HUGH Jackman and Deborra-lee Furness made a rare public appearance in Melbourne last night.

The couple, who are back home visiting family on the Mornington Peninsula, were at the Adopt Change fundraiser at Lindsay Fox’s Classic Car Collection museum in the Docklands.

Furness is the founder of the Adopt Change organisation, which is working towards not only raising awareness about adoption but making well needed legislation changes around adoption law.

The room was full of influential Australians, including the Prime Minister’s chief of staff Peta Credlin.



It was hosted by Hamish Blake and Andy Lee.

Furness said the organisation’s tireless work about making change to Australian adoption law is starting to pay off.

“Tony Abbott has stated that the wait time will change from seven years to an average of 12 months, that is huge,” she told the Herald Sun.

“We are also working at establishing centres of excellence to support adoptive families an adoptive kids.

“But I think the biggest shift is that we have put this on the agenda where for decades people wouldn’t talk about it.”

Furness and Jackman have had some quiet family time while in Melbourne with their two children Oscar and Ava.

“It’s always great to come home,” she said.

“I love hearing the Australian accent, I love the food, the gumtrees, all the classic stuff.

“I love sharing this with my kids, their Australian heritage.”

"Enjoy the next couple of months" -- July and August?

Hugh is committed to go to the ComicCon on July 11, so maybe that would only be flying to the USA West Coast for that commitment ( and maybe handle a few things in Hollywood).

Could also be that Hugh may be doing some producer duties for WOLVERINE 3 and GREATEST SHOWMAN ON EARTH, which could be under negotiations for possible filming in Australia ( Fox has large facilities and access to a large pool of creative talent in Sydney/Australia)? Or even some pre-production duties?

Collateral Beauty is not due to film till the fall, most likely in NYC itself ( they can't film elsewhere ). There is a reason why some of that film's scenes will likely be filmed after Thanksgiving

Five years ago, I started a small documentary project I assumed would last a few months. The film, Dukale’s Dream, ending up including multiple trips to Ethiopia and the creation of a social business. When I first met Dukale, a small coffee farmer working incredibly hard to support his family, I was impressed. It is hard to walk away from an experience like that, so I kept returning to it. For years.

You might think, as I did, that it would be easy for me to help. I could use my voice to advocate for the fair trade movement. What I discovered is that building a truly sustainable business and supply chain is a new frontier. Everyone was experimenting and inventing.

When this dawned on me, I admit I was surprised. I always assumed we knew better ways to do things because the problems were so evident. Solutions, unfortunately, don’t come easy. Ask any entrepreneur and they will tell you that the development of new ideas takes time.

At this point, I was tempted to move on. After meeting coffee farmers, however, it was no longer abstract to me. I had to figure this out. As I met people that eventually comprised my business, Laughing Man, I came to respect a new generation of creative problem solvers who had been trained in their respective fields with an eye toward sustainability. Their scientific knowledge, business savvy, and powers of invention repeatedly amazed me — but it took a while for all this talent to find each other. My partner, David Steingard, grew up in cafe and went on to practice law only to return to the family business. A knowledge of environmental policy and law, as it pertains to coffee, is a rare skill set. For David, Laughing Man was a chance to bring all the parts of his experience together. For me, it was good luck!

I am extremely fortunate to have the acquaintance of Jeffery Sachs at Columbia University’s Earth Institute. He has been an inspiration and important resource to me as I worked through how Laughing Man should operate. The Earth Institute’s academic programs, especially the MPA in Environmental Science and Policy, is graduating professionals who would’ve gotten me to market much sooner. Many of graduates are established professionals that remind me of David; individuals who changed direction not only because of the importance of sustainability, but out of a desire to reconcile their careers with concerns that are both personal and larger than themselves. I am hopeful that the growth of expertise in environmental science and policy will make sustainable businesses more common.

Last month, after all this time, we finally released our documentary recounting our journey. Despite coming so far, I feel that we are just getting started. It is very exciting to create new sustainable solutions. As businesses and governments are realizing the importance of doing so, opportunities abound.

It might be time to start a new documentary.

While "Wolverine's Ethiopian Vacation" might have grabbed extra attention, the more alliterative "Dukale's Dream" documents a meeting that proved life-changing for both Hugh Jackman and a poor coffee farmer during a 2009 trip to Addis Ababa on behalf of World Vision International Australia..

As World Vision ambassadors, Jackman and his wife, Deborra-lee Furness, made the trek to gauge the progress of a community development project that empowered rural farmers to become more self-sufficient.


