I think this was at the film premiere on that island near Manhattan where they filmed some of the scenes. Note that Hugh and Patrick seem to have coordinated their clothes. Was this a sign that these two actors would end their XMen film careers together in LOGAN?

This part of the Q&A seems relevant to LOGAN and superhero movies --

The blog you maintain on the American Society of Cinematographers website, “John’s Bailiwick,” is a unique window into an Academy president’s mind. And there are some very outspoken correspondences there. One post where you decried “the mindless recycling of vacuous action movies” stuck out in particular. Do you think you’ll be able to maintain that kind of a public-facing exchange in your new role?



I think around the time Oliver Stone came out with “Natural Born Killers,” which was by far the most violent movie I had ever seen and for me even more shocking because it was so sophisticated and so well done, I wrote a piece that was then put into an anthology called “Bang Bang Bang Bang Ad Nauseum,” and I basically attacked what I thought was a developing aesthetic of ultra-violence in studio films. And on a personal level I still feel the same way. I have my own personal feelings about the kind of movies I’m interested in, but I’m also well aware of what feeds the studio coffers. People have every right to see the movies they want to. As Academy president I certainly have no perspective or agenda, but that doesn’t prevent me as John Bailey, a filmmaker, from talking about what matters to me in films.

The blog is what I write as John Bailey, ASC. The Academy has nothing to do with it. I wouldn’t expect anybody at the Academy would want me to deal otherwise with that. I do not engage in any kind of larger issues regarding the politics or the business of the Hollywood industry. I’m interested in writing about the arts. And as you know, I write about a lot more than movies. Most of my blogs are about still photography. I love opera. I’ve written pieces about Alban Berg’s “Lulu” and the recent Met premiere of the Finnish composer Kaija Saariaho, her new opera “Love From Afar.” I have very eclectic taste.

I hope the subject of "diversity" to him does not exclude the concept of acceptance of all film genres, especially for well-made superhero movies with dramatic depth, even if the level of violence calls for a R-rating !

Hugh Jackman: Logan

Although Hugh Jackman has played Wolverine time after time, his performance in Logan was unlike anything we’ve ever seen from him. Jackman completely erased our memory of this character’s previous incarnations, delivering the most vulnerable, empathetic, and human depiction of Wolverine to date. Since it’s a quote unquote comic book movie, a Best Actor nomination may not be in the cards for Jackman. Then again, Heath Ledger won a posthumous Oscar for his performance as the Joker and Al Pacino earned a nomination for his work as Big Boy in Dick Tracy. One can only hope that Jackman will join this exclusive club for his final outing as Logan.

If the AMPAS is now pursuing inclusivity, why should they exclude from consideration a film worthy of critics and consumers and filled with drama, action, and excellent acting display?

Twentieth Century Fox has a trio of prestige plays in store. For the holidays, Hugh Jackman stars as P.T. Barnum in Michael Gracey’s “The Greatest Showman,” though that could register more as a family film than an awards juggernaut.

It’s quite the diverse portfolio. Though it will be interesting to see what kind of conversation the studio can rekindle around James Mangold’s “Logan,” which hit theaters less than a week after the 89th Oscars rolled up the red carpet. The gritty neo-Western remains one of the year’s best, with a touching Patrick Stewart performance that deserves serious consideration. Can Academy members give the movie a fair shake, or is the stigma still too great (“The Dark Knight” excepted)?

Speaking of comic book adaptations, some have already speculated about the Oscar chances of Patty Jenkins’ “Wonder Woman,” a rally cry for female filmmakers that won over the critics and set the box office on fire. It’s a tall order, but a commitment worth making; the wheels are already in motion at Warner Bros. to try and bring it back around during the season. But it may ultimately be relegated to the crafts categories, along with the film’s DC stable partner “Justice League,” which lands in the fall. Ditto Marvel’s “Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 2” and “Thor: Ragnarok” (at Disney), and the lovable “Spider-Man: Homecoming” (at Sony)...

Is Fox faced with a dilemma, given that the awards talk seems to be more focused on another Jackman vehicle ( Greatest Showman)? I don't know if the awards speculations for SHOWMAN is being encouraged by Fox for potential box office appeal ( because people who hear that it is a potential Oscar winner may want to check it out while it is on release) ... while LOGAN is already past history when it comes to more box office receipts? That is the cynic in me

Although maybe FOX is keeping its OSCAR campaign under wraps, especially because it has quite a few strong candidates for Oscar honors! It could also have a rare honor to see two movies with Jackman both in titular roles! The sentimental fan in me also wants a signal tribute to Jackman's WOLVERINE legacy of 17 years in the genre, in a farewell movie that has been well-acclaimed by both critics and fans! On the other hand, the musical theatre fan in me wants to see Jackman in full triple-threat display of talent in SHOWMAN!

