Something's not adding up smiley-rolleyes010
James Mangold replied to a tweet on July 7, as follows --
So, is it just the physical preparation for Wolverine 3 the reason as to why Hugh is dropping off Collateral Beauty? He prepared for The Wolverine while fllming Les Miserables...and he started Les Miserables with deliberate weight loss to portray the early convict scenes. From my recollection he was able to gain 30 lbs of mostly muscle by the time he completed Les Miserables filming. He took a break with the family in Bali...and went to work on The Wolverine right away.
In Collateral Beauty, he does not take off his shirt -- so he could very well hide the weight-gaining process as filming continues ( filming will be done in NYC...and Dogpound can be around). In Les Miserables, he hid the weight buildup under the costume of M. Le Maire.
Is Hugh just more cautious about his health now...but he knew this was goig to happen ( the weight buildup) when he signed up for COLLATERAL BEAUTY in May as Mangold had already confirmed then that Wolverine 3 is scheduled for filming in 2016?
Could there be another reason altogether???
Hmmm...

Was just going to post this (after an exhausting late afternoon & evening on a shut-down NJ Turnpike!). What's going on with that movie? First Hugh, then Depp, now Smith? It's a revolving door.

First, it could be a real scheduling issue. The producers and probably the director are gungho to start filming as soon as possible ( there has already been news of a 2016 release date). One consideration is the time and setting of the story ( there is only a limited window to film the outdoor scenes).
*Hugh may want to have more time for the lead up to Wolverine 3 ( longer physical preparation for him, more time to think through the storyline and characters, focus on how the movie in a way can also become a tribute to Wolverine fans). A side issue could be his involvement as co-producer on the pre-production for GREATEST SHOWMAN ON EARTH, of which we have not heard of for sometime now. I am hoping that Hugh will be doing back-to-back filming for Wolverine 3 and GSOE.
*Johnny is probably still winding up his last PIRATES filming ( in Australia) and it seems there is some gossip re in his personal life. He may not be really available.
*Maybe the schedule fits Will Smith better ?
But it is interesting that the casting has focused on undoubted A-listers! Hugh, Johnny, and Will - all are box office attractions, each with a unique appeal to movie audiences.
Personally, I do not think the lead role itself (which is quite unusual and actually interesting in itself) calls for awards-bait acting. What makes the script very interesting is because all happens in a fantasy-like atmosphere, suffused with two different aspects of New York life -- the high-octane finance and business scene...and the whimsical world of the theatre! Plus there is the miracle of Christmas! The lead role is a sympathetic role, because of the circumstances, but his story is not the only one that deserves second chances. It is an excellent opportunity for ensemble acting showcase though.
We'll see!

Johnny Depp recently married his new girlfriend. What other gossip is there?

Interesting comments on the feedback section of DEADLINE ( which reported the scoop) -- deadline.com/2015/08/will-smith-collateral-beauty-movie-1201491900/#commentsLikewise, from the feedback section of Slashfilm.com -- LOL! It is not just a teeny indie film ...although maybe this poster does not know how well-connected Patrick Whitesell is The hot script was shopped around in Cannes - where it was supposedly bought for $ 2.25-$2.5 million! Hugh Jackman's name was used as the attached actor, in Cannes. That means Hugh is already known not only for box office appeal but also for his versatility ( that he is not just Wolverine). It will be a BIG set -- New York City at Christmas time ( Rockefeller Center) and also that district known as "Theatre" Some think that because it is a story about depression, that it is going to be melodramatic ( like similar films about depression)...er, that might not be the case. Had they waited for Hugh, he woud probably be the best one suited for the lead character, compared to Johnny Depp or Will Smith. Jo

Reportedly they're still trying to get Depp on board in the wake of Hugh's dropping out, so I don't think Depp was their first choice. I'm so deeply disappointed. CB could have been the game changer for Hugh, his segue into more important, serious roles in his post-Wolvie career. Depp should thank him for resurrecting his career when JD clutches that statuette come spring 2017. . I'm disgusted. I only hope GREATEST SHOWMAN and APOSTLE PAUL are still on tap. Even if they are, neither is likely to head the Black List as CB did. Ellen I think it was the kind I like to see but not very deep movie why do u think I'd would get an Oscar?Hj did the best movie a few times and hasn't received it!best movie in my eyes!

It was a very moving script and on the Black List of the best scripts. How often does he get first crack at such? Just venting my frustration.

PRISONERS by Aaron Guzikowski was on the Black List...and so was PAN by Jason Fuchs.
The 2015 Black List has not been released because there is still a long way to go for the rest of the year...and the producers have not done any ratings yet. It was Scriptshadow which was speculating that it would certainly make the Black List ( and in the higher rungs) although Scriptshadow was not that impressed with it. Scriptshadow website owner and chief reviewer Carson Reeves only gave it a middling rating ( "Worth the read") and not the more spectacular ratings of " Impressive" and "Genius".
Here's the rating scale for Scriptshadow, as applied to Collateral Beauty --

In 2006, there were two other films that made the Black List, which were eventually produced as movies -- *The Prestige *XMen Origins: Wolverine en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_List_(survey)#2005_Black_ListThe list is limited to screenplays voted in the Black List which have been produced as of current reporting. There is new topic on Scriptshadow re SPEC SCRIPTS, where Carson Reeves discusses what is happening to spec scripts. scriptshadow.net/The article tries to show why recent spec scripts have not translated into very successful movies. Btw, here is a definition of a spec script ==
On the feedback section for the Reeves Scriptshadow article, there is some discussion on COLLATERAL BEAUTY -- One of the comments say that is really the producers fault when a highly-rated spec script does not turn out into a critical and/or commercial success. If only the producers of Collateral Beauty had waited for Hugh Unless Hugh dropped out due to creative differences?? Jo

One of the spec scripts/movie which was cited as an example of a failure was CHAPPIE --
So, was it the choice of director ( Neil Blomkamp who directed both CHAPPIE and ELYSIUM)...should the producers have chosen someone else?

Somewhere among the comments, I picked up the case of SERENA. It starred Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper and was released on a limited basis in March 2015. It has not been released overseas. It went basically direct to VOD. Can you believe it only made less than $ 200 thousand ( and I thought The Fountain already did badly with its domestic total of $ 10 million/overseas total of $ 6 million and DVD sales of $10 million smiley-rolleyes010 )? It was rated "R" but R-rated movies can be both critical and commercial successes in some cases. www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=serena.htmSERENA was on the Black List for the year 2010 ( along with ARGO).archive.entertainmentwise.com/news/166447/jennifer-lawrences-serena-goes-straight-to-dvd

I'm guessing Hugh's passion for his stage shows trumped (not a reference to The Donald) his interest in the film.

If what Hugh has said about wanting to do the stage shows towards the yearend as a secret priority for him - you're probably right, Ellen. But I also think that when both Hugh and Rooney signed up before the Cannes deal was made, that both did not expect the project to start filming right away. Probably a matter of scheduling?
Btw, The Donald and daughter Ivanka both attended Back on Broadway, on separate occasions. I remember seeing Ivanka coming out of the stage door after one performance. Ivanka was also at the opening night for The River.
