Per Deadline.com -- some highlights of the international box office to-date :

THE GREATEST SHOWMAN

20th Century Fox
The Hugh Jackman crowd-pleaser put another $16.2M under the big top this weekend on 19,173 screens in 42 markets. With a special IMAX run added in the UK, Fox’s showbiz origins movie jumped by 9% and impressively took the No. 1 spot in its 6th weekend. Australia also hopped to No. 1 in the 6th session with a drop of just 26%. The UK cume is $31.3M and in Oz it’s $20.3M.

Showman also took a bow in China with $7.4M including previews and a 7.7 rating on Douban. At historical rates, that’s 13% off of La La Land’s start last year. China has shown a fondness for musicals including La La and Coco recently. In 2012, Jackman-starrer Les Misérables was the No. 5 movie of the year. While Showman was the top Hollywood title of the weekend, the Middle Kingdom has a lot going on with new releases and what is likely to be a slow period ahead of Spring Festival which kicks off on February 16. That’s the same day the show travels to Japan.

Hope the pace of the overseas receipts improves, as it is lagging way behind Mamma Mia! ($466 M), LaLaLand ($295 M), and Les Miserables ($293 M).

Rotten Tomatoes predicts that it can surpass LA LA LAND at the domestic box office --

The P.T. Barnum musical sensation The Greatest Showman continued to put on a great show and please the crowds taking fourth place with an estimated $7.8M, off a low 18%. The Fox film spent its seventh consecutive weekend in the top five which is something that last year’s top grossing blockbusters like Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Beauty and the Beast, and Wonder Woman could not do. The Hugh Jackman hit has taken in $137.5M and is on track to end above the $160M mark. Showman is now at $290.5M worldwide and climbing.

IndieWire is even more optimistic --

“The Greatest Showman”
Fox also has, once again, the best-holding film. “The Greatest Showman” is still in fourth place, off 18 percent. It looks headed for an eventual domestic total of $170 million-$175 million, with a somewhat bigger haul oversees. Not bad for what was initially projected as a vanity project for Hugh Jackman, financed to reward him for his loyal service to the “X-Men” series.

Following five weeks of impressively consistent returns, this weekend The Greatest Showman rose to top spot at the UK box office, recording a hugely impressive uptick of 6% with £2.18m.

The film has now crossed £20m and, after strong numbers all week, is up to £23.2m. It was still playing in 500 locations on Sunday and hasn’t shown any signs of slowing down yet.

Cumulative box office translates to approx. $ 32,7 Million ( at a conversion rate of $1.41 to GBS 1.00)

Perhaps Rotten Tomatoes was so quick to respond to the Black Panther controversy because of the divisive response to another high-profile Disney property. The Last Jedi was officially certified fresh after scoring 91% among critics, a stark contrast to the 48% average score it received from 180,000 audience reactions. For some of these commentators, posting a negative rating was a chance to complain about their favourite franchise becoming too progressive, too feminised or too interested in presenting diversity. (Others just didn’t like the jokes.) The #DownWithDisney agitators suggested they had successfully manipulated The Last Jedi’s audience score using bots, a claim denied by Rotten Tomatoes.


There are examples of similar Rotten Tomatoes score discrepancies with no conspiracy theories swirling around them. The recent PT Barnum musical The Greatest Showman, a big-top passion project from Hugh Jackman, was considered rotten by critics, with a 55% rating on the Tomatometer, while its audience score is a much healthier 91% (from around 18,000 reviews), which would seem to chime with its remarkable ongoing box-office run. There are no claims that a rabid group of diehard Wolverine fans has been artificially inflating The Greatest Showman’s audience score to help their hero.

Haha! What a ludicrous statement! (No claims that) diehard Wolverine fans has been artificially inflating the TGS audience score to help Hugh Jackman??!!

If that author reviewed what he said and had been clear-eyed, he would have thought that it would be the opposite effect. It is more likely that rabid Wolverine fans do not want Hugh Jackman to touch anything to do with movie musicals! I remember the early reactions to the SHOWMAN trailer ( "He gave up Wolverine for this ??!!")... although it is hoped that some of them found themselves enjoying the musical when they almost reluctantly checked out how Hugh was doing

Also, if you read the Audience Reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, there were so many impassioned reviews on how great the musical was...and they were not coming from the traditional Wolverine fans. Also, the IMDB rating which has been maintained at 8.0 ( now at around 62.000 readers) shows a diversity in the voting bloc, but all giving the musical generally excellent ratings.

Check out the Amazon reader reviews ( close to 200 written reviews - you cannot rate it without a written review) -- I have never seen such a high rating ( maybe I am not looking) -- but as it stands now -- 96% of the written reviews gave the movie a 5-star rating and another 2% a 4-star rating!

And 20th Century Fox’s underdog musical The Greatest Showman looks like $1.6M today for a three-day of $6.2M, -19%,for a running total in Weekend 8 of $146.3M. The pic will soon overtake Les Miserables ($148.8M), and is less than $5M from overtaking Benj Pasek and Justin Paul’s previous Oscar-winning song-scripted musical La La Land ($151.1M).

It looks like the overseas market will not give it very strong support as current figures now indicate ( except from some strong results from countries like the UK, Australia, Mexico, South Korea, and maybe a few others), partly also because this movie was not a day-date release.

There was a recent article from China which indicated that the reception has not been as strong as hoped for or expected given that Hugh is popular there ( esp with Wolverine), partly because the timing of the release coincided with the coming New Year festivities ( when people go on long journeys to go their hometowns - something similar to what happens on Thanksgiving Day in the USA).