But if I were FOX, if they launch a BEST ACTOR for-consideration-campaign for HUGH JACKMAN, I would focus on his overall talent and versatility not in one film alone but across genres! It is about time they recognize an actor not just for one specific movie but for his body of work! It is rare that one actor could be hailed for two films ( in diametrically opposite genres) in one Oscar season!

Personally, I would also focus on what he has done for the AMPAS itself ( the 2009 Oscar hosting) and the AMPAS members ( relatedly, his MPTF participation on Jim Gianopulos annual charity events for members of the Motion Pictures and Television Fund) ... That is, if I were FOX

I did not want to mention it previously, but I preferred Hugh's more restrained acting than the over-the-top portrayal by Patrick. I wonder if, like other XMen fans, the regard for Patrick's extreme changeover from the previous more aristocratic portrayal of Prof Charles Xavier was more of a lament for what he was before? Hugh's portrayal was more quietly tortured but aggressively provoked in trying circumstances ( including his initial relationship with Laura)...and almost distressed as he realized what X-24 represented. It was a performance that was more layered, more nuanced! It was more distressful to watch!

I like your wish that the Academy might want to honor Hugh for both performances (picking one for the actual award) in addition to his charity work for MPTF, but do the voters ever do that? How many actually see all the films? The older more traditional voters are usually sent screeners for consideration. Does this also put the responsibility on FOX to campaign for noms when films have been released earlier in the year? It's hard to predict what might happen. Strategic marketing can also be a factor.

In the past, The Dark Knight actually arranged a short screening period for a re-release of THE DARK KNIGHT by Warner Bros. during the awards season. If they are talking of an aggressive campaign for WONDER WOMAN, maybe WB might do the same?

Also, the producers of BEAUTY AND THE BEAST has already announced that they will mount an aggressive campaign for the movie ( probably bearing in mind the below-the-line OSCAR consideration and for major awards for GOLDEN GLOBE consideration).

Will screeners do?

I remember watching LOGAN for the first time in a special cinema but not IMAX. When I saw it on IMAX, it was such a marked changed ( as if I were part of the onlookers inside the film)...so the third time I went to see it, I made sure it was also on IMAX. All I am saying is that there is a marked difference between seeing it on a big screen compared to a computer or a TV set ( for screeners). If there is a re-release, they can also feature a Q&A for the movie.


The advantage for the Hugh Jackman films ( LOGAN, included) vis-à-vis WONDER WOMAN and BEAUTY AND THE BEAST, and even early release GET OUT) is that Hugh will likely be very actively promoting THE GREATEST SHOWMAN right before the nominations for Oscars ( January 23) and Golden Globes ( December 7) are announced. If there is a lot of media interviews, there are strong possibilities that Hugh may be asked to compare his two movies released during the year...or for actual print interviews to cite both portrayals. LOGAN already has the advantage of strong reviews ( 93% at Rotten Tomatoes) and very strong box office results ( $ 616 million worldwide). And the comparison between two portrayals is quite an excellent topic ( that is, assuming he also gets raves for his GREATEST SHOWMAN performance).

Hope this is not all wishful thinking

As the Venice-Telluride-Toronto film festival corridor begins to churn out something resembling an Oscar season beat sheet, a handful of earlier 2017 releases are speaking up, lest they be lost in the fall prestige clutter.


Wednesday night, 20th Century Fox will hold a screening of James Mangold’s “Logan” — on the Warner Bros. lot, oddly enough — with Mangold and star Hugh Jackman on hand for a Q&A. The film hit theaters less than a week after last February’s Oscars ceremony and went on to rack up over $616 million in global box office receipts. It also remains one of the year’s most critically acclaimed films.


Chief on the list of possibilities for the film is Patrick Stewart’s supporting performance, saddling up to the role of Professor Charles Xavier for the seventh time (nearly as many times as Jackman has tackled Wolverine). But this is his most emotional rendering of the character yet, and it comes in a film that hasn’t been dismissed as a genre trifle, but rather, one with hard-bitten western DNA that could appeal more than other films in the “X-Men” series have.



Prior to scheduling that event, the gears at Fox were already turning for another of the studio’s genre entries, “War for the Planet of the Apes.” Producer Peter Chernin even hopped on the phone with awards press to discuss plans to keep Matt Reeves’ film in the industry’s eye. “War” hasn’t connected at the box office as much as the studio would have hoped, but it remains one of the year’s best, and you can expect a push for recognition — even of the special achievement sort — for what Andy Serkis and company have accomplished in the performance-capture realm throughout the series.


