Australian actor Hugh Jackman photobombed a Channel 10 reporter Jessica Turner, who was in the middle of reporting from the Sydney Children’s Hospital where “The Wolverine” and his wife Deborra-Lee Furness were promoting a new Fight Cancer Foundation initiative that is supposed to help patients keep up with their homework assignments during the school year.

“You can’t really hear it in the clip, but he even yelled out ‘sorry,'” Turner wrote on her website afterwards, where she declared, in an epic pun, that she was now a “Hugh” fan.

How Hugh Jackman Wants To Change The World, One Coffee At A Time

Here’s one way to make your coffee sweeter: have it served by Wolverine. X-Men star Hugh Jackman has teamed up with Keurig to produce a fair-trade line of coffee–claws not included.

As of this summer, Jackman’s Laughing Man Coffee is available through Keurig Green Mountain GMCR -42.31% ubiquitous single serve K-cups. His brand is lending a philanthropic edge to the office pantry product: Every single cup is fair trade certified, meaning it meets certain environmental, labour, and developmental standards in its production.

“This has been a labour of love for six years,” said Jackman, who first started Laughing Man Coffee after a trip to Ethiopia in 2009. Jackman was travelling to film a documentary on coffee as an ambassador for World Vision , a nonprofit which tackles poverty, when he met a farmer named Dukale — the namesake of Keurig’s new line.




“I was so touched by how hard hard he worked and how little benefit he reaped from that,” said Jackman, speaking in SoHo’s Crosby Hotel. “He was a man breaking the cycle of poverty for the first time in generations. I felt compelled to make a promise to him to help out whichever way I could.”

Jackman stuck to his word, returning to New York to urge leaders at the United Nations Climate Week to support farmers like Dukale who work seven days a week on small, 800-tree farms and barely make ends meet. But he realized that the increasing awareness around conscious consumption could galvanize his cause.



In 2011, Jackman launched the Laughing Man Coffee Foundation and two Laughing Man cafes in New York. The best seller: Dukale’s Dream. In 2014, Keurig acquired the Laughing Man brand to produce four Dukale’s Dream coffees.

“Never in a million years did I think there would be a brand of coffee being sold with his name on it,” said Jackman, who donates 100% of his coffee profits to support community initiatives worldwide.

Keurig Green Mountain was founded by billionaire Bob Stiller in 1990–Stiller still owns roughly 5% of the company and recently gave $10 million to Fair Trade USA. Since 2010, Keurig has been the world’s largest purchaser of Fair Trade Certified coffee in the world.

“Consumers’ coffee tastes are expanding and there is increasing demand for distinct, super-premium coffee like Laughing Man’s curated collection,” said Keurig President and CEO Brian Kelley in a statement.


Like milk and mocha, the partnership seems a sweet deal. Keurig receives incredible marketing, while Jackman gets an established distributor with a corporate conscience. More importantly, the Keurig deal prevented Jackman from making a questionable decision many social entrepreneurs face.

“They rescued us almost getting into franchising,” Jackman reflected. “We were being approached by people because our coffee shop was doing well and people were loving the product and with my profile, they were like, ‘Let’s franchise this out.’”

Jackman, who did not want to lose quality control, opted not to franchise, a choice he says was wise. He remains a fervent believer in the importance of fair trade products–and a damn good salesman.



“I’m a realist, and I’m a coffee lover. Are you a coffee lover?” Jackman inquires, leaning forward in his seat. When I politely decline and respond that I prefer tea, Jackman continues: “But you use the word love, so you understand no matter what the philanthropic side is, you need to love that cup of tea.”

“If I’m going to make it in my home I have to love it so the quality has got to be there,” Jackman enthused. “With fair trade you know there’s going to be good quality.”

Jackman says that with fair trade products workers get a fair price, the way farmers treat the soil is protected, no child labor is used and farmer’s families receive an education.


“Most people now, thankfully, want to know where their t-shirt, pair of jeans, or cup of coffee is coming from and how the people bringing it to them are being treated,” Jackman explained. “They don’t want to take advantage of anyone–with fair trade, you know that’s not the case.”

As for Dukale, Jackman says they continue to communicate through letters. “I think he’s thrilled by it.” (The documentary detailing Jackman’s initial trip, called Dukale’s Dream, is available to stream.)

Jackman earned an estimated $23 million in the last 12 months to be one of the World’s Highest-Paid Actors; Keurig clocked revenues of $4.7 billion in fiscal 2014. The “Chappie” star, meanwhile, is adamant that he is not getting in to any other business ventures.

“There are some times where I occasionally have to learn lines and dress up and pretend to be other people, but right now, we’re just focusing on this,” Jackman quips.

As for his coffee, Jackman takes it black and prefers–of course–Dukale’s blend, brewed strong. Despite all these years in Hollywood, he’s still an Aussie at heart: “When I’m not in Wolverine training, I like a flat white.”
