Yes, it's finally getting a theatrical release in the US after one or two film festival appearances here last year. Even if the scale of the release is likely to be extremely limited ("select theaters"), it's nice that his good works will again get some further recognition, such as through this article. From the new trailer, it does appear there may be at least a few updates to the documentary since it originally aired as Seeds of Hope.

After he went to Ethiopia, he was going the rounds of some small coffee houses in downtown NYC and I thought he was going to do a follow-up documentary with those interviews conducted by him. This was before he set up LAUGHING MAN.

Maybe those scenes could be part of the updates?

Hugh Jackman has joined forces with a sunscreen brand to protect children from an enemy he's faced thrice: skin cancer.

"You try and put sunscreen on a kid, it's literally like herding cats," said Jackman, known for his role as Wolverine in the "X-Men" franchise.

With Pure Sun Defense, which is made in Texas, the Australian actor is helping to make affordable children's sunscreen -- and hoping that the brand's use of cartoon characters draws young children's attention and educates them to the sun's effects on their skin. Jackman is also the cofounder and executive director of the Pure Growth Group, which developed the Pure Sun Defense sunscreen line.


The youngest of five children, Jackman said he spent his childhood outdoors, trying to keep up with his brothers under the blazing sun. He said he was not told to apply sunscreen.

"It was all outdoors," he told ABC News. "I don't think my dad or mom ever bought it or made us put it on. ... The thing I remember most, the rule about being outdoors was you weren't allowed to swim within half an hour of eating. ...And it's not true."

What is true, according to the publication JAMA Dermatology, is that one in five Americans will develop skin cancer at some point in their lives.

Jackman said it was while filming "X-Men," that he noticed a speck of blood on his nose.

"I thought somewhere in the fight, I hit myself, right, which is not unusual," he said. "I casually mentioned this to my wife who's like, 'Get it checked. You've gotta get it checked.'"

He waited two months. When he finally did get checked by a doctor, in 2013, the doctor informed him that it was skin cancer. Jackman was diagnosed with the most common and least dangerous: basal cell carcinoma. Jackman then took a picture of himself and posted it to Instagram, warning fans and followers to wear sunscreen.

"He actually, in real time, in my office, was sending Instagrams," dermatologist Dr. Michael Albom said. "That's very unique."

These days, Jackman said, his children are the ones looking out for him.

"You know, it worries them," he said. "They're always saying to me, 'You know, Dad, sit in the shade.'"

When Hugh Jackman first discovered a mark on his nose in November 2013, he thought it was a spot of blood caused by his Wolverine claws.

"I was filming X Men: Days Of Future Past, he recalls. "And my makeup artist said 'You've got a little spot of blood, here on your nose' and I said 'Yeah, I know it was from a fight sequence and I knocked it somehow.' And trust me for 17 years I've played Wolverine and I've had more scraps and cuts ... I'm very clumsy with those claws."

A week later, the makeup artist mentioned it again. "And I said 'Yes, it must have dried up and in the shower I rubbed it off," says Jackman, 47. "Cut to a week later, and she said 'I think you should go get it checked.' "

Jackman's wife, Deborra-Lee Furness, also urged him to see a doctor. "She said 'Get it checked, get it checked, get it checked.' until I did," he recalls.


That's when he was told he had basal cell carcinoma, one of three types of skin cancer.

"It's always a bit of a shock just hearing the word 'cancer,'" says the actor, who opens up about his several skin cancer surgeries in the new issue of PEOPLE. "Being an Australian it's a very common thing. I never wore sunscreen growing up so I was a prime candidate for it."

"I was trying to keep calm about it but it wasn't until [his skin cancer surgeon] Dr. Michael Albom really explained to me that what I had, in a way, was the kind of skin cancer you want to have if you're going to have it," he continued. "Basal cell carcinoma is just something you have to deal with. It's cancerous. It will grow. You just have to get it out."


All together, Jackman has had four skin cancers removed in the last 18 months, three from his nose and one from his shoulder. He's since launched a line of sunscreen for kids, Pure Sun Defense, and wants to raise awareness about how sun exposure can lead to serious complications.

"I go every three months for checkups," he says. "It's the new normal for me. My doctor says I'll likely have more and if that's your cross to bear in life, you should be so lucky."

His doctor, Michael Albom, echoes his message. "Most people want to know what a skin cancer looks like," he says. "And I always say, 'If you get a growth, a lump or a bump or something that looks a little odd to you, get it checked. See a dermatologist. Get a biopsy when warranted."

"I give Hugh a lot of credit for speaking out," adds Dr. Albom. "Hugh is on top of his game because he has been through this enough times now that he is acting on it properly. He is doing great and we are thrilled."

It doesn’t always take much to make a big impact upon somebody else’s life. Sometimes it can be as simple as a cup of coffee.

Tomorrow is World Fair Trade Day, a moment to celebrate the positive change Fair Trade is helping to stimulate on the world’s most vulnerable populations. Fair Trade provides a transparent trading system that creates fair prices for long-term trade partnerships, with good working conditions. The movement is improving the lives of millions of people and their communities.


To mark the occasion, I want to share one story of how Fair Trade is helping to transform lives. While on a trip to Ethiopia as an ambassador for World Vision Australia, actor and activist Hugh Jackman met a small-time coffee grower named Dukale. The pair hit it off, with Hugh impressed by Dukale’s commitment to providing for his family and creating a great product.

However, as well as many other enormous obstacles, Dukale was being held back by a lack of access to markets to sell his coffee. This led Hugh to discover a wider problem of the coffee industry not being geared towards benefiting small farmers. From distributors to cafes, Fair Trade was not a priority within the sector. He realised that Dukale didn’t need a hand out – he needed a co-worker.


Hugh started Laughing Man Worldwide, an organisation that helps provide farmers like Dukale with access to markets through distribution and promotion. It then reinvests its profits to help support the next initiative. Now Dukale and many others like him are able to build their businesses at scale and provide better for their loved ones. You can help support them by buying coffee from Laughing Man and purchasing other Fair Trade products.

Dukale’s Dream and the Fair Trade movement are all about celebrating entrepreneurial spirit, rewarding hard work and treating people as one would wish to be treated. It’s something we always try to practice at Virgin, and more and more organisations are beginning to realise the benefits of focusing upon people and the planet as well as profit.


I was fortunate enough to meet Hugh in New York last year and briefly hear about his future plans for Laughing Man. I’m excited everyone else will get to hear about them, and learn all about Dukale’s inspiring story through this film.
