Yes, Jo. I learned the other day that Hugh is scheduled to be on Fallon Feb. 22. I wonder if he'll also be on Kelly and Michael that same day, as in the past.

What I'd really like is for him to host SNL again. It's been just over 14 years, for crying out loud! Too long a break. (I don't count his Daniel Radcliffe bit, cute as it was.)

I saw a free screening of this tonight. I went in with relatively low expectations and while it wasn't terrible, it's not very good either. The story (a British ski jumper who has never skied before sets out to try to go to the 1988 Winter Olympics) is interesting, but the film is very banal and predictable. Nothing in it deviates, even slightly, from the typical sports movie formula. The acting was mixed across the board: Taron Egerton was decent, but Hugh Jackman was pretty meh and Christopher Walken was completely underused. The script was a bit of a mess and relied too much on dumb and/or repetitive one-liners. I can say that I did enjoy the scenery and the cinematography during the ski jumping scenes, however.

While not a terrible film, it's not worth paying to see in theaters in my opinion.

Wow. I had the exact opposite reaction. I really liked this flick. Yeah, it's basically a formulaic sports movie at its heart, but it falls more into the camp of a Rocky(the original) or Rudy or even The Replacements. It's not about winning a game or title or championship(because Eddie definitely doesn't get the gold medal). It's about the character proving something to himself and never giving up. Cliched, yes. But it still works if you do it right.

The performances were all solid. Taron Egerton was almost unrecognizable in the title role. I've only seen him in one other movie(Kingsman), but he looked absolutely nothing like Eggsy. This guy's definitely got some range. Hugh Jackman is basically in Logan mode in this movie with his accent, facial hair, blue jeans, and constant drinking and smoking. Although the filmmakers threw a nice curveball when he picks a fight with someone and it doesn't quite go the way you expect. The rest of the cast all had minor roles, but they're effective in their limited screentime. Don't expect much out of Christopher Walken though. He's in the movie for maybe 2 minutes.

What I also appreciated was that it never got cheesy or sentimental. Even a raunchy, slapsticky sports comedy like Major League had the sappy final scene after they win the pennant. Eddie the Eagle never falls into that trap. It just tells its story without ever trying to manipulate the audience. I also dug the 80's inspired score since the movie was set in 1987-88. That was a nice touch.

Now should you pay to see this in theaters? If you like sports movies, I think this is an easy recommendation. If you like Hugh Jackman, you'll definitely enjoy this. But if you've watched the trailer(which does pretty much sum up the basic plot of the film) and it did nothing for you, then it's probably something you should wait to watch on Blu-ray or Netflix(or cable in 2 1/2 years).

It looks like the musical score for EDDIE THE EAGLE will become part of a new pop album with Gary Barlow ( of TAKE THAT) and other pop stars of that era. Hope he releases the solo that is supposed to be especially written for EDDIE THE EAGLE. If I recall right, it was supposed to be called THRILL ME.

If you enjoy stories about underdogs chasing after their dreams, no matter what, then you’ll love this movie! I must say that watching Eddie the Eagle at an advance screening was a very pleasant surprised. I actually didn’t know what to expect of it and I left the theater with a big smile on my face.

Based on real events, Eddie the Eagle follows the life of Eddie Edwards (Taron Egerton, amazing), who dreams of going to the Olympics since he was a child but completely lacked the ability for any sports. His problem with his left leg also didn’t help much, but he was able to recover from it and kept on dreaming until he decided to go to the Winter Olympics in Calgary, 1988, doing ski jumping (Great Britain didn’t have a ski jumping team, but that didn’t stop him from trying to be on it). After a few trials and falls, he eventually meets an unorthodox coach (Hugh Jackman), who reluctantly decides to help him.

He doesn’t have the support from anyone but his mother, he’s mocked by everyone else and is rejected by the British Olympic Committee, yet he doesn’t give up on his dream of being an Olympian. Described like that I know I’m giving the impression that it’s a drama, but surprisingly enough, it’s not! It’s a lovely comedy and credit is due to Taron Egerton’s great timing and performance. He transformed himself into Eddie and his naiveté seemed genuine.

I also loved the music score! It gave great passing to the film and we never feel that it is somehow slow or too long. We were clapping at more than one scene and cheering every time Eddie would climb up to jump.

Eddie the Eagle shows that is possible to make a film about someone struggling to get approval from everyone else without being annoying (something that Joy wasn’t able to achieve, in my opinion). Just go see it and I’m sure you’ll be cheering for Eddie too!

