When I saw the original CATS production, I was less impressed with it compared to all the other ALWebber musicals that I have seen. I think I got bored watching it ... But after I was able to listen to the cast recording and having had a chance to read some of the lyrics ( actually, they are poems by British poet T.S.Eliot), I thought it was very whimsical ( and may actually be enjoyable).
The musical is being revived on Broadway and is now on previews.
Here is a very insightful post by a BWW member ( Blaxx) on the show --
He is very intuitive on the intention of this show. I wish I had the same perspective when I first saw the show. There will be revisions and the choreography will only be inspired by the award-winning work of Gillian Lynn...but I still have my memories of the original production, now seen in a different light. ALWebber did release a filmed version of one of the productions ( London, with Elaine Paige in her original role of Grizzabela) and I might have a copy.
Btw, TBFO alumnus Tyler Hanes plays the role of Rum Tum Tugger!

This is the musical that most people forget where it came from when their hate comes out.
It really is not about cats, and it amazes me when this fact is ignored.
The animal used here serves as the means for the poet as an analogy of traits to analyze the humans of his time; their professions, status, behaviors and how they are perceived and were treated by others.
This is more performance art than theater, it is a modern cantata. But the hype really seems to have some audiences taken the show at face value. This is sad in my opinion, I wish more collections of poetic works could have some sort of narrative and performed to music, if not song and dance. Up until today, I can't think there is any other musical like it in structure and presentation.
I wonder if within our lifetime we will see another musical based on poetry that is as successful as this one.
The work may seems simple but I like how much it represents modern arts in performance. It will always seem innovative to me.
