The show is a personal retrospective. I think the first half focused on his successful theatre/film musicals career ( Greatest Showman/BeautyAndTheBeast/LesMiserables/BackOnBroadway) and also a tribute to Broadway/NewYork where his career apart from film also flourished . The Evan Hansen song was more of a personal issue he had to deal with - but it also told us that he is as much a fan of Broadway as much as he is an actual Broadway performer. The second half is more of Hugh sharing what major factors eventually influenced his career and his personal advocacy. Thus the impact of movie musicals in his youth, how he became a dance fan ( the tap dance portion), the Australian heritage...and even TheBoyFromOz (it was offered to him first in Oz - but he turned it down and regretted his decision when he saw it there and that heavily influenced his accepting the Broadway role immediately when the chance came up). Of course the placing of TBFO right at the start of the second half is also a ploy to give the show the same impact as the opener of the first act ( Greatest Show/Come Alive). The epilog/11 oclock number would be From Now On...and the Aussie sentimental favorite I Still Call Australia Home. I still prefer Once Before I Go, though I am sad though that Oklahoma! was not included because that paved the way ultimately to the road to international stardom and to Hollywood and his film career ( of which LesMiserables and Greatest Showman are 2 major parts). Those - familiar or not familiar with his body of work - who dismiss his show as "mishmash" obviously don't know the meaning of "versatility". His entire show has a sort of red thread from beginning until end and is a showcase of his versatile skills. It should be not too difficult to understand the concept, even for someone who doesn't know much about him.
Of course everybody has a few favorites in the show, some like this and that more than other segments, but to diss the second part as "lackluster" with "random songs" and meaningless stories is just ridiculous. Lack of knowledge is no excuse. Why can't people inform themselves at least a little bit about an artist instead of blurting out the very first thoughts on social media that flash through their mind? I suppose the Twitter chick is Australian - so the Aboriginal part was also a lackluster for her?? Or the beautiful "A Million Dreams" performance?

Couldn't agree more. Well stated! Those - familiar or not familiar with his body of work - who dismiss his show as "mishmash" obviously don't know the meaning of "versatility". I’m guessing she wasn’t overly familiar with HJ personally or professionally, which begs the question: why on earth did she buy a ticket? Ellen. This is what she tweeted back: Yes completely familiar with his work. Just didn’t enjoy the second half at all. ? She’s crazy! P.S. She’s from Brisbane, Australia.

Obviously she never saw him on Broadway and cares little about his versatility or character as an incredible human being.

Or that she may not be necessarily a fan of musical theatre ( where songs and narrative advance the storyline) - maybe more of pop concerts where formats are different? In essence, TheManTheMusicTheShow is a theatre show! She enjoyed the first half which featured Hugh's success stories in musicals and a tribute to Broadway where he has also found great success. She may not have been keen to know what influenced his career choices?

I somehow don't quite believe that she is "completely familiar with his work". But she isn't worth the trouble to continue to bother with her. If she couldn't enjoy the second half "AT ALL" and could not appreciate as Australian at least the Aboriginal segment, it's her loss. Next time she should rather stay at home and watch her Netflix stuff.

Hope she rests well for a few days before the trip to shore up for the travel ( Google says it will take less than 2 hours from Cincinnati to Columbus)...and hope the show makes up for the discomfort.

Yes, the music tour is an excellent calling card for THE MUSIC MAN, especially for those who are theatregoers and/or who live in the Tri-state!
