45-year-old actor's agent told The Sun newspaper: "There have been winners but no one's hit it big - yet."
Meanwhile, Hugh is said to have been doling out more of them than ever while filming his latest blockbuster 'Pan' - in which he stars as Blackbeard alongside Amanda Seyfried and Burberry model Cara Delevingne - in the UK.
