"s6hree" has been banned *FOREVER* for plastering a slew of incoherent "cheap hats" advertisements (with URL links to a variety of other sites) all over this board last night.
[If you're curious, Google "s6hree" and you will find similar posts ALL over the internet - different sex, age, email, etc. - but all with the same name. My guess is a cyber version of "boiler room" telemarketing - and that he must use the same name to get "credit" for his posts.]
Luckily, I happened to be online as this lunacy was occurring and deleted his multiple new threads as they appeared. No, he didn't get a warning or a polite PM from me. I did post one rather profane reply on one of his threads (because new ones were popping up quicker than I could remove them) - and then he stopped, and then I banned him. It was my personal decision that he did not deserve a second chance. I will assume that this was "one time only" Troll activity by someone with no interest in this Forum who took advantage of the fact that I have not set any restrictions on posting here.
"NO advertising" has been added to The Rules.
If you see any similar activity in the future, please PM me immediately.

The "cheap hats" thing was annoying. Asian "escorts" - complete with phone numbers and half-nude photos - is WAY over the line, ...and probably far off target here as well.
There are a number of options open to us that I can control. I'd like to hear your thoughts on what we should do.
Nothing - well, not exactly "nothing" but maintain the status quo - delete individual unwanted posts as they occur; BAN the offender
Guests Must Login - Anyone coming to view our Board would get a log-in screen, and nothing else. They would have to "join" in order to see anything here. [This seems ineffective, since our Trolls have shown no hesitation about joining this Board.]
Limited Registration - all new accounts must be approved by me before their account becomes active.
Disable Signups - Only ADMIN would have the power to register members and create new accounts. In other words, people who want to join would have to know how to contact me directly , make a "Request to Join" post in the GENERAL area as a Guest (and then I'd need some way to contact them - not quite sure how that would work) or be "recommended" by a current member. [This seems a tad too restrictive to me. A lot of us know each other already, but I don't see any reason to "outlaw" other fans just because we're not acquainted. I'm glad we kept "The Old Gang" together, but I also welcome all *genuine* Newbies who share our interests.]
There are a lot of controllable variables within the many sub-sets of this Forum.
I can impose limits on who can see, reply or start new threads in individual Categories
[our "Categories" are the MAIN sections - General, HJ, TBFO, PA, B'way, OT]
I can impose similar limits on individual Boards
[The HJ "Category" has six individual "Boards"]
Right now the GENERAL area (where the Trolls have *not* posted) is open in all ways to anyone who comes here whether they are Registered Members or Guests.
All other CATEGORIES can be *seen* by anyone, but only Registered Members can post replies or start new threads.
Since I am the Administrator I never had to do anything to "join" this Board. Once you fill in a registration form, do you have to receive and acknowledge an email to access the site, or are you just "in" as soon as you register?
Please let me know how you feel about all this. This is not my own private island, this is *your* Forum. What would you like to do? "Guest" ("Lurker") comments are welcome, but Member opinions obviously carry more weight.

Pretty sure that once I joined I was "in".
I think you will probably just have to do "nothing" and ban people that are trolls etc. when they show up (this is usually obvious right away isn't it?)
I would limit the main board topics, but let anyone who is registered start a thread (of course you could combine similar threads that appear)

I'd say if it ain't broke don't fix it. You're doing a fine job so I would choose option #1 Nothing!
I've been doing the "50 most recent posts" option when I come on in the morning which I find works very much like my old daily email digest worked on the other board. You must be very quick on the trigger because I actually haven't seen any of the offensive posts. I often pop in later in the day for a quick look-see and still didn't see any of the bad stuff.
As for the sign up routine...I honestly don't remember for sure but I may have had to click on an email confirmation link. :-/

Valerie, I agree with the "do nothing" option where you zap the offenders as soon as they come to your attention. If, however, these trolls increase in frequency or number, you may want to consider other options.
Screening those who want to join would be difficult. You're right - you would have no way of knowing what their intent or agenda might be, and I doubt that they would hesitate to lie about it.
If I remember correctly, as soon as I registered, I was a member of the forum.
Thanks again for doing this. I hope it doesn't get to be too much of a headache!

"Too quick" isn't quick enough for me. I believe these trolls get some sort of "credit" for spamming message boards, so I want them gone ASAP. They're just posting links to advertisements - baseball caps, T-shirts, light bulbs... and, of course, Asian escort services - NONE of which have anything to do with what this Forum is all about.
