Maybe we should already set up a new thread for this film project, as it is already slated for a fall filming schedule? Hughmanity has reported the Variety exclusive re the possibility of Jason Segel joining the cast ( from the thread Jackman Film Role News). Cinemablend likewise puts in its two cents' worth re the possibility -- www.cinemablend.com/new/Jason-Segel-Hugh-Jackman-Making-Movie-Together-It-Sounds-Great-72042.htmlJason is more well known for his work as a comedian ( How I Met Your Mother) but it seems that he is now pursuing a different career direction based on his more recent work. I am really curious to know whether Collateral Beauty is a full-on drama or will it be more like a dark comedy? I hope though that it will be supported as a wide-release film project, unlike Me and Earl and The Dying Girl which was released on a limited basis as an arthouse movie. Jo

Rooney Mara is pretty busy these days. She has just won the Best Actress prize at the Cannes Film Festival. Before she starts filming COLLATERAL BEAUTY, she is slated to film a love drama called BLACKBIRD. collider.com/rooney-mara-ben-mendelsohn-blackbird-movie/From the official press release -- For COLLATERAL BEAUTY, there are three key female roles -- I wonder which one is slated for Rooney? So do you have some inside knowledge of the script or just some other source which has provided insight into the other characters in the story?
(PLEEEEASE don't spill spoilers about the script, if that's the case).

The above news seems to supersede the schedule for GREATEST SHOWMAN ON EARTH --
The listing for Collateral Beauty was updated on June 23, 2015, while the last update for Greatest Showman on Earth was made on March 16. Also, Wolverine 3 seems to have a firm schedule for filming now ( February 2016) and it seems that it will follow Hugh's filming schedule for Collateral Beauty. The last news we heard about GSOE was that Hugh was trying to work out a oossible transfer of iilming to Australia. Hope we get some clarifications soon, if GSOE is being pushed back after Wolverine 3 ?

Oh NO!! Hugh has dropped out of COLLATERAL BEAUTY! deadline.com/2015/07/hugh-jackman-johnny-depp-rooney-mara-collateral-beauty-palmstar-anonymous-content-1201473379/A great pity! Collateral Beauty had such a great script and a potential Christmas classic! Unfortunately, it is a project that has to be filmed during the holiday season in NYC because of the setting and the timeline in the story. But Hugh must have the best reasons for leaving the project. Is it really his commitment for WOLVERINE 3 which is behind it? I thought filming for that won't be ready until February 2016. Are they ready to film that now? Hmmm... I hope it is for another project -- GREATEST SHOWMAN ON EARTH -- which we have not heard of for sometime now. Or maybe film WOLVERINE 3 now, if they are ready...and then shoot GREATEST SHOWMAN right after, so it can still make its Christmas Day 2016 release. We'll see. Jo

I just saw this too! I have to say I am so disappointed. This was the kind of film role I was hoping he would do. I didn't think Wolverine was filming until 2016....don't get it

This is terrible! Is he crazy? Doesn't he have enough clout to change the WOLVERINE schedule? This is a bad decision. Depp will get it and win an Oscar.
This is more disappointing than not doing CAROUSEL.

I agree....I had hopes this would be the film that might (to the general public unfamiliar with all of his work) give him a dimension other than the "action/musical" guy that most people identify him as.

I WONDER....Is this really Hugh's decision, or did the director want Depp instead?

Reportedly they're still trying to get Depp on board in the wake of Hugh's dropping out, so I don't think Depp was their first choice. I'm so deeply disappointed. CB could have been the game changer for Hugh, his segue into more important, serious roles in his post-Wolvie career. Depp should thank him for resurrecting his career when JD clutches that statuette come spring 2017. . I'm disgusted. I only hope GREATEST SHOWMAN and APOSTLE PAUL are still on tap. Even if they are, neither is likely to head the Black List as CB did. Ellen

Hmmm... to be honest, having read the script of Collateral Beauty, I thought it was a project that could win hearts ( yes, because it is a whimsical Christmas story...could become a classic)...and maybe box office glory, if done right...but I am not sure it is a surefire awards-winner for the role that Hugh was supposed to portray. The role has the most dramatic arc ( from the domino-playing depressed ad executive to someone who is not exactly trying to put himself together again but is being challenged along the way) but the storyline seems more like an ensemble movie ( like PRISONERS), with other strong character pieces. The lead role does not seem like something that could elicit an eye-popping powerhouse performance, honestly-speaking. Scriptshadow reviewed it and its reaction was only so-so and the reviewer was actually batting more for the character to be played by Jason Segal. He was only impressed with the powerful ending. Of course, if it brings the limelight back on Johnny Depp ( who is not exactly a critic's favorite at the moment...and has even been box office poison, save for Pirates and Alice), then so be it!
There must be more than meets the eye on what has happened ( why Hugh is dropping out)...I hope it is for the better.

