Understudies may have the talent to perform the basic physical requirements of the role ( dance/sing....but not usually the same acting skills) but where they lack is usually the personal appeal that a leading man possesses that led them to A-list status.

If someone sees an understudy perform and the person is not a regular theatregoer he may be impressed with the work of the understudy in general.

Max was technically a strong dancer and could sing but Hugh Jackman live is a very hard act to follow as he's not only got charisma in spades but he is a very fine actor!

Last year, went to see Hugh Jackman in the Music Man on Broadway. Jackman did a great job but Robert Preston truly will always be the Music Man!

The character could have had a different interpretation, depending on chosen actor for the role. Preston was not 1st choice - it was DannyKaye & others incl CaryGrant. Read some literature notes on the character of Hill as pure charisma & used his looks to sway his public (cont.)

HughJackman is blessed w/ looks&indelible charisma& his take on Hill reflects the influence from his personal gifts - he beguiled ! With a winning smile!
Preston portrayed Hill more like a brash-talking tent revival force while HJ used charm to sway the audience - both excelled!

In 2022 dance was used strongly to sway the kids to form a band. HJ used his dance ability&way of miming musical instruments to make them believe. His charm was contagious - they really liked him! RP had a different technique but I was more like the kids who were mesmerized 🤩😂

Btw, I saw Robert Preston with Mary Martin a long time ago in "I Do, I Do" based on "The FourPoster". But his Harold Hill was too strong an impression that I kept comparing his character in "I Do, I Do" to the Pied Piper of RiverCity, aka The Music Man 😊
