A SPECIAL adoption institute aimed at ensuring the mistakes of the past are not repeated will be established in NSW should the Baird government be re-elected in March.

In a move welcomed by global adoption advocate Deborra-lee Furness, the State government will call for expressions of interest from universities and keystakeholders to become a partner in what will be the first institute of its kind in Australia.

Local and inter-country adoptions have been in decline over the past two decades, with advocates blaming the controversy surrounding the Stolen Generation and unwed mothers being forced to give up their babies for the policy-area becoming a no-go zone for governments.

Last week, the Federal government announced details of a national agency to be established to provide free advocacy and support for couples wanting to adopt while revealing it was sending a team to Vietnam to explore a new adoption agreement.


NSW Premier Mike Baird will today announce a $2.85 funding package for its proposed Institute of Open Adoption, which will focus on children in out-of-home care.

Open adoption incorporates ongoing contact between the adopted child, the parents, and the adoptive parents where it is in the child’s best interests.

Mr Baird said increasing the number of adoptions in NSW would be a key priority of a re-elected Coalition government to provide vulnerable children and young people with permanent safe and nurturing homes.

“Protecting vulnerable members of our society is a key objective of this government, and I believe the barriers to adoption should be further reduced,” he said.

“When safe, secure and stable family homes are not available, open adoption can be the best option to provide children with stability.

“I want to see more adoptions, and to make them happen faster. Currently children and adoptive parents wait for too long with too much uncertainty.”



NSW Family and Community Services Minister Gabrielle Upton said the Institute would be charged with providing guidelines on best practice to fast-track adoptions while ensuring the best outcomes for children who have been removed from their families.

“This Institute will lead high quality independent research into open adoption to inform policy, professional development and practice in the field. Significant knowledge gaps exist, with a lack of research conducted in Australian settings,” she said.

“The Institute will build community awareness of contemporary adoption practice, and support our efforts to improve pathways to adoption.

“We cannot do this alone and the NSW Government will also call for Expressions of Interest from universities, stakeholders and other interested parties to partner with us in this important initiative.”

Ms Furness, who is the Founding member of adoption advocacy group Adopt Change, described the Institute as “visionary”.

Barnardos Australia chief executive officer Louise Voight, who has been long campaigned for improvements to the local adoption system, also welcomed the move.

After 115 performances, the acclaimed production of Jez Butterworth's The River on Broadway directed by Ian Rickson and starring the remarkable Hugh Jackman closes on Sunday at Circle in the Square Theatre. Of those total performances, Hugh was joined on stage by four incredible women - Laura Donnelly, Cush Jumbo, Jessica Love and Kerry Warren - in raising $1,045,990 over 48 of them, from November 18- December 27! Hats off to stage managers Michael J. Passaro, Pat Sosnow, company manager Heidi Neven, star dresser Geoffrey Polischuk, the crew and front of house staff for their generous support and the cheerful extra efforts making it all possible. A special salute to Irving Milgrom, Lauren Klein and Brian Rao for making sure all backstage gears were turning well and safely, and to Sonia Friedman and THE RIVER producers, Paul Libin and all at Circle for making us welcome.

UK Drama critic and theatre blogger, Mark Shenton ( who usually spends time in NYC to watch what's on offer on Broadway) contrasts how celebrity can be used for personal OR altruistic gain! He uses the example of Hugh Jackman for the latter -- Mark had sttended The River, most likely during the BC/EFA season.

At the end of each performance of Broadway's recent production of The River, Hugh Jackman would hold a public auction for the T-shirt he had worn during the show – and would routinely raise $14,000 by throwing in a second, 'spare' T-shirt when there were rival bidders going head-to-head with each other. So for $7,000 each, the buyer could take home a bit of Jackman's personal DNA (his sweat) and a photo opp with the star was thrown in afterwards, too. In this case, the money raised was all for the annual heroic Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS campaign.

There is definitely gray in his beard, remember he joked how Oscar called him Blackandgraybeard when he was growing it out last spring. The lightness at his temples could just be from the lighting in the room. And maybe he shouldn't wear gray sweaters.

Not getting homesick because he's home. Pretty sure this is a current picture.

His costume seems like a metallic color - that is why the shade varies? Maybe it is pewter? Or coppery cocoa brown? Or something else?

Whatever it is - he looks good especially in dark colors. Joe Wright says Blackbeard is wicked and beautiful!

Odd-looking pants for a pirate -- instead of the usual, he is wearing jodphurs!

Maybe PAN will get a nod for costume design?
