I have always been a great fan of THE NUTCRACKER ( with Tchaikovsky music and the Balanchine ballet). I have seen the Christmas ballet at the New York State Theatre ( Lincoln Center) three times! I do have the Macaulay Culkin version ( when he was still a young boy) and version by the Russian Bolshoi ballet. I have also watched a local production twice! I do love the music most of all!
One of my unusual Christmas décors are versions of the Nutcracker from the ballet.
It seems that Disney is doing a film adaptation, with maybe a more dramatic approach --
In its place, the studio will release THE NUTCRACKER AND THE FOUR REALMS, an all-new take on the classic story by E.T.A. Hoffmann.
Directed by Lasse Hallström, the film stars Mackenzie Foy as Clara, Keira Knightley as the Sugar Plum Fairy, Helen Mirren as Mother Ginger and Morgan Freeman as godfather Drosselmeyer, and it will also feature a special performance by Misty Copeland.
Nutcracker largely takes place in a strange and mysterious parallel world that’s home to the Land of Snowflakes, the Land of Flowers and the Land of Sweets. But it’s the ominous Fourth Realm where Clara must take on a tyrant named Mother Ginger as well as a gang of mice who’ve stolen a coveted key from Clara.
“The Mouse King is made up of thousands of mice — a cutting-edge CG creation. But we wanted him to move in a way that would be wonderfully surprising and incredibly cool, so we called on Lil Buck to provide the style of dance that defines the character. He is so talented and the way he makes this character move is unbelievable,” said Disney’s Sean Bailey.
Los Angeles-based dancer Lil Buck hit the stage at D23 to demonstrate the kind of street dancing — called jookin — that informed the way his character moves in the film.