Slow Box Office Before Chinese New Year
Neither Huge Jackman’s The Greatest Showman, nor high-budget Chinese film Till the End of the World can save the pre-Chinese New Year box office in China. Single-day box office earnings have dropped from 250 million yuan ($29.7 million) back in early January to 100 million yuan ($15.9 million) last Friday. The weeks leading up to Chinese New Year have become the slowest movie season, as highly anticipated Chinese New Year movies take much of the spotlight with trailers, posters, and presales. This is also a time when hundreds of millions of people who might otherwise contribute significantly to the box office begin their trips back home to reunite with family for the Chinese New Year celebrations. The last major release will be in Japan ( which loves its movie musicals), so fingers crossed.

Has the lack of Oscar buzz ( which was strong for La La Land and Les Miserables after nominations and wins were announced) resulted in less than hoped-for overseas reception? Did the negative critic opinions on the movie eventually dent the reception outside the USA? Ironically, social media reception from those who did come to see the movie despite negative critic reactions in America, have been almost as ecstatic as those in the USA>

Overseas receipts are currently standing at $168 million (vs final figures of $ 293 for Les Miserables and $ 295 for La La Land) -- will the rest of the run make up to bring its final overseas results to at least $ 230 million ( an increase of $ 62 million)?

Why is $ 230 million my magic number? Well, if the domestic figures rise to $ 160 million ( where it is now at $ 146 million), that will give us a total of $ 390 million (although a $ 400 million-or-higher overall results will be nice -- maybe that could still be achievable). Together with LOGAN ( $ 617 million) and a total of $ 390 million for THE GREATEST SHOWMAN, will bring Hugh Jackman's box office receipts for these two outstanding back-to-back passion project movies in his film career to safely cross a billion dollars ( $ 1 billion)!

Bona Film Group’s “The Greatest Showman” added $2.52 million in its second weekend. Its cumulative is $13.4 million after 11 days. “Happy Death Day” scored $2.18 million in sixth place for a cumulative of $7.43 million after 10 days.

A great hold in the UK, saw The Greatest Showman drop just 13% from last frame during which it had captured the No. 1 spot after six weeks in release. With the soundtrack topping charts, and the film’s momentum continuing, the team is still getting out to promote the movie. Keala Settle appeared on Graham Norton’s couch in London on Friday night with a special video message sent in by Jackman. On his home turf Down Under, the $21.6M cume to date is now bigger than the lifetime of Les Misérables and is topping Mamma Mia! at the same stage in the run. The overall weekend was $8.7M on 10,504 screens in 40 markets. Japan is the last to step under the big top on Friday.

In the UK, The Greatest Showman continues to dazzle the box office, running second this weekend after Fifty Shades --

Dropping just 13% from the previous session, the smallest decline of any film in the UK Top 10, word-of-mouth sensation The Greatest Showman continues its impressive streak, with a tidy £1.93m gross for its seventh weekend of play. That’s the biggest box-office number for a film in its seventh session since Arthur Christmas posted £2.05m on the Christmas weekend in 2011. Leaving aside that festive quirk, you’d have to go all the way back to Avatar in January 2010 to see a film performing as strongly this deep into its run. Hugh Jackman’s PT Barnum musical will receive another boost on 23 February when Fox releases the singalong version. The gross so far is £26.1m, and the film now looks certain to overtake La La Land (£30.4m), thus becoming the biggest-grossing movie musical that uses newly composed songs.

THE GREATEST SHOWMAN now ranks 5th on the all-time "MOVIE MUSICALS-Live Action" list for DOMESTIC box office gross receipts, per BoxOfficeMojo It is likely to overtake La La Land by the weekend and land on 4th place. The list does not include CINDERELLA ( with Domestic receipts of $ 200 M), which is classified as "FANTASY". Neither is SOUND OF MUSIC ( with domestic gross of $ 159 Million) or other earlier musicals although their numbers are below $ 50 million for domestic receipts.


Can SHOWMAN overtake the domestic receipts of CHICAGO ( $ 170.7 Million) - that seems extremely difficult - maybe if we wish hard enough or see it 10 more times

There is fairly strong possibility it can overtake SOUND OF MUSIC ( its forerunner in terms of family-friendly appeal).

On second thought, if cumulative domestic receipts reach, say, $ 153-154 Million by this weekend, the movie will have to chase only $ 17 million more to beat CHICAGO

Not due out soon ... and no casting or filming announcements made ( only release date)-- maybe WICKED?


Except maybe for Mary Poppins Returns ( where there may be a new musical score?) although that also has a precedent successful movie musical, the others are either live-action adaptation or jukebox musical songbook or film adaptation of a stage musical. Nothing like all the originality that went into THE GREATEST SHOWMAN!

A huge shoutout for this weekend: Never bet against Hugh Jackman and Zac Efron singing together. 20th Century Fox’s original musical The Greatest Showman which was slow out of the gate will out-sing Lionsgate’s Oscar-winning La La Land ($151.1M) at the domestic box office on Saturday. Benj Pasek and Justin Paul won last year’s original song Oscar for “City of Stars” from the Damien Chazelle feature musical, and the songwriting duo are up again this year for “This Is Me” from The Greatest Showman. The original musical about P.T. Barnum will earn $5M-$6M over four days.

Presently, the domestic box office of THE GREATEST SHOWMAN stands at $ 149.4 Million.

The gravity-defier: The Greatest Showman

Another week, another powerful performance at UK cinemas for The Greatest Showman. The Hugh Jackman musical was dead level against the previous session, delivering eighth-weekend takings of £1.93m, for a total after 55 days of £30.4m. That number is already ahead of La La Land, hitherto the biggest musical based on newly composed songs. With the singalong version arriving in cinemas on Friday, the industry is now wondering if The Greatest Showman might end up with numbers approaching Les Misérables, currently the second-biggest musical of all time in the UK, with £40.8m. Top is Mamma Mia!, with £68.6m.
