On a day where one of the best tennis matches ever was played and which lasted almost 5 hours, what was hailed as the real winner was SPORTSMANSHIP - a rare thing indeed!

From one of the sports beloved and respected icons -- Rod Laver (such as in Rod Laver Arena in Melbourne, where Hugh has performed for his arena tour and his Broadway-to-Oz). His compliments on the two tennis warriors!
And one of the most sportsmanlike tennis players ever!
And it looks like former Djoko coach Boris Becker ( youngest Wimbledon champion, at age 17) thinks highly of Rafa, too --

As expected, Hugh and Deb were at Opening Night ( a different kind of Opening Night) of the humidity-drenched US OPEN at Flushing Meadow. I wonder which match they came to see http://instagram.com/p/BnAEGoAj6RM I was half-watching the main attraction ( Nadal vs Ferrer) as I was busy with something else -- didn't do any people-watching. Maybe they watched the Serena match? Jo

That looks like co-tennis fan Anna Wintour ( Vogue editor) in front of Hugh.
So, they were at the Nadal match after all!
Hey, Rafa is matching fashion arbiter Anna Wintour's sleeveless summer look on the very humid tennis night.
And a sad way for David Ferrer to play his last US Open Tournament --

Did you see the quarterfinals between Rafa Nadal and Dominic Thiem? Wow! But beyond the athleticism and talent of tennis players is this -- As a tennis fan, I can appreciate the athleticism ( but not the grunting LOL) of these guys. I think Thiem has a great future and like Hugh, Federer is my favourite non Australian player. However, much as I support Federer, it was so exciting when Millman beat him. His "never give up" attitude despite the challenging weather conditions and his humility have won him a whole new fan base. He has become Australia's latest sporting hero and the coverage of his achievments this week has been extensive in the Aus media. The quarter final match against Djokervic was a nail biter, despite the score not reflecting the closeness of the battle. I was half expecting Hugh to be in the stands for these matches, but maybe he had other commitments before heading to Toronto. Surprised though that he hasn't tweeted his congrats and support for Millman.

When he was playing, I thought Millman's body language and expression might be reminiscent of the Kyrgios ilk -- but when he was interviewed after his win over Federer -- he was humble, down-to-earth, and very likable! Personally, that matters a lot to me, apart from the athletic ability. Plus of course the fighting spirit! Even Nole had good words for John M. Hope he succeeds where other Aussie players of late have not been successful. I think he has the right attitude! But tennis is such a competitive sport and it takes a lot to get to the top rungs ( and stay there -- look at the Big Four -- they had all been victims of injuries, but save for Andy who is still trying to recover his form, the other 3 are now back as top-ranked). Roger suffered from the heat but Nole was even more susceptible ( I understand a cardiologist has been called in one of his matches because he was having difficulties with his breathing). The US Open has been such a challenge as the players were combatting not just the opponent across the net but Mother nature. Btw, the grunting is supposed to help in strengthening the strokes ( even the elegant Maria Sharapova does it) … Tennis is no longer the gentlemanly type of sport it used to be in Rod Laver's time. The game has become so much faster and so much more brutal ( the equipment, the surface which changes in character, the balls, the athletic ability and physical regimen of the players, the rules, now the time-clock). Although the Big Four brings something special individually when they play - their trademarks : Roger has his elegant style and his backhand; Rafa has his forehand, fighting spirit and physicality (Rod Laver called him as possibly the greatest athlete (not player), the sport has ever known); Nole has his athleticism and return game ; and Andy is a very strong returner even if he likes to talk to himself ). Of the upcoming -- there are quite a few who are impressive -- Thiem has the consistency, Khachanov is emerging as a real power game player ( watch him!), Shapovalov (sp?) is gifted but still inconsistent,Tsitsipas is also emerging with his impressive run in the Rogers Cup... Zverev usually the top-ranked among them is also very gifted (especially with his height and game) but tends to get overwhelmed when playing in the Slams! Btw, Hugh is busy promoting THE FRONT RUNNER ( and hopefully, his Oscar chances) -- he is likely in Toronto this weekend ( for the premiere in Canada, the press conference and he is also co-hosting a party for the Front Runner on Saturday, 9:00 pm) -- although he may have a chance to catch the finals if he teleports back to NYC ( Just kidding -- Toronto is an easy commute to NYC ) However, there have been some casting alerts lately for BAD EDUCATION...and there is word that filming may be starting ( definitely a shoot schedule on September 10, although likely for the Janney photo double)...so he may be involved in the pre-prod or start of filming. It was hard to watch what could be Andy Murray's ( one of Tennis Big Four) last match in Australia...although he is hoping that he will retire after his last match in Wimbledon ( he was twice a Wimbledon champion, which must have been instrumental in his being knighted by the Queen). It was harder to watch the final ceremonies where Australian tennis fans gave him their full gesture of appreciation.
Well done, Andy Murray, in your career! It is sad that a lingering major injury has precipitated your retirement from the game but you have been one of the game's biggest stars!
Best Wishes!

I remember seeing that match when the world took notice of the young Swiss player. He upset the then formidable Wimbledon champion, Pete Sampras. And now he has the highest number of titles from the Wimbledon tournament! Also, of the 100 total tennis titles, 20 are GRAND SLAM trophies, with the Wimbledon wins dominating his trophy count of the GS.
