Many stories of catastrophies around he world.
One of the most devastating are the ongoing widespread fires that are now hitting east coast Australia. This has largely been brought on by the drought that has made it easy for dry forests to incinerate. The fires have moved to many areas.
One of those affected --
Hope our Aussie friends in their native land are safe.

Scary, indeed. Wildfires are becoming a common event. Hope everyone stays safe.

Prayers to our friends everywhere fighting fires. High winds are often fueling these disasters. California sends best wishes to families and firefighters who are struggling with the tragedy of these fires.

Jo, I just read that a dangerous typhoon has hit parts of the Philippines. I hope everyone stays safe and there is no major devastation.

Yes, we have had a series of natural catastrophes in very recent times. A series of earthquakes ( with some deaths and property devastation) has hit us in the south ( closer to the equator -- on the other hand, where north Australia shares the Coral Triangle with us, Indonesia and other island-nations) - it is not just aftershocks, but different earthquakes. The typhoon hit our shores on Christmas Day - it has been a very rainy day where we are -- but the brunt of the major typhoon is hitting a group of islands ( we do have more than 7500 islands or so) further to the south.
Thanks for the kind thoughts!

Hugh has shared his messages in his Instagram Stories to his homeland, now ravaged by fire.
It's already New Year in Australia, usually one of the first ones (together with New Zealand and some islands in the Pacific) to mark the incoming year -- and we are shown the fireworks over Sydney Bridge. But this year, they are sad pictures of devastation that are featured on worldwide media.
Hope they can soon get over this widespread tragedy from mother nature!

It has to be an official and organized effort ( I remember that right after the Sept 11 attacks in NYC, the American Red Cross immediately mobilized to receive donations)...not just by anyone who wants to set up a donation fund.
Knowing Hugh's generous and caring nature - he is likely already doing something privately to help alleviate the devastating loss to lives, livestock, and property. We know how much he loves his home country!
Hope his family and those close to him have not suffered from this tragic event!

I found the link to official options to donate, if anyone wishes to do that --
The link to the Australian Red Cross works out fine.

I was watching the a new pre-Australian Tennis Open tournament among nations with dffferent teams of tennis players called the ATP Cup ( like Davis Cup). These are being held in Sydney, Perth, Brisbane for the initial rounds but will converge in Sydney for the last 8 match-ups. Melbourne will host the Grand Slam Australian Tennis Open. *It was nice to hear that the ATP Cup was going to donate a fixed amount for every ace any player has served for the Funds to help the Fire Victims ( via Australian Red Cross). Some players also volunteered to donate a fixed amount for every ace they are credited with! *But I almost fell out of my seat when this clip came on ( IGNORE the first one) -- check out the 2nd one It turned out that FOX Sports, in honor of the first Grand Slam Tournament, the Australian Open, will screen movies featuring Australian actors. And the first one up is... REAL STEEL Btw, not to dismiss the many tweets that paint a very sad picture of what's happening in Australia... but the mood of the sports commentators and the audience behavior seemed a little more optimistic. Hope their positivity will end in a faster resolution to and the recovery from the current problem. Jo