Finally, a number of journalists were quick to mention on Twitter that they had received the first “awards screener” of the year in the form of Universal’s “Get Out” Blu-ray mailer. In reality, Jordan Peele’s satire — which grossed over $252 million worldwide — was meant to ship months ago timed to the DVD’s street date, but it fell through the cracks for boring reasons that aren’t worth mentioning here. The discs went to members of the Broadcast Film Critics Assn. and Hollywood Foreign Press Assn. this week. Universal is actually keen on getting a jump on things overall, however, as the film is viewed as a serious contender for the studio.


We’ll have to wait a few weeks before we’ll know what the true “first awards screener” of the year will be, i.e. discs that land on actual Academy members’ doorsteps (or inboxes). But in the meantime, these campaigns are doing what they can to stay out ahead of what is sure to be another noisy season. We’ll see how much of a grip they can maintain throughout.

EXCLUSIVE: Just as Toronto, the third leg of the fall festival trifecta, is about to wrap up, we have another tell-tale sign that the six-month-long Oscar season has begun in earnest. Academy campaigners often compete to be the first to send their For Your Consideration screener out, and this year the winner is: Logan.


20th Century Fox, which never has been first in this particular screener derby, already is showing how aggressive they can be as the nascent season ramps up. The DVD screener landed in Academy voters’ mailboxes today. The March release directed and co-written (with Scott Frank and Michael Green) by James Mangold and starring Hugh Jackman and Patrick Stewart marked the end of an X-Men era, at least for Wolverine and Professor X in this acclaimed drama that acted not only as an elegy to those characters but to the Old West, with echoes of classics like Shane in its own way. It is unlike anything that has come before in the series, which is why there isn’t even an X in the title.



Both stars are deserving of awards recognition, and the only question is whether Jackman will push this performance over his upcoming Christmas release, The Greatest Showman, in which he plays P.T. Barnum, which is also from 20th Century Fox. With 93% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes, Logan remains one of the year’s best reviewed movies and easily the best in the entire series of nine films spawned by Marvel’s X-Men comic book franchise. This, however, is no comic book movie — it’s something completely different, and that could make it a contender, particularly if some of the fall films don’t measure up and voters look to earlier in 2017 for cinematic inspiration. Fox certainly never attempted to launch a serious Oscar campaign for any of the other X-Men or Wolverine movies, and being first out with a screener makes a statement. With a March 3 release date, it would be one of those rare titles that managed a Best Picture nomination opening so early in the year. Only Erin Brockovich in 2000 and The Grand Budapest Hotel in 2014, also both March releases, managed that feat this millennium.

Fox already has proved that they’ll be going for the gold with their strongest awards slate in years. In addition to the two Jackman 2017 bookend movies, they have Steven Spielberg’s The Post, starring Meryl Streep and Tom Hanks; The Mountain Between Us, which just premiered in Toronto; and Kenneth Branagh’s all-star Murder on the Orient Express remake; along with the July release War for the Planet of the Apes, which I recently reported would also be getting a major campaign. Voters can expect that screener to follow shortly. Incidentally, though Logan is the first Oscar screener out this year sent directly to Academy members, Universal jumped the gun earlier this week with the commercially released Blu-ray of their smash Get Out, which opened February 24. They sent it to the Hollywood Foreign Press Association and the Broadcast Film Critics Association, neither group requiring special packaging like the Academy does. Unlike most films that open so early in the year, both Logan and Get Out are considered possibilities for nominations. Miles Ahead and Maggie’s Plan were first out last year. Neither received a single nomination, but it’s always good to be on top of the viewing pile, especially when you’re the only one.

And so it all begins, again.

*Ironically, there are two Jackman potential film contenders. Depending on which is perceived by FOX as the better contender, we will likely see that one as the film that will get the more major push of the two Jackman movies! Or will they give each one an equal chance ( assuming GREATEST SHOWMAN turns out to be both a critical and commercial hit as well). This can be tricky at the nomination level so that they will not cancel each other out for Best Picture?

*Presumably, only one performance by Jackman will eventually be pushed for awards glory ( because having two potential nominees for the same actor might cancel each other out) -- but at the nomination stage, pushing both performances, many believe, can only help tremendously in pushing Jackman's chances for Best Actor ( he is likely the only actor this season who will turn out two impressive, award-worthy portrayals in two completely opposite genres -- a superhero movie with dramatic overtones, a biopic musical of an American cultural icon meant to reach a wide swath of the movie-going public! Talent, appeal, and versatility! The same criteria that may very well work the best to put Jackman as an unusual Best Actor candidate if he gets a nomination!

The advantage of being the first screener into the AMPAS members's mailboxes is that it gets reams of publicity, especially on online mass media as well as social media! Also, having been released at least 6 months earlier on the big screen, there would be some curiousity factor in revisiting the movie once again. It also has the benefit of accumulated reviews ( which stands at 93% on Rotten Tomatoes), so watching it can have a preconceived effect on first-time watchers of the movie among AMPAS members. And since the vision and execution of LOGAN as a film is very different from the usual superhero movie, there could be much greater impact to the AMPAS member who will view it for the first time!