Sorry to disagree - people are already aware of his versatility in film. The most recent one was PRISONERS ( those who did not see it on the big screen have tweeted very positively about the cable TV run). THE PRESTIGE is another dramatic triumph (and is viewed as the favorite movie role of Hugh Jackman on the IMDB MOVIE AWARDS Board, followed by Les Miserables). And so was THE FOUNTAIN ( that may not have been seen by many but it has now achieved cult status ( including wide praise for his dramatic performance)...and hey, he has also touched hearts with movies considered as family entertainment such as REAL STEEL and hopefully, as one blogger puts it, he may be PAN's major hope for success at the box office because of his amazing performance as Blackbeard. And don't forget - his performance in KATE AND LEOPOLD ( which is having reruns on cable tv lately) has brought many ( feminine) hearts to his side Hugh is already widely viewed by many as a very versatile actor! I wonder, too, if Hugh is being asked to do a back-breaking promotion schedule for PAN? The movie opens in the second week of October and unfortunately, the buzz for the movie has not been strong. One blogger did say that the Blackbeard character and Hugh Jackman may be the saving factor. So, Hugh could very well be heavily involved not just in the media junkets ( this type of events are no longer just confined to the USA but have become staples in key cities in the world, too) plus the possibility of world premieres also in key cities in the globe. Peter Pan is loved worldwide, so maybe a strong worldwide promotion could renew the interest and help the movie a lot! This should happen in the second half of September and well into the first two weeks of October. Hugh was not generally available in the set visits because he was filming then. Collateral Beauty was slated to start filming in September. It is rumored that the production budget for PAN was $ 150 million -- Warner Bros cannot afford that kind of money to go down the drain if they don't make a huge effort to market and promote the movie. And Hugh will likely be at the forefront of it! Just a thought Jo

You're right, Jo, but I guess it just seems to me that a lot of the so-called "small but prestigious (aka award-worthy)" roles seem to be taken by others these days. Sorry to disagree - people are already aware of his versatility in film. That's true -- but awards are very political, too. I do remember the politicking during the time when Les Miserables was part of the season. It threw me off from the respect/almost awe that I had for the Oscars It's interesting to note that according to a survey a few years back, the majority of Oscar voters are white, male, over 60 years old, a demographic that the Board at Ampas is trying to spread out further. It looks like their flavor of the past seasons has been Bradley Cooper with three successive nods. No love for Hugh's dramatic turn in PRISONERS. During the campaign for Les Miserables, it wasn't just what I read and talked about with other Les Mis fans -- but on IMDB we were joined by people who had inside info ( one was on the nominating committee for the SAG awards ( the SAG also carries a lot of influence in the Oscar voting because it does have the greatest number of Oscar voters), and another had both parents who were both Ampas/Oscar and BAFTA voters. We even had the Sound Director for Les Miserables joining us for a few posts ( he actually won an Oscar for Sound Mixing)... Lol- some of the things they shared were eye-openers ( such as a veritable Meryl Streep fan club within AMPAS who would vote for her in whatever she does - LOL). Those inside-info posters on IMDB were cheering for Hugh and Les Miserables -- but look at how it turned out. Russell Crowe had tweeted ( it was removed later on, probably at the advice of Ampas) that he voted for Hugh because of "the character arc and the degree of difficulty" for the Valjean role... and I don't think it was because they were mates. Russell can be very blunt! smiley-rolleyes010 I guess Universal should have arranged for Hugh to be on the cover of Time ( "greatest actor of his generation" such as the cover issue on DDL) and a WhiteHouse screening, all spearheaded by Spielberg...ditto for the Weinstein-charge for Silver Linings Playbook ( also, a White House screening because somebody thought mental health should be highlighted...but not of course the plight of the very poor and oppressed...how ironic that the Occupy-movement happened also close to this time, which is what real life was more about ). Harvey Weinstein became quite talked about in a negative manner for his supposed ways of securing nods or wins for his movies ( including Meryl's Thatcher movie and Silver Linings Playbook)... The negative vibe against Tom Hooper was also very strong - how dare he win for King's Speech when Social Network should have been it?? The AMPAS did not even give him a nod for his remarkable directorial job in Les Miserables. But the Directors Guild rectified that by voting him as one of 5 top directors of the year, an honor given by his peers! Affleck won for ARGO, presumably because he lost out on a nomination for director. But are people still talking about ARGO these days? Or about Affleck as a topnotch director ( more like Affleck as a costume-suited Batman, in BvS, the new term for Batman vs Superman, according to fanboys)? Even DDL's Lincoln's portrayal does not get much mileage anymore. Yet people continue to talk about Hugh's Les Miserables portrayal...C'est la vie. Last year, how can anyone not give it to Eddie Redmayne - I think it was more of a celebration of a great human being, Stephen Hawking, more than anything else! Biopics do get a lot of attention. I have read the script of Collateral Beauty three times! It is a fable, a whimsical and fantasy story that happens in New York at Christmastime. It will likely win the hearts of many because of its theme and setting -- but the script is great because of the storyline. It is more of an ensemble type of movie ( like PRISONERS) with other strong character pieces. If you have a chance to read it -- you might even mistake the character of Whit ( likely to be played by Jason Segal if he has signed up) as the possible role for Hugh and not the Howard role that was actually meant for him. The role has some sort of a dramatic arc -- but not a role that calls for powerhouse acting. It is relatively passive, except for one dramatic scene. It is not a role meant for Hugh alone. I wouldn't trade his roles in Les Miserables, The Fountain, The Prestige, Prisoners or even The Wolverine for it. It is the storyline which is the star of the script. it is whimsical! And it happens where the suspension of the state of disbelief is a common occurrence. It is a feel-good story at the end. Although not all were enchanted with it, the script itself is expected to be high on the Black List. There will be other projects for Hugh. I am sure he had his reasons for dropping out of it. It would have been nice if they waited for him next year ( it has to be filmed towards late fall into Christmas). But it was not meant to be! Given his talent, his award will come! But if not, what is important is that he has given us his best! Jo

Come to think of it -- Hugh dropped out of Prisoners, too. He had already shared with the staff at A Steady Rain that he was filming it in Connecticut...but then he suddenly left the project ( early 2010) and that was with another director in tow...He came back in 2012 after the project was shopped around for the lead ( DiCaprio, Wahlberg, Bale, etc, if I recall right) and had gotten Denis Villeneuve to direct it. Who knows - if the producers decide to wait for another year -- there just be might another chance for Hugh in the role Jo
