This is a bit selfish -- but I don't see how Wonder Woman beat LOGAN in the same category.
The movie was genre-bending, received an Oscar nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay, and had exceptional portrayals from Hugh, Dafne and Patrick! ( two portrayals of which had been recognized at Empire Awards itself).
Btw, Hugh has always been a special favorite at EMPIRE especially for his Wolverine portrayals. He has graced so many EMPIRE covers in his 19 year-old Hollywood career! He has often received very favorable reviews especially from EMPIRE writer/reviewer Helen O'Hara.

Ironic that this recognition denied him by Gary Oldman's win at the Oscars has now reversed in Hugh's favor! The fans gave Hugh the popular acknowledgment that more than just makeup or mimicry or salute to a national historical figure, a very nuanced and exceptional portrayal in a genre that has been shunned by awards bodies ( but which people love) has been held as the most worthy of recognition! Hugh has given 17 years of his career to defining what kind of cinematic figure Wolverine was, giving film fans a character choice that while inspired by the comicbooks, was truly Hugh's own artistic interpretation and characterization! WOLVERINE or LOGAN or James Howlett -- whichever name he was called didn't matter to fans who loved him most!

The EMPIRE award for Best Actor is via popular vote, giving wide acknowledgement to the tremendous and exceptional acting gift from Hugh Jackman!

At the MTV Awards earlier this season -- Hugh was actually looking at Dafne ( who asked Hugh to introduce her to Emma Watson)

So many new features/blogs lauding either the movie and/or Hugh Jackman's performance as outstanding! Why couldn't it have landed Hugh Jackman an Oscar nomination or even an Oscar win?? Who won the 2018 Oscars for Best Actor -- can't even remember who it was… oops, I think it was Gary Oldman for THE DARKEST HOUR. Is anyone still even talking about that portrayal...or even in any conversation re memorable past Oscars?? www.thisisinsider.com/best-superhero-movie-performances-of-all-time-2018-8#1-hugh-jackman-as-loganwolverine-in-logan-2017-20And Jackman's memorable LOGAN portrayal outranks such iconic performances as Heath Ledger's Oscar winning JOKER and Christopher Reeve's SUPERMAN. That is because Hugh's portrayal is much more layered, much more nuanced...and much more compelling! Jo

This isn't the most well -written article, but it expresses what I guess many of us have been thinking as we see the accolades bestowed on the Joker movie. I suppose LOGAN was just a bit ahead of its time, but certainly paved the way for films to follow, and I really believe it was instrumental in causing many superhero filmmakers to up their game. www.cbr.com/logan-deserved-as-much-oscars-love-as-joker/

LOGAN ( which to me seemed like a continuation of Parts 1 & 2 of The Wolverine, where Logan becomes introspective and searches for his purpose in life) is much more than a superhero movie. It is a character study of an aging man and the dire and sad circumstances he now finds himself in. What resurrects him from his weary outlook for the mentor he loved and his own fate is the sense of family that a young girl brings into their lives! The three characters interacting with each other and the way LOGAN ( the movie) brings them together for the final journey is what won an Oscar nomination for the storyline...and the continuing regard from fans for Hugh Jackman's portrayal ( not a day pass without seeing a tweet or 2 hailing Hugh Jackman for his oustanding character study in the movie).
The AMPAS has a quirky way of recognizing talent. Sometimes they award it not for someone's actual best portrayal but for his body of work ( e.g., Leo DiCaprio)... Sometimes, circumstances make them feel that the actor should be honored (e.g., the death of Heath Ledger...and maybe Elizabeth Taylor near-death illness, for Butterfield 8)... Sometimes they award it because they like a particular actor and has put him on a pedestal no matter what he does ( e.g., DDLewis, Meryl, and even Joaquin Phoenix). Sometimes, they award it because it is an unusual theme ( e.g., the silent-movie acting of Dujardin). Etc...
To me, what this all means in terms of Hugh Jackman lacking that Oscar recognition at this point is that he seems to be paving the way for the eventual recognition of a genre that is not usual awards-attention-getter. He paved the way with LOGAN. He also paved the way for the resurrection of the movie musical genre ( Les Misérables and The Greatest Showman) - Bohemian Rhapsody benefited from that. And how many actors are now finding themselves on a theatrical stage had Hugh Jackman in the recent past not shown the way (that stepping away from the surefire Hollywood limelight is well worth the time spent on another performing medium)
Maybe at this point, the recognition is mostly the growing near-universal awareness that Hugh Jackman is arguably the most versatile talent around...as well as for being artistically-driven enough "to take the road less taken" !

I wonder if this is true? If it is - it is about time that some special recognition to this movie that continues to be ranked among the highest storyline & portrayal ratings ( in terms of critical and audience praise) be given.
