Shortly after working at MTW in 2016, Hughes went in for an audition for "The Greatest Showman" in August 2016. The movie follows the story of P.T. Barnum and the founding of the Barnum & Bailey Circus.

A friend "started talking me up" to the film's casting director, who was looking for "a group of oddities who could do the singing and the dancing and also be a part of the scenes," Hughes said.

The dancing was "very contemporary, almost hip-hoppy dancing — very stylized, and that style suits itself very well to what I can do as a dancer," he said.

He was eventually cast as the Strong Man, one of the live members of Barnum's circus.


On the set of the film, he met the star of the movie, Hugh Jackman.

One of Hughes' costumes in the movie looks similar to Jackman's Wolverine, which drew the actor's interest, he said.

"He came up to me and said, 'You look like a mini-Wolverine,'" Hughes said. "He said, 'We've got to get a Wolverine picture.'

"It was so thrilling to be a part of (the movie), because you get to work with some incredible people like Hugh Jackman, Zac Efron, Zendaya. It was surreal."

The music was written by the same dream team behind 'La La Land'

You might not know them by name but you'll have definitely heard some of their music before.
The composing duo (known together as Pasek and Paul) were responsible for many of La La Land's biggest tracks, as well as the Tony Award-winning Broadway smash Dear Evan Hansen — aka the musical every celebrity from Beyoncé to Reese Witherspoon won't stop raving about.


'This Is Me' peaked at number 10 on the ARIA Chart

Perhaps the most loved song from the film, 'This Is Me' became an instant hit, peaking at number ten on the ARIA Charts in Australia. Sung by Keala Settle who played Lettie Lutz in the movie (the bearded lady with the powerhouse vocals), the song also won the 2018 Golden Globe Award for Best Original Song.

With the soundtrack finding such a huge fan base, Hugh Jackman has said his only regret was not releasing the soundtrack earlier: "If we all had our time over again, we would have released the album probably around three months before [the movie opened]."


Hugh Jackman had to buy Keala Settle whiskey before her audition

The demo for 'This Is Me' was originally recorded by Broadway star Shoshana Bean. When Keala Settle was asked to workshop the song with The Greatest Showman's songwriters, she initially refused, thinking Bean was a better choice of singer.
"I knew Shoshana had done the demo and I said, "You call her, tell her to come and sing it, and I'll sing back up for her." Because I'm a huge fan, I love her voice," Settle told Variety.

"Finally when it was time to do it, T-minus one day, Hugh [Jackman] and Michael [Gracey, film director] came up to me and said, "What is it going to take for you to sing this song?" I said, "If you buy me a bottle of Jameson, I'll do it." They kept it in a bag and said, "This is yours if you sing the song." I'm very cheap that way."


'This Is Me' was inspired by Pasek's own life

Writer Benj Pasek's real-life struggle growing up as a closeted teen inspired 'This Is Me':
"I'm a gay man who grew up in the closet when I was a teenager," he explained to Billboard. "You experience the world telling you that you're not lovable, you're unwanted, or something about you is broken, and you feel like you have to fix yourself or hide yourself."

"I think it's amazing to work on a song that you think is your own private struggle and you realize that once you shine a little bit of light on it, there are a lot of other people sort of huddling in the dark there too," Pasek added.



Settle's audition workshop convinced production companies to make the film

After she finally agreed to the workshop, Settle's rendition of 'This Is Me' brought the cast and crew to tears (Jackman included) and Pasek credits the moment as the film's turning point.

"I really do believe having Keala sing is one of the reasons the film was greenlit," Pasek says. "The way she delivered it in that room was so undeniable."

Hugh Jackman had a skin cancer removed the day before the film's read-through

The day before the film's big production workshop — where the movie studio would finally decide whether or not to give the film the greenlight — Hugh Jackman had undergone surgery to remove a skin cancer from his nose.

With 80 stitches in his nose, the actor was not supposed to sing. However, Jackman surprised everyone there when he suddenly began belting out the song 'From Now On'. All in the name of showbiz!