Being the stand-up guy that he is, it isn't long before Jackman rolls up his sleeves and starts shoveling manure alongside the affable, 27-year-old Dukale, who would prove to make such an impression on the Aussie star that he'd subsequently launch his own fair-trade coffee company back in New York City.


But while Dukale's Blend has proved to be a hot seller at Jackman's nonprofit Laughing Man Coffee, the Josh Rothstein-directed vehicle, produced by the frequently name-checked World Vision, leaves a somewhat unpleasant aftertaste.

Considering that we're not introduced to the titular Dukale until a good quarter-of-an-hour into a film that clocks in at a scant 69 minutes, the end product comes across as an agency fundraising tool rather than an organic documentary portrait.

It may be called "Dukale's Dream," but it's ultimately Jackman's journey.

The first version of the documentary first came out as SEEDS OF HOPE. If I recall right, there was no intention then than simply to document Hugh and Deborra Lee's journey to Ethiopia about a local initiative that World Vision had embarked on re its Global Poverty Project. I remember that the president of World Vision accompanied them in that trip. That version of the documentary was actually released online and gave us an insight on what happened in that trip.

Perhaps because the story is engaging, an updated version to include a filmmaker's perspective was initiated and resulted in it being shown first at a film festival...and now released in theatres and online sources?  That it has become a source of pride and a way to create more awareness for WORLD VISION's GLOBAL POVERTY PROJECT and for the related opening of a fair-trade coffee shop named after Dukale's profile ( LAUGHING MAN).  Nothing wrong about a more focused effort to bring attention to a socially-relevant cause!

I don't think it was ever meant to primarily laud Hugh's efforts. The primary goal was still to create awareness of people like Dukale and how in some way the world can support fair trade and the efforts of small farmers in the hinterlands. Dukale turned out to be an engaging personality and it is his story that is the center of this narrative. Hugh simply used his profile to create awareness of this advocacy! Hugh is not using this documentary to win an Oscar or a Nobel Prize

I really enjoyed this documentary. It shows that regardless of where we live in the world, we all want the same things: economic opportunity, family and to reach our full potential. The story of how two people from very different backgrounds, actor Hugh Jackman and Dukale, a coffee farmer from Ethiopia, connected, is moving and authentic.

I was inspired by the fact that Jackman literally got his hands dirty by coming alongside Dukale to understand what life is like for a poor coffee farmer. Unlike a lot of celebrities, Jackman did not just talk about the issue, he did something about it by starting a coffee company, Laughing Man, which sells only fair trade coffee and donates its profits to charity. Alongside Jackman in the effort is his wife, Deborra-Lee Furness who accompanies him on the journey.

I was impressed by the approach of World Vision which is to work with communities to get themselves out of poverty. Rather than fostering dependence, the organization taps into the potential of communities to help them to maximize their God-given potential.

The movie also shows how consumer choices in deciding to buy fair trade coffee can make a huge difference halfway across the world. In this way, by educating consumers about how they can help the poor through their daily decisions on what coffee to buy, the movie has succeeded in showing all of us how we can make a difference--thus helping to make "Dukale's Dream" a reality for so many other poor coffee farmers.

Don't sleep on this film!!

Dukale's Dream will wake you up! While we see the humble side of Jackman, we also look into the daily, tough life of most humans around the world who struggle to make ends meet. This is but one awesome story of the overcomer and is it a treat. The filming is quite wonderful and colorful in its storytelling as well as the people of Ethiopia. This is a beautiful, inspiring story! This film allows us a glimpse into the crazy background magic happening in all our lives- those seemingly unknown positive forces that are at work and building up as we struggle and think nothing will come of our efforts to bring about needed change. This is truly a feel good message for those who are out there persevering. Indeed, you never know what you are gonna wake up to. Love it!

Josh Rothstein directs such a beautiful film. And thanks to Hugh Jackman and his passion, and his journey to Ethiopia, I have grasped a true understanding of the micro and macro effects of fair trade coffee. Loved seeing the relationship between Hugh and Dukale and I love how the director made true and honest parallels in the lives of two men who, on the surface, could not be more different. But who at the core, have everything in common.

This is a really beautifully filmed and related story of the power of how we as consumers impact the lives of small farmers on the other side of the world. Hugh Jackman’s process of “enlightenment” as a fair trade supporter and then coffee broker is compelling and convincing. I loved it. A must-see for students and church groups. Really anyone who wants to have an impact in their world.