Here are the rules for SCREENINGS and SCREENERS --

Screenings.

The Academy encourages the screening of eligible films in a theatrical setting for its members.  
Prior to the announcement of nominations, screenings presented by or funded by film companies may be followed by a Q&A session or similar live participation by persons associated with the film. Additionally, such screenings may be preceded or followed by a reception and complimentary food and beverage.

After nominations are announced, and until the final polls close, Academy members may be invited to a maximum of four screenings of a nominated film that are preceded or followed by filmmaker Q&As. In the UK, a fifth such event will be permitted. All participants in such Q&As other than the moderator must be nominated or have been eligible for nomination.
After nominations are announced, and until the final polls close, no screening event may include a reception or otherwise offer complimentary food or beverages.

After nominations are announced, no Academy member may be listed as a “host” of a screening and no Academy member may serve as moderator for a Q&A, unless that member is directly associated with the film.

These limitations do not apply to official Q&A screenings held by the Academy or the various guilds.

6. Screeners.


While viewing films on screeners is at times more convenient, the Academy remains firmly committed to the principal that motion pictures competing for Academy Awards should be seen and heard in a theatrical setting. We encourage the film companies and our members to present and view the films as they were intended.

Notwithstanding the above, the Academy will not object to the distribution of screeners to Academy members. Screeners may be distributed to members in physical form (e.g. DVD) and digitally via download or streaming.

Film companies may not send members duplicate screeners of the same motion picture. But, one screener of a film may be sent in physical form and an additional one may be sent in digital form.

Screeners may not include any additional print or moving image material, such as information about the making of the movie.
Screeners may include closed captioning and simple menus that allow viewers to select different starting points (chapter stops) and audio formats, although the chapter stop headings in the menu may not include captions.

Members may be given a choice of formats for digitally delivered screeners, so long as the delivery conforms to all other provisions of these Regulations.



7. Packaging of Screeners.

Whether housing single or multiple screeners, elaborate or promotional packaging is not permitted.

The packaging of screeners should be limited to simple sleeves or boxes. Outer packaging on boxes housing multiple screeners must likewise be simple in design.

A film’s basic title treatment may appear on the packaging.

Packaging for individual screeners may carry a list of “for your consideration” credits and a brief, unembellished synopsis. Tag lines, advertising or promotional copy are not permitted.

Packaging for a single screener should be no larger than standard DVD jewel box dimensions (approximately 1/2” thick).
Whether housing single or multiple screeners, elaborate or promotional packaging is not permitted.

Wonder Woman Could Face Oscar Competition From Another Superhero Movie

It has been a topic of conversation for quite some time now. Will a major comic-book property ever contend for an Academy Award? The Oscars made changes to its Best Picture field a few years back, and many believed it was because Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight was shut out of the Academy's top category. This year, some have argued that Patty Jenkins' Wonder Woman belongs in the Awards Race, but WB is not alone in thinking it has a contender, as Fox just sent screeners of James Mangold's Logan to Academy voters.

Logan even earns the distinction of being the first DVD screener sent to Academy voters, per Pete Hammond's reporting over at Deadline. He notes that Fox is being aggressive in its campaign to remind people about the drama, which came out in March (and received across-the-board positive reviews). Bringing a movie back into the spotlight when it has been off the grid for some time presents definite challenges. Some experts have been writing that now is a good time for Universal to start dusting off Get Out again, to give it a possible Oscar run.


I can't begin to tell you how happy I am that Fox is putting its resources behind Logan, and especially Hugh Jackman, for an Oscar push. The final chapter in Wolverine's lengthy on-screen saga, Logan remains one of the best movies I have seen this year -- not "comic book" movie, but just movie, full stop. And Jackman absolutely should see his name in the running for any Best Actor consideration, as his final portrayal of the savage warrior known as Wolverine wears all of the baggage that this hero (and this actor) has collected over the years. It's a marvelous turn that is Oscar-worthy, on every level.

The question becomes, will Hugh Jackman choose to back Logan, or put his weight behind December's The Greatest Showman. The latter might not be an Oscar movie (we haven't seen it yet), but both films are Fox properties, so you know they are coordinating behind their own lines to figure out the best course of action.

Is there room enough in the Oscar race for both Logan and Wonder Woman? I think so. The former is a weightier, more profound conclusion to a larger saga, while Patty Jenkins' DC origin story is one of those populist accomplishments that could help attract precious viewers to the Oscars telecast, where they might tune in to see if a movie they care deeply enough about can prevail over a stuffier arthouse movie that very few have seen.

Either way, the arrival of screeners means that the Oscar race officially is underway, so keep it locked on CinemaBlend for the next six months -- SIX MONTHS -- as we track the marathon that is Awards Season.