Zendaya performed her own trapeze stunts in 'Rewrite the Stars'

In her duet with Zac Efron, 'Rewrite the Stars', the 21-year-old had to perform a acrobatic sequence involving ropes, pulleys and a trapeze. Training in the lead-up to the shooting of the scene, Zendaya aimed to use as little of her stunt double as possible.

"We're supposed to grab onto each other with the other arm and get in this swing, which is in all the posters and it's beautiful — and that's great," explained Zendaya. "But if you don't catch each other, [you'll collide]." Photo: 20th Century Fox

When she arrived on set on the day, the actress suddenly became nervous. "The rig was like 15 to 20 feet taller, and there was no net," she says. "No net, because back in the day, they didn't have those yet so I was hooked up so I was safe, but visually that's a little — that's a lot to get over, you know?"

Luckily it was Hugh Jackman to the rescue. "Right when I was about to go up, in the cherry picker to go up to the thing, and Hugh Jackman walked by and he goes, "Zendaya, you're a badass.' And I was like, 'Take me up.'"

Yep, that would be all the inspiration we would need!

Co-choreographer Shannon H shares this insight on the dance abilities of the major cast --

In your opinion, who was the best dancer out of Hugh Jackman, Zac Efron, Zendaya and Michelle Williams?

Throw me under the bus, why don't you! I think we'd need a dance battle for that answer! They are all great dancers, but Hugh Jackman definitely comes from a Broadway musical background and then Zac is from a musical film background — which is a lot more commercial than stage theatre. So they both had their own flare and style. Let's just say Zac has a younger approach and Hugh is much more seasoned. But, oh, Zendaya! She's amazing, she's a superstar! I loved working with her. She's definitely going places.


I did get to train with Michelle a little bit, and her training was a lot more strenuous. Her and Hugh were rehearsing every other day for a good three months at least. And that's a shock to the system when you're not keeping up with your fitness! I mean, they are fit, but this in itself is so different. She'd get tired and sore, but honestly that happened to all of us.

That was a rumor...but did it really happen? Was that supposed to be part of the last iterations in the continuing changes in the script?

This was posted on Twitter - part of the script which never saw the light of day. Revised? Deleted?

It didn't fit into the finalized version -- over the last few years of the project, there were a number of screenwriters involved ( only 2 were recognized in the official lineup, per AMPAS rules) including Oscar winner Michael Arndt who wrote some of the final version.

We don't know to what extent James Mangold got involved in the final version ( the detail I remember was the inclusion of Barnum talking to his daughters as they were about to sleep and the girls suggested that the the museum co do with some changes). Maybe more than just changes here and there - because he was given an Exec Producer credit and supposedly given a 7-figure paycheck.

That would have made Barnum's leaving of his family seem more caring of them, than what the final version seemed to indicate ( that he was only chasing after the money that the concert tour can bring to his business).

Hopefully, someone would write a book of the film project - Hugh would have been ideal because he can write about events ( journalism major) and he was the project shepherd since the start!

Maybe with some footnotes from Michael Gracey, Pasek and Paul, and the screenwriters?

It’s Not Easy Being Greenspeople

For a flashback sequence in “The Greatest Showman,” Walsh had to transform a historically preserved mansion into an overgrown mess.

Careful to protect the interiors, Walsh propped trees on pedestals and strung vines with zip ties and wire.

The exteriors were shot at a different location, which Walsh draped with fake English ivy.

Then she had only 10 days to turn back time and make the estate look like it had in its grand heyday.

In a rare occurrence for a greensperson, they were actually shooting a fall scene in the fall, so Walsh used real fallen leaves to create the borders of the roadway and added impatiens as accents on the staircase.

Those are some of my favorite scenes in the movie...to the part where A Million Dreams finally segues into the grown-up Phineas and Charity.

The setting did not just come from the imagination of the Production Design team. When Michael Gracey was preparing the film project, including linking the thematic elements to the songs, Pasek&Paul shared that Michael had not only given them the overview and what he wanted out of the song, he also showed him a set of art work, including one for young Phineas and Charity in a garden setting ...which would inspire A Million Dreams. It seems that instead of typical storyboards ( prepared in pre-production), Michael had someone do art renderings of some key moments in the storyline.