He soared like a brick into the hearts of Olympic fans across the world. Eddie Edwards, a comically inept British ski jumper didn't come close to winning any medals in the 1988 Calgary Games. In fact, he finished dead last in both the 70- and 90-meter jumps.

He did, however, win a large amount of fame and a small fortune thanks to his complete lack of skill and lovably goofy look. Sarcastically nicknamed "the Eagle," he dropped into the public consciousness and was easily the most popular athlete to compete that year.

The doughy, bespectacled former plasterer with the silly grin parlayed his 15 minutes of fame into a $65,000 deal to tell his life story to a tabloid and—no joke—a number-two song ("Mun Niemi En Eetu" or "My Name is Eddie") in Finland in 1991.

Even IOC president Juan Antonio Samaranch, though privately critical of Edwards for appearing to mock the Games with his fish-out-of-water performance, seemed to embrace him during his speech at the closing ceremonies.

"[At Calgary] people set new goals, created new world records, and some even flew like an eagle," he said to raucous applause.

Despite the kind words, the IOC subsequently instituted what is known as the Eddie the Eagle Rule, which requires Olympic hopefuls to finish in the top third of an international competition, or among the top 50 competitors, whichever is less. This effectively eliminated Edwards from future Games.

The eagle returned to his nest, Calgary, in 2008 during the 20-year anniversary of the Games. And he will "fly" once more in 2010 as one of 15 special international torchbearers. Spectators who cheered him on in 1998 may not recognize Eddie the Eagle-his trademark thick glasses are gone thanks to corrective surgery, and his jaw has been realigned due to repeated breaks caused by jumps gone wrong. But Eddie's Olympic spirit remains intact and will be on display as he carries the torch through Winnepeg in January.

It is the triumph of the human spirit which is being celebrated, which is probably the greater accomplishment than just the feat of winning medals ( although that is also probably not going to happen if the athlete did not have the heart and the determination of a champion)!

Maybe not an EDDIE THE EAGLE premiere -- SUNDANCE is meant for indies -- this is a Matthew Vaughn film company project and will be on wide release by FOX. I am hoping it will be a more glittering USA premiere ( maybe in Hollywood or NYC) for this movie!

It is likely that it will also have a London premiere because it is a British film and it focuses on a once-popular Brit personality in the aftermath of the 1988 Winter Olympics.


Maybe he won't be at Sundance after all ? He is supposed to be in LA no later than Jan 28 for G'DAY USA and the following day for the ELLEN DEGENERES show ( although that could also be pre-taped earlier).

Given that the RIO Olympics (summer games) this year will not happen until August, I wonder why Fox decided to push forward the release of EDDIE THE EAGLE from April 1 to February 26. Was it to avoid the summer rush of blockbusters ( some appearing in late March) or it is to put it in a better context by releasing it in the winter months. Given memories of the blizzard of 2016, maybe it was unexpected foresight?

EXCLUSIVE: I’m hearing that Eddie The Eagle will be the top secret screening tomorrow at the Library Theater. The Dexter Fletcher-directed film stars Kingsman: The Sectret Service‘s Taron Egerton as Eddie Edwards in the story of Great Britain’s first ski jumper to compete in the Winter Olympics. Hugh Jackman co-stars as his coach Bronson Peary, and Matthew Vaughn’s MARV Films produced. Fox will release the film February 26. So, beyond the custom fit of a ski jump picture in the snowy mountains here, the release date lends itself to a buzz-building early Sundance showcase. Nobody was commenting, but trust me, the eagle will land here tomorrow.

Btw, the Library Theatre holds only 300 people - so tickets will sell out fast! There will be a premiere on the same day of Matt Damon's Manchester by the Sea ( Matt and Hugh starred together at the closing show of TBFO ) but Matt has already arrived earlier. (EDIT: There are two theatres which include LIBRARY in its name - the other is a 486-seater. No announcement yet as to which one will host the screening)




Hugh and Taron will be the surprise Sundance sensation. Who knows - it might even win the festival prize - if it is competing ( although the competition may only be for indies?). Last year's winner was ME AND EARL AND THE DYING GIRL ( remember the movie where there was a photo/voice cameo from Wolverine/Hugh?).

I wonder if they had planned this all along- hence the February 26 release date in the USA. Where else would it premiere except in the snowy mountains of Sundance <cool>
