It's a one time live performance, so don't you think Hugh could fit it into his schedule? I think he would make a great Captain Von Trapp. My choice for Maria would be Kelly O'Hara, but I bet they pick Laura Osnes.

Who could possibly be better? Tall, strapping, handsome, the right age and he can sing! A one time special event. He MUST do it!

I am all for Hugh to be cast in the part - after all, he is the right leading man for all Rodgers and Hammerstein musicals ( even KING AND I ) - and I did suggest his name, as some others did, on the BWW thread opened for this topic. My only reservation is the timing -- *Not only may it run against his filming schedule for The Wolverine... *But I am not sure that he may want to do it, because it may upstage his forthcoming appearance in Les Miserables. I have a feeling that he would want to be acknowledged for his once-in-a-lifetime work in this well-loved musical first! Maybe it it is scheduled for late winter, before he films PRISONERS? Jo

If I recall right -- doesn't Captain Von Trapp have only one song to sing, which he sings to his children and during the concert - "Edelweiss"??
I think he may have a few lines when Maria sings "Something Good", but that doesn't count much. So, it is going to be more of a dramatic part as the stern father and aristocratic member of Austrian aristocracy who resists the Nazi invasion and who eventually falls for the charm of Maria! It is really a role for a musical theatre actress!
Hmmm... he can look and act the part...but would he really be interested in this?

In the original production, the Captain sings two songs with Max and Elsa. They are, "No Way to Stop It" and "How Can Love Survive?" "Something Good" and "I Have Confidence" were written for the movie version by Richard Rodgers. They were not in the original stage score. Oscar Hammerstein died about the time the original show opened on Broadway in 1959. Perhaps the TV version will include bits of these original songs. Even if it doesn't, Hugh would make a great Captain dramatically, and would sing Edelweiss beautifully.

The Sound of Music is probably the movie I have seen the most over the years ( except maybe repeat viewings of Oklahoma!) -- and I used to know the songs so well. I had even taken a special Sound of Music Tour in Salzburg just to see the memorable scenes from the movie ( the castle across the lake - we were not allowed close to it, the gazebo and carousel on which Liezl danced, the fountain where they sang around, the Mirabella Gardens, the allee of trees where the children hang down to the dismay of the Captain, a peep into the cemetery high up, a peep at the enormous structure where they held the concert -- LOL -- who could resist that tour??). But the most whimsical thing I ever did was to take an alpine tour (on a wagon-type of vehicle) going up the mountain, so we could see some faraway glaciers and see the alpine flowers that grew only at the tree-line ( where vegetation stops growing) -- because I wanted to see how an edelweiss looks like They are tiny, white flowers that dot the grounds! Whoever are cast, I hope they preserve this on DVD/BluRay so those of us overseas who do not have access to the telecast will eventually be able to see it. The hills are alive... ♫ ♫ ♫ Jo

Someone on ATC listed the differences between the stage production and the movie -- www.talkinbroadway.com/allthatchat/d.php?id=2081931The producers did say they are not remaking the movie ( "as that would be blasphemy ") but I don't think they categorically said that it would mean going back to the original stage production...or maybe they did imply it? As we all know he is the perfect R&H leading man! He's got so much on his plate in the next year++ but if the timing is right it would be great. The article made me think they were going to do it as it was in the original stage version which would give him more numbers to sing than in the movie version so that would be great too.

Perhaps it will be a hybrid of the original stage version and the film? In the original, "My Favorite Things" is sung by Maria and the Mother Abbess. "Lonely Goatherd" is sung during the thunderstorm. There was no puppet show.
